Vds2_medium

Update: Time is up!

Thanks to some shuffling around among servers, we have now set a deadline of Friday 9pm Pacific (a/k/a 6am Saturday in Belgium and midnight US Eastern) for you to submit your entries. You can even double-check your time remaining here! So clever, our tedvdw. If you haven't sent in your team, 'ead on over to the VDS website and get to work!

Prolonging the agony.

Now there’s a much later last minute to get my team in. I thought my suffering would be over nine hours before that. Damn you!

You took the words out of my mouth.

I was going to submit at lunchtime and get it over with but now there is far too much temptation to tinker. Bah.

by Albertina on Feb 26, 2010 4:44 AM EST up reply actions

What?

I so hurried up today to get mine in so I wouldn’t miss the deadline like I did a couple years ago. I guess I gain some sleep either way. :-)

I'm ready for this road season to wrap up. Bring on Cross!

Harrumph.

So, Hewhoshallnotbenamed had to go leak my top four to those that know who you are.

I clearly don’t have enough wine in me to make good decisions, yet. However, I’ll have the last laugh. I now have more time to drink and decide!

(And, Drew, you’re my hero for sticking up for me. If we had a VDS for podiumcafe folks you’d totally be on my team.)

Are you sure you'd want Drew on your team?

Do the Australian TT and RR championships count for points even though they happened before the deadline?

I rushed to get mine in so that I'd meet the old deadline

I’d have delayed it if I knew, but rushing has given me a strange calm. Since it was a rush-job, I have lowered my expectations entirely, and am now tranquillo.

So how many teams will remain unsubmitted

I’ll put 10 VDS points on 19.

by Lopex on Feb 26, 2010 2:21 AM EST reply actions

That's not fair

You shouldn’t be allowed to play by default. If this would have been known in advance nobody would have submitted his/her team. Just make it ok and keep the possibility to tinker when bad luck strikes one of your riders…

Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.

by Lopex on Feb 26, 2010 5:50 AM EST up reply actions

I don't see how it's not fair

Wait for them to submit at the last second, or do it for them, what’s the difference? Mind you: the teams are valid, so they have 25 riders following all the rules.

Ah well, if it’s contentious I’ll confer with Chris on how to proceed.

And a point of no return submit button to boot. Why deny people the chance to alter at the last minute?

Deny??

Own choice, man. But alright, having both a submit button and an auto-submit feature is not the most logical thing. I still fail to see why it wouldn’t be fair, though.

by tedvdw on Feb 26, 2010 7:17 AM EST up reply actions

It's not a big deal

But as Celerity points out below people might have submitted early because they were not sure they would get around to it later due to work / vacation etc.

In my view (we’re talking technicalities here, personally I really don’t care, I just love principles and technicalities :-s) the rule was you had to submit to be able to play. People made decisions based on that rule. Changing the rule now could make people regret their decision. Ergo, not fair.

don't get me wrong,

this doesn’t bother me in the slightest, but i guess it would have been better if we’d known there’d be an auto-submit for legit teams in advance. I actually think it’s good that there’s a submit button with point of no return and an auto-submit, but it would have been better to have known about the auto-submit, rather than finding out later. Next time.

by yeehoo on Feb 26, 2010 9:51 AM EST up reply actions

I like the idea of submitting only

You really have to want to play this game. It would be lame if somebody won this game with a team he or she never actively submitted. I know this is a free game but there should be some action from the participants to demonstrate their eagerness to join the fun.

But it also doesn’t bother me at all…

Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.

by Lopex on Feb 26, 2010 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

but if you know

there’s an autosubmit and you’ve made sure to have a qualifying team in time and you know that you’re in when the clock chimes and the fat lady sings, and …

by yeehoo on Feb 26, 2010 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

I think if people weren't sure if they would be around at the last minute

they would have submitter their teams earlier than they would have preferred, rather than miss out entirely by failing to submit.

by celerity on Feb 26, 2010 6:55 AM EST up reply actions

What's the difference?

You still have to complete your team, sooner or later, and all the hard work is in that. Submitting is just a formality.

All I'm saying is

if my server crashes tonight or some family emergency calls me away, I would be eternally grateful for the auto-submit feature.

I don't disagree, but in order to avoid anyone being miffed

wouldn’t it be better to begin a competition with the feature? ‘Changing boats midstream’ etc will cause angst somewhere. And in an emergency I have no doubt that the powers that be could be flexible.

Sure, but you do understand this is the first year we've had an automated system at all?

This is so much better than leaving Chris to wrestle with a mountain of individual spreadsheet entries that I hope we can all be patient as we work through the new stuff that comes up.

I would expect a few more bumps along the way, but with luck we’ll get everything figured out this year, and it will all be smooth as a Liquiboy’s legs next year. In the meantime, a big thank you to Ted for setting up the new system!

Yes I understand, much was rightly made of it... and the auto submit is a great idea. Kudos to Ted too.

That doesn’t change the fact that if you change the rules midstream there’ll be hassles somewhere… and in case you’re wondering, I submitted my team last week, for all the good that will do me ;)

almost

more like ch-woiz-aab-le.

ch like the beginning of “chicken”
the woi should not be pronounced o-i (in two distinct sounds) but more in a single sound, it should sound a little like “what” (without the t at the end of course)
aab is ok
and no accent on the final “e”, it should be almost silent

Funny

The number of teams that chose the most picked rider is growing a lot slower than the total number of teams over the last few days. A few days back the most picked riders was on half the teams. Now it’s around 40% of the teams that have him. Nice. That means there is a lot of diversity.
Obviously the most-picked riders were too cheap. Or to handsome to resist. Probably both.

One third of all riders in the list weren’t picked at all.
