Virtual Directeur Sportif: It's DEADLINE DAY!!
Update: Time is up!
Thanks to some shuffling around among servers, we have now set a deadline of Friday 9pm Pacific (a/k/a 6am Saturday in Belgium and midnight US Eastern) for you to submit your entries. You can even double-check your time remaining here! So clever, our tedvdw. If you haven't sent in your team, 'ead on over to the VDS website and get to work!

Prolonging the agony.
Now there’s a much later last minute to get my team in. I thought my suffering would be over nine hours before that. Damn you!
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
"Life is agony." - drunken man at bar at 2.45 in the morning paraphrasing Schopenhauer.
And +1. Thanks to all the masterminds behind VDS for intensifying my misery.
You took the words out of my mouth.
I was going to submit at lunchtime and get it over with but now there is far too much temptation to tinker. Bah.
What?
I so hurried up today to get mine in so I wouldn’t miss the deadline like I did a couple years ago. I guess I gain some sleep either way. :-)
I'm ready for this road season to wrap up. Bring on Cross!
Harrumph.
So, Hewhoshallnotbenamed had to go leak my top four to those that know who you are.
I clearly don’t have enough wine in me to make good decisions, yet. However, I’ll have the last laugh. I now have more time to drink and decide!
(And, Drew, you’re my hero for sticking up for me. If we had a VDS for podiumcafe folks you’d totally be on my team.)
Are you sure you'd want Drew on your team?
The man carries his bike more than he rides it. Just sayin’.
I'm ready for this road season to wrap up. Bring on Cross!
Who knows if he knows how, not sure anyone has seen it happen is all. ;-p

Question
Do the Australian TT and RR championships count for points even though they happened before the deadline?
The impact of theanswer on my one-point rider selections will be felt in distant galaxies.
Not just clever,
tedvdw is Mr. Johnny-on-the-spot. Nice having him around indeed.

I rushed to get mine in so that I'd meet the old deadline
I’d have delayed it if I knew, but rushing has given me a strange calm. Since it was a rush-job, I have lowered my expectations entirely, and am now tranquillo.
The feeble flame of hope has been snuffed out before its light tarnished my heart. In its place, acceptance.
That is the way to true wisdom, I feel.
Hope is evil.
"It's a lovely thing, feeling that momentum. If you're lucky, it's also about grace." Tim Winton
I should call you 'El Duderino'
since I’m not into the whole brevity thing. You seem to have it down pat, though.
Hope is not just evil - it rides again!
Jokes, jokes.
Reading your quote I was reminded of
‘Life is pain. Anyone say says different is selling something.’
One of my favourite quotes.
Wow, almost 400 teams already.
I hope tedvdw has been sent something awesome in the mail. Imagining having to update all of those by hand!
Got my team in - need a bloody big drink.
Hooroo, everyone!
So how many teams will remain unsubmitted
I’ll put 10 VDS points on 19.
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
That's not fair
You shouldn’t be allowed to play by default. If this would have been known in advance nobody would have submitted his/her team. Just make it ok and keep the possibility to tinker when bad luck strikes one of your riders…
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
I don't see how it's not fair
Wait for them to submit at the last second, or do it for them, what’s the difference? Mind you: the teams are valid, so they have 25 riders following all the rules.
Ah well, if it’s contentious I’ll confer with Chris on how to proceed.
Why is there a submit button than?
"Here the high school level of immaturity will be left to hottitude columns and people like myself." Der Phil. H
My point exactly
And a point of no return submit button to boot. Why deny people the chance to alter at the last minute?
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
Didn't you find
that you slept just that little bit easier after clicking the button? Maybe we should rename it next year to “The Happy Button”
Who slept better knowing the last guy they fired just won a race?
Or broke a bone, or opened his mouth in an interview.
Bicycling is the nearest approximation I know to the flight of birds. Louis J. Helle, Jr.
It's worse when they win instead
you start to think “Is that the only race he’ll win all season?” and “now everybody else is going to pick my secret weapon.”
Deny??
Own choice, man. But alright, having both a submit button and an auto-submit feature is not the most logical thing. I still fail to see why it wouldn’t be fair, though.
It's not a big deal
But as Celerity points out below people might have submitted early because they were not sure they would get around to it later due to work / vacation etc.
In my view (we’re talking technicalities here, personally I really don’t care, I just love principles and technicalities :-s) the rule was you had to submit to be able to play. People made decisions based on that rule. Changing the rule now could make people regret their decision. Ergo, not fair.
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
+1 Principle thing
If you put on the frontpage.. 24 hours to go! You expect you have to submit.. But can not really bother it
"Here the high school level of immaturity will be left to hottitude columns and people like myself." Der Phil. H
Yep, it's a non-issue
It’s a good thing the real cycling almost starts again. Gives us something interesting to talk about!
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
But another unsolved problems is begging for our attention

Leadout app I
Leadout II
Leadout III

Yeah.. If you cheat. Don't do it sooo obvious
"Here the high school level of immaturity will be left to hottitude columns and people like myself." Der Phil. H
Leadout Racing...not very creative
My VDS team is the AF-1 Leadout. The Leadout I, II, III, etc are team-mates of mine. Apparently we’re not very good at coming up with clever nicknames.
Unoriginal
I just wanted to make my name easy for my teammates to find.
Timemanagement that was!
Leadout II and III submitted at the same time.. But welcome
"Here the high school level of immaturity will be left to hottitude columns and people like myself." Der Phil. H
Same reason Ted. It's a choice to submit.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
don't get me wrong,
this doesn’t bother me in the slightest, but i guess it would have been better if we’d known there’d be an auto-submit for legit teams in advance. I actually think it’s good that there’s a submit button with point of no return and an auto-submit, but it would have been better to have known about the auto-submit, rather than finding out later. Next time.
I like the idea of submitting only
You really have to want to play this game. It would be lame if somebody won this game with a team he or she never actively submitted. I know this is a free game but there should be some action from the participants to demonstrate their eagerness to join the fun.
But it also doesn’t bother me at all…
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
but if you know
there’s an autosubmit and you’ve made sure to have a qualifying team in time and you know that you’re in when the clock chimes and the fat lady sings, and …
I think if people weren't sure if they would be around at the last minute
they would have submitter their teams earlier than they would have preferred, rather than miss out entirely by failing to submit.
What's the difference?
You still have to complete your team, sooner or later, and all the hard work is in that. Submitting is just a formality.
All I'm saying is
if my server crashes tonight or some family emergency calls me away, I would be eternally grateful for the auto-submit feature.
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
I don't disagree, but in order to avoid anyone being miffed
wouldn’t it be better to begin a competition with the feature? ‘Changing boats midstream’ etc will cause angst somewhere. And in an emergency I have no doubt that the powers that be could be flexible.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Sure, but you do understand this is the first year we've had an automated system at all?
This is so much better than leaving Chris to wrestle with a mountain of individual spreadsheet entries that I hope we can all be patient as we work through the new stuff that comes up.
I would expect a few more bumps along the way, but with luck we’ll get everything figured out this year, and it will all be smooth as a Liquiboy’s legs next year. In the meantime, a big thank you to Ted for setting up the new system!
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
Yes I understand, much was rightly made of it... and the auto submit is a great idea. Kudos to Ted too.
That doesn’t change the fact that if you change the rules midstream there’ll be hassles somewhere… and in case you’re wondering, I submitted my team last week, for all the good that will do me ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
+1 on the thank you
The improvement is mind boggling. Still, principles are principles ;-)
Groucho Marx: “Those are my principles. If you don’t like them, I have others.”
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
+1
cannot, cannot express how bummed i am that i’m at a conference tomorrow. who does this stuff on a saturday?
"well...you live in england so: you love the rain. loves the queen. hates cycling. based on mr bean had a tremendous amount of humour. all ride in a mini cooper. all getting drunk before the age of 12. getting drunk at least 3 times a day."- frinking, 7/9/09
I know the feeling
The short feeling of “this was a good decision” was sickled o’er by the pale cast of thought quickly. Now all that is left is hoping for the best.
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
You do have Franzoi in your team, right?
Otherwise Frinking will come to haunt you…
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
Is Franzoi choiseable? He's riding for BKCP, Albert's team nowadays.
"Here the high school level of immaturity will be left to hottitude columns and people like myself." Der Phil. H
I don't think he is, no.
And I wouldn’t have picked him anyway. Frinking will still hit me though as Nieve is nowhere to be seen….
ooooo
another great new fringlish word. Choiseable. Give it a franglais pronunciation and … beautiful. (by the way frinking, in the inferior standard english it would be chooseable – if that even exists – actually i doubt it even exists)
Creative though ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
French pronunciation..
Is swoiz-aab-lè??
"Here the high school level of immaturity will be left to hottitude columns and people like myself." Der Phil. H
almost
more like ch-woiz-aab-le.
ch like the beginning of “chicken”
the woi should not be pronounced o-i (in two distinct sounds) but more in a single sound, it should sound a little like “what” (without the t at the end of course)
aab is ok
and no accent on the final “e”, it should be almost silent
Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill (F. Coppi)
No. I have 12 hours and 17 minutes left.
I intend to submit after taking my mind off it by watching the rugby/biathlon/skiing tonight. And then having a gin.
Team submitted ...
… so let the game begin.
My team is ready to collect the points :-)
Just hope that I have choosen the correct twelve 1-pointers and four 2-pointers.
We will know by the end of the year.
For now: just have fun!
Funny
The number of teams that chose the most picked rider is growing a lot slower than the total number of teams over the last few days. A few days back the most picked riders was on half the teams. Now it’s around 40% of the teams that have him. Nice. That means there is a lot of diversity.
Obviously the most-picked riders were too cheap. Or to handsome to resist. Probably both.
One third of all riders in the list weren’t picked at all.
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
One of my 1 pointers just bagged a stage in Sardinia.
That will no doubt be his only victory of the entire year.
My. Team. Is. In.
Given that I won’t be able to watch a single race this year, I’m hoping my team will give me strength to get through the season. (Fuck you, Comcast.)
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.
just push the button, pull the trigger, do the deed...
it’s not your taxes after all… snicker.

I just hit the button as well. I'm going to sleep.

Tomorrow morning--once all the teams are in but before the race starts--
we so need a Het Nieueuiwuwsblad VDS Smackage thread.

I am already smacking myself
A darts at a board technique would have been better than what I came up with. I need to stop listening to the siren’s song emanating from Vaughter’s Sideburns.
20 minutes left and only 14 teams are unsubmitted...
442!! registered teams..and yes exclamation points are neccesary
Is the autosubmit still on?
Beer team is a friend of mine I’ve convinced to join today… I’m pretty sure his team is complete, but I’m pretty sure as well that he’s not home tonight so he won’t be able to register.
Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill (F. Coppi)
I don't think so
as we now only have 431 teams.
And I just spoke one of the Dutch guys who made a team (at 02:30h local time!, deadline was 06:00h) but forgot to submit it and now his team is not in.
it's ok, he's in
thank you, whoever registered him
