Testing, Testing, 1..2..3...Is this thing on? A Cervelo Test Team Preview

Thor Hushovd Cervélo TestTeam

This is Thor Hushovd. He can go fast. He also has been known to ride a chicken from time to time. Some ladies here at PdC might be drawn to his backside or his Norwegian looks. In any case, he is one of the anchors of the Cervelo Test Team, who came off one of the best debut seasons in recent memory. Along with Heinrich Haussler and Carlos Sastre, the three drove the team to spectacular heights. But now it is a new season and a new team. 3 important riders are now gone in the forms of Simon Gerrans, Hayden Roulston and Serge Pauwels but younger riders have matured and they have spent their off-season wisely.

Since I don't have anything to do right now, I will go through their accquasitions from the off-season, riders who will come into their own, where they will rise and faulter and maybe a VDS tip or three.

Photo from PdC pool more specifically --->(PdC_Clydesdale)

Star-divide

First let us look at the new acquisitions to the team. In terms of actual results, the following names are rich with them and while they might not be able to fill the void left with big wins, they should be able to hold their own.

New riders. Davide Appollonio is a neo-pro after coming as a staigaire last year with very good results in the Tours of Britain and Ireland. He is a rider that is young (20) and rich with talent after impressive results on the Italian U23 circuit riding along with the likes of Peter Sagan, should develop into a solid classics and short stage race rider. Theo Bos is known to many for his track sprinting and bike tossing efforts but seems to be ready to make to the transition to full time roadie. He can add some serious horsepower to the Cervelo train just as long as his endurance is there to make it to the line though it seems he is keeping up well. If he does successfully make the switch he will be the first keirin world champion since the great Urs Freuler(15x Giro stage winner, 8x world point race champ and 2x keirin world champ) to successfully ride with the European pro peloton. Joao Correia has an inspiring story of being a former big man to a professional racer. After thinking about it, Cervelo wouldn't waste money on him if he couldn't actually race. Yes he will be good PR but he should be a solid domestique. Stefan Denifl might listen to a lot of techno music but he is yet another young rider (22) and can climb very quickly and has a solid TT ('08 Austrian champ). Should be riding a GT this year along with some other stage races and hillier one days. Xavi Tondo, even though he has a checkered past with his choice of teams (think LA-MSS) though he is a part of the bike pure movement, he is a welcomed addition to the team for his climbing and hilly one-day racing abilities. He will be alongside Sastre at the Giro and will be able to shine in the shorter Tours and hilly one-day races.

THE STARS

Carlos, Thor and Heinrich. Blah blah blah...we know what they will be doing. Carlos will do nothing til the Giro and then will decide on the Tour or Vuelta. Haussler and Hushovd will go to the classics and try to follow up on their amazing results last year and Thor will try to follow up with the Green Jersey in the Tour. Did this really need it's own section?

A RIDER(S) THAT WILL COME INTO HIS OWN

Dom Rollin is a guy that could bring in a big result this year because when you think of where he came from at Toyota United from riding mostly crits and circuit races and a couple 2nd/3rd tier stage races to getting 3rd at the Scheldeprijs in one year is quite a feat. Now he has a whole year under his belt and he could be poised to score a few wins this year. Another rider I could put in this category is.......The King of Style himself, Edward Carrington King aka Ted King. He had a tough early season last year with his crash at Tour of California and being out til mid-April. He came from mostly NRC racing to Pro Tour racing in one year with doing some solid team work throughout the year. It would be nice to see him get a result or two this year.

Mayors_cup_-_ted_king_-_cervelo_test_medium

WHERE THEY WILL SHINE

-The Classics* and the shorter tours. They have 4H (Not the farm kids but Haussler, Hammond, Hunt and Hushovd) and Klier plus a bunch of other strong, burly riders to bolster the squad for the spring. They can muscle their way up into the top 5 in almost any flat/rolling short tour so they will have plenty of opportunities for results, that is for sure. I would be suprised if they don't get at least 1 podium in one of the 3 early monuments this year.

-Sprints. They have 6 riders on the team that at some point in the season will probably score VDS points in a bunch sprint. Let us count them: Hushovd, Haussler, Reimer, Bos (if he gets it down), Dom Rollin (if he gets a little help, looked decent at Besseges) and Hammond (had the near Vuelta win and was solid at Franco-Belgie). Throw in Lancaster to take the train up to speed and then you have a solid sprint team.

-Giro. Carlos should be stellar on a course that is suited very well to him and should be fighting with Jen Grey and Cuddles for the win. Tondo is going to be his right hand man in the mountains and should be able to provide an abundance of support.

-Short Tours. Mostly flat but if Xavi Tondo starts a few of the hillier Spanish ones then he will be vying for the podium in all of them.

*This does not mean the Ardennes and Lombardia. Unless Messirs Tondo and Sastre pull something out of nowhere before the Giro, they will probably get a couple of top 15's and maybe a top 10. Then it will prob. just be Tondo and Deignan for Lombardia

Where They won't be Good...

-Ardennes. See above

-Le Tour. If Carlos is really going to win the Giro then it might be a good bet that he goes for a rest and then the Vuelta. This leaves it all on Thor's shoulders essentially and maybe a little on Haussler for a stage win. Thor is a very capable rider but if a healthy Boonen is there along with all of the over favorites then it is going to be harder than last year. Best case scenario is that he storms the prologue for a top 5 and then he would have to limit his losses and try another mountain break. As much as it pains me to say it, I think it might be Cav's year though I am hoping otherwise. (I am so not good at being non-partisan sometimes)

Who will score on VDS...dun dun duuuunnnnnnnnnnnn

As many as 20 riders have a chance at gaining some VDS points. So yeah that is all I will say about that...

Okay maybe just one more line. They had 25 wins last year and they only "lost" 3 of them in the form of Gerrans. Overall they had 16 different riders last year hit the podium for a total of 76 podium apperances and the only lost 8 of those. They have the guys that will score you some points but they just have to perform.

----------------------------------

So yeah, most of that all ready was known but yeah. This year's Cervelo team has big shoes to fit and it is hard to say if they are going to be able to fill them. They had such an amazing early season last year that it is hard to make a comparison but they will have to step up in certain areas so that they can challenge (i.e. the Ardennes). The will be missing Gerrans sorely when they hit late April though Tondo might be able to do something. In any case, the classics is where half of the team's heart is at so they are going to have that much more pressure on themselves to get another big win to match the Het Volk win (yeah I know it is het Nieuwsblahblahblah but it is still Het Volk to me...should just call it the Omloop.) They have all of the goods to stay up as one of the elite teams of cycling but it is whether or not they are heading for that sophmore slump.

Even if the do not live up to the greatness that they laid down in their first year, they will still be a force to be reckoned with from Spring till Fall, from The Omloop til Paris-Tours (they don't like the Italian classics so much).

Predictionz: Carlos will be 2nd in the Giro. Thor will be riding the Chicken this spring sometimes and Barbie will be...well Barbie-ing it up I guess. Thor will finish 3rd in the green jersey standings but will claim a stage. Barbie will get a nice win...I don't know where but it will be nice. # of wins-23. I was going to go lower but then I found a picture of Barbie in the PdC pool and I just couldn't go any lower...

Great job! Sastre is on my (probably losing) VDS team :)

PS. If you want to wake up the PdC women, and others, you could rename this ‘The Deities’ (courtesy of Lou), or simply ‘Thor and HH/ Barbie/ Heinrich’.

yay Sastre!

also on my loser team (for the moment at least)

I decided that I was never going to have the sort of knowledge Vlaanderen does,

so I’d just go with my heart. I registered the team because really nothing was going to make Stuey and Klodi, and well, that really says it all. It’s not about winning for me… it can’t be ;)

Carlos...

…seems like a bargain to me this year, plus he has sentimental value. Every time he was in any race last year I was pulling for him. So yeah, VDS here too.

I love Sastre too. Great rider. Great athlete. And all-around nice guy which is unique in the GC peloton.

I'm a Sastre fan, but 'unique' in his niceness?

O’Grady and Jens! spring instantly to mind for me, but I expect many others could also name others they think are good guys too ;)

Yeah I like Jens and O'Grady too.

I should have been more specific and said GC contenders.

Yeah I know he was cleared.

But still creates a bad taste in my mouth.

by majope on Feb 18, 2010 8:38 AM EST up reply actions

Actually I never liked him, I truthfully did not remember there was any substance to the rumours. What I didn’t like was him going from attacker and good climber to the world’s best climber in one or two years and then to the world’s best time-trialer in stage races without losing any climbing ability. Still, I just preached a few days ago how performance is never an indication for doping so I stuck to that.

by tedvdw on Feb 18, 2010 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

It's been two and a half years.

I’m still waiting for WADA to weigh in, They have the documents. I think Franke likes the limelight a little too much.

Don't hold your breath.

I don’t think action has ever been taken against a rider based on documentary evidence. Besides, it’s up to the rider’s home federation to open a case, and I don’t see that happening any time soon.

by majope on Feb 18, 2010 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

I think the UCI has been involved.

I don’t think they in their final analysis determined any involvement by Contador. And I doubt that Dick Pound would have had the ability to contain himself if he had the goods on Contador, he has a bigger mouth than Franke. Even the French allowed him to race the next year. (He must be guilty they just haven’t figured out how to break the news.) Here’s a walk down memory lane with Andrew Hood at VeloNews
If Contador ever is nabbed for doping, and on some days I have to wonder if any one is really very clean, so he very well may be, it probably will be as a result of something more actionable than and legitimate than Werner Franke’s claims and we will have to wait for that to happen.

Bicycling is the nearest approximation I know to the flight of birds. Louis J. Helle, Jr.

by flying dog on Feb 18, 2010 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure we're on the same page here.

I was talking Puerto documents—Contador definitely appears in them, although given the use of intials, code names, and general scribbling on a lot of the docs there’s got to be some interpretation involved. Franke got some of the documents leaked to him and gave his opinion on what was in them.

But nobody, not the UCI or WADA or the French, can just up and ban somebody based on documentary evidence that Franke presumably didn’t get through standard channels. Assuming, as I noted above, that anyone will ever get banned for documentary evidence alone. I doubt that will happen. I think Contador’s almost certainly safe from Puerto, but I also think it’s likely he was (possibly still is) dirty.

Shit happens--Edvald Boasson Hagen, on Tour of Oman Stage 4.

by majope on Feb 18, 2010 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting point

You’re right, I don’t think anyone has yet been banned on the basis of documents. There’s never been any talk that there is a Contador blood bag, though the Italians did take samples from a ridiculous number of those things. Also, they have a trove of documents with real names in them.

Still, I think you’re right. Contador is safe in re Puerto. I’d be very surprised to see a case opened against him, though I do agree with your final sentence there, that it’s likely he was – and is – doing the naughty.

Oops

Left out the “possibly” there, but you get the point.

by Jen See on Feb 18, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

When the French and the UCI got the "documents" from the Spanish Civil Guardia (sp?) 36 hours before the start of the Tour in '06

They definitely did some banning although not exactly through conventional means. Timing forced them to act differently than they might have otherwise but they were basically all guilty until proven innocent.

Konovalaves won the last TT in the Giro..

It was a lucky shot due rain I think but I don’t think he will reach that again. Some solid shots in Time trials he will gain this year.. But it was impressive. To win the time trial after 3 weeks race at the age of 24..
Deignan big question mark for me.. Know he can climb but more a guy for the breakaway..

Cobbles season is going to be agonisingly painful for me

…in a pleasurable way, but nonetheless…

I have just realised that I am going to be more conflicted this year than ever before. I am not yet on speaking terms with G-W, after the makeover. I am torn about the new look. The only race that I am vaguely at peace with is de Ronde. That belongs to Tony. The man wants it, and as far as I am concerned he can have anything he damn well pleases ;-). Still… part of me would be pleased to see Devo take a hat-trick…

P-R is where it gets nasty. It’s the highlight of the calendar for me, by a long way… and I desperately want it for \O/ this year. But then, Stuey wants to balance up his mantlepiece, and may not have another shot at securing the matching set. And I am reminded of how damned good Summie was looking last year, and I start to harbour a quiet hope. And then there’s Thor… oh Thor, can you wait a year?… no you can’t, can you. Damn.

Incidentally, it’s primarily his voice. For me, anyway. Mind you, I was ever so appreciative of the rear-view footage of the break on stage 17 of the Tour last year. Not Tony standard – but an inspiring view nonetheless ;-)

Every mantelpiece deserves to be balanced...

after that I’m happy for everyone to share… well providing Tony that tony has de Ronde…

yeah i was curious

because he seems like such a disagreeable character. I mean, \O/ afterall. Not that i’m condemning him and sometimes i def sympathize with guys who everyone is against, so …

Although i guess i remember him last year needlessly (in my view) crashing out in P-R and then blaming Flecha, so don’t think i’ll be pulling for him.

Basically, I’m a fan. No, really. (Will you lot stop laughing, please? I’m serious here!). I don’t see him as a particularly ‘disagreeable’ character… the man has some quirks, for sure, but somehow they make it harder for me not to like him.

Plus, he bloody well deserves it. And you don’t win P-R by gesticulating. I know he can do it…

I doubt it will be under many riders any time soon and it might not be the right bike for the classics since it is so stiff so at the earliest

I would expect it to be maybe seen at the Giro under Carlos but even then that is a maybe. The P4 didn’t make an apperance until Konovalovas rode it in the Giro TTT but Kristin Armstrong all ready won on it and it was available to the public all ready.

by Vlaanderen90 on Feb 17, 2010 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

True in regards to the P4. But there might have been other issues at play since quantities were still limited at that point.

Takes quite a few bikes to outfit a full team.

Yeah I agree, Giro would probably be the earliest but I’m sure it will be used this season. Definitely with Thor and the Tour hunt for green.

That should be a title, “Hunt For Green July.”

Which still probably doesn't cover the true cost of the frame?

Would be interesting to know if Cervelo is losing money on the frames or not? I think the main reason for them to sell them is the UCI rule regarding the use of particular frames and their need to be available to the public?

With this frame, it is going to be much different from almost any bike they put out on the market before...

Since it is such a high price. I pretty much know, having heard dialogue from Phil White himself to a mechanic friend of mine, that they definitely got their money back from the investment they put in on pretty much all of the bikes they currently have, save the S3 and P4 since they are still pretty new, and then some so they have money to play with.

Seems like they are willing to take the hit for now though on this bike.

You do realize that link was posted a day before about 25 lines up?

Just saying.
