Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

I was able to spend alittle time with Cadel Evans at the BMC Racing Team training camp. I found him open, approachable and quite funny.

My fav Evans quote - "One attack at the World Championship and you get to wear the rainbow jersey all year. 20 attacks at the Tour de France and you get to wear the yellow jersey for 24 hours,"

I'm warming to Cuddles

He gives the impression of warming to himself as well

I was totally expecting a cool and distant person but...

…was quite pleasantly surprised. He was very approachable, open, and very funny. I walked away a Cadel Evans fan.

Awesome!

I am slowly turning into a fan of this guys. I’ve always defended him against the stupidity of referring to him as a wheelsucker but I still didn’t care for him.

And the switch to BMC, I also see as a briljant move and no risk at all. In fact, I think it will motivate him and others on the team even more, and the invite to the TdF is in the mail.

Thanks Steph-

He was quite sensitive to the "wheelsucker" label!

As he stated in my story….he sees his conservative riding as tactical. I love that he did not back down from being conservative.

Luquigas definitely need to keep their eyes on Evans. He is out to get the pink jersey….and his team is extremely motivated to help him.

BMC signing was good for BMC but great for Evans.

Only thing I would be worried about is that he doesn't really have anybody to help him late in the mountain stages, at least from what I hae seen

I know he can take care of himself for the most part but it would be better if he had a man or 2 that could shepherd him and could help play the numbers game, especially with a team like Leaky who will have 3 men up in front.

great interview

Cadel had a tough time for a while …. he was either a wheel sucker or someone that made stupid attacks ….. (which seem a little contradictory).

I think he was a very good rider trying hard to win at the very biggest races – which isn’t easy. But his hard work means he gets to enjoy the World jersey all year.

Best interview of Cadel I've read. Thanks.

Agreed, great interview!

Evans is one of those riders that I love to watch. Dare I say it, he just seems more human, more mortal than some of those around him. While others are comfortably covering moves, he seems to be carefully measuring out his efforts, seems very aware of what he can and can’t do, and seems to be able to dip into the “pain locker” when needed.

Exactly....

He is very aware of his abilities. He talked about his mountain biking roots…which I did not put in the story…..how he is used to riding alone….but now enjoys riding with a team.

I love that quote…

It's why we keep supporting him... even on is bad days..

He wears his heart on his sleeve and he backs it with effort, if not poetry… although Mendrisio was beautiful :)

True

But mostly I’m just pleased that he really does look happy at BMC and like he’s having a good time. I’m hoping that’s what’ll make the difference (and George’ll probably help a bit too).

I suspect the George factor should never be underrated..

but yes, I’m happy Cuddles is happy at BMC.

Evans was joking around with his team mates.

It was nice to see.

Evans signed a 3 year contract with BMC. I asked why 3 years and he said that since BMC was willing to work with him…he owed them his committment. He saw it as a win-win.

The expectations game is rough

You look at Cadel’s record over the years and it’s pretty damn impressive, high finishes in all kinds of top-level races… but then people want to know why, as good as he is, he hasn’t done more. Phew. 99% of the riders in the peloton would kill to be as good as he is.

Pretty sure he’ll have some more big wins before he’s done.

interesting that it was

the television cars (who stopped to film him stuck by the side of the road) that blocked the traffic and kept him from getting his wheel changed in a reasonable time in the vuelta.
