VDS: Who scored what in last year's Cat 6 races

Okay, so we've got 49 new races to play with this year, amounting to 14 thousand points and some change. What effect is this going to have? How might those points get distributed? Will they mostly go to guys we've never heard of, or be a mild padding to the palmares of the stars?

There's wondering blindly, and then there's the glory of spreadsheets. Assuming all the sort functions worked as they should have (you want me to check my work? what?), in last year's editions of what are now VDS Category 6 races, 14,230 points were distributed among 210 riders. More or less--one stage was a team time trial, in which I threw up my hands and gave 5 points to each of the members of the winning team. Plus there are three races on our 2010 calendar that weren't run in 2009 (Quebec, Montreal, and Lazio), which will add an additional 795 points this year.

So, who scored what? Full results below the fold.

Star-divide

How these numbers might be useful: probably less so for the big guys than for the riders costing 6 or under. I mean, chances are if you're taking Cav, it won't be for his results in Missouri or the Sparkassen Giro Bochum. But it really might help decide among the cheapies to notice that, say, Graeme Brown picked up another 240 points in Cat 6 races. That would put him among the upper echelons of his price point, instead of the lower.

So, take a look--maybe you'll find a bargain or two...

+ a million. And our eyes are gonna pop out from watching the Giro in the am and Cali in the afternoon.

it will have less top riders.

Wait till the Giro startlist comes out

some already confirmed are CVV, Basso, Sastre, one of the Schleck’s isn’t going to Cali(I think Frank). Also some of the top sprinters will probably go to Italy seeing it’s actually sprint friendly the first two weeks. To clarify I believe it will be more hotly contested seeing many of those big names went for training in February, but there will be less big names(Cali had the best field behind the Tour last year).

by Phil H. on Feb 5, 2010 1:41 AM EST up reply actions

Add Cadel for Italy

I think Frank is having a baby in May, so probably won’t be racing.

by celerity on Feb 5, 2010 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

See here is where Phil's reasoning is wrong.

Phil, you keep thinking that the Giro and ToC are competing for the same pool of riders. They aren’t. The Giro has always had a lot of big names either skip it completely or use it for training purposes. Whole teams at the Pro Tour level skip the Giro. You and I both know that. No matter how much one loves the Giro, startlist-wise it just doesn’t compare to the Tour. That leaves a lot of room for another race to field a decent lineup.

Meanwhile, the ToC is still a .HC race, meaning that only eight Pro Tour teams will be there along with a couple Pro Conti’s and the rest Continental teams. So Phil is wrong to say that last year’s ToC had the best field after the Tour last year because you can;t have said second best field with so many Continental teams. Like in years past every team with some stake in the US will send a few top riders to the race. Like in year’s past, some of those riders will be using it for training purposes. In the end we should see pretty much the same big names there with the same rider who’s won it all but one time being the favorite again.

My whole, slightly exaggerated, team is riding the Giro.. Is that the right strategy Ursula?

You are asking me???? Seriously?

Are you even crazier that I think you are Frink? lol I mean I finished like 97th last year.

I will say that a point earned in th Giro is worth as much as a point from ToC. You just have to figure on which riders of yours are likely to make a point.

Wait wait

so because the Giro doesn’t get as many star riders the ToC will still get a bunch? Because in February it was contested next to other top races like the…..umm Volta Algarve? It was by far the biggest warm-up race, the best option in February. Now it’s by far the 2nd biggest race in May and has the Giro to compete with(yes they are competing, I will stick with that for as long as I see any reason not to, which at the moment I don’t). Also has some end of calender races like Tour of Belgium which is at the moment at the same scale as Cali(2.HC).

I have respect for guys like Carlos and Thor. It makes it even easier to work for them when they’re two superstars in the sport and they’re so down to earth. I know from experience that other superstars can be real assholes.--Heinrich Haussler

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
