Szczepaniak brothers positive for EPO at CX Worlds
Oh dear. Must say I thought their performance was a bit stunning....

Ugh.
I follow Polish road racing not cyclo-cross, but a Polish friend of mine seems to remember Paweł having a prior offense (testosterone, he thinks). If that’s indeed the case, then Paweł’s well and truly fornicated himself.
Double the "ugh."
Paweł and Kacper both qualify as repeat offenders. Paweł earned a one-year suspension after testing positive for testosterone at the Polish Championships in 2006 at the ripe old age of 17. As for Kacper, he tested positive for nikethamide a year later. He claimed that he just forgot to get one of those pesky doctor’s notes. Given the benefit of the doubt, he got a lighter sentence. So, add in the tests at Tábor, and each brother’s got a pair of positives to his name. All before the age of 21.
Well Meussen must be boiling...
he had to chase these two fuckers the whole race and he fell apart trying to do it and lost the bronze to Jouffroy.
the more things change....
"Ants don’t worry, they operate like a fantastic team, they accept obstacles and deal with them in a positive manner, they don’t complain and remain positive. An ant doesn’t work on emotion, is proactive and always chooses the ant role."
+1 Like reading about Gianni Savio's total shock and disbelief yesterday, when
one of his riders tested positive for EPO. Shocking!! (That guy should be banned from the sport, imho. How many riders have been caught under his watch, I wonder? /rant)
I think it was nice to read
that he (Savio) expects Giunti, who has confessed, to pay a fine to Androni blablabla and that he doesn’t expect Giunti’s positive to have a negative effect on the teams chances to ride the Giro.
Good to see that the burden of responsibility is shared by everyone.
So I guess that brings the gold to France
BAH!!!!....Cavendish?! Double BAH!!! Sky!!
TLP 7.0 Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent
And well deserved it was too
He rode a cracking race, looked better than Meeusen for most of it. The shitty thing though is that the way the poles ripped that race from the start it’s hard to say how the race had played out without their (apparently drugfuelled) rampage.
The one good thing out of this is
they were targeted for additional testing because of suspect levels from their biological passports. I hate that they are so young and doping, but i’m glad they were caught through procedures put in place to acutally catch them. Hopefully that will have some affect on other riders their age.
"Woof, woof, woof! That's my other dog imitation."
Does that mean
that, normally, a World Championship podium (albeit U23) doesn’t get tested on EPO? I know the tests are expensive but c’mon!, top 5 at Worlds should get tested for everything. It was their Worlds sample that tested positive, wasn’t it?
Yeah, this is similar to them saying
Di Luca was caught in the Giro because of his passport results. Dude won, what?, 2 stages and held at least one jersey nearly every day of the race. They damned well should have been testing him anyway.
I don’t think it helps their credibility to claim every pos is a victory for the passport.

I believe so but,
as I read the article, their samples might have been given extra attention based on previous dodgy levels. I don’t know if it’s standard in testing to test a sample “extra hard.” But I totally agree with you that top 5 at the WCs should be tested.

The question raised by Bikepure on Twitter
Are they part of the bio-passport? Isn’t it just riders on ProTour and certain ProConti teams that are part of the passport?
Two young crossers who don’t ride for either, how are they part of the passport?
Fair point - UCI list
Says not they not in RTP and that seems to say that no track, cross, mtb, downhill etc are in the passport – just road.
Actually Specialized MTB team can't be part of the passport but they are in the Bike Pure thing so they do testing anyways.
Nys rides for Landbouwkrediet which is a pro-conti team so they are in the pool. I cannot imagine any rider using EPO in downhill unless it was an absolute peddlers course…probably on HGH. Track would probably be the worst problem but a lot of those riders ride with big teams so they have testing. But a lot of them do slip through the cracks

Kacper tried to commit suicide
From Flemish Belgian newspaper De Morgen: http://tweetphoto.com/14478179
No word on exactly how far he got but it says he tried to use a knife in his room when his father walked in and was able to prevent him from killing himself. Story apparently confirmed by brother Pawel. Telenet manager Van Kasteren says that he learned that a Polish coach got them on EPO. “That man needs to be banned from cycling.” Also, “Never to be approved, it is still a bit understandable” while talking about their decision to take EPO in light of their father earning €250 a month and the Polish team’s Worlds winning bonus being €2500.
Truly sad.
I’m curious as to who actually purchased the EPO. Given the family’s financial situation, how could the brothers even afford to cheat to such a degree? I’ll admit that I’m clueless as to the going rate for doping products, but I have to imagine that EPO costs a fair bit more than testosterone and nikethamide. The family’s financial straits make the allegations of a coach’s involvement seem much more plausible. Not that that makes the brothers immune from prosecution, of course. As for Kacper, I hope that he’s safe and that he’s getting proper counseling and care. I actually wish that the family had chosen to keep that particular piece of information private. He’s under enough of a microscope already. Most importantly, though, as Albertina said, he’s got many years ahead of him, and no one wants to see his story end that way.
CN is reporting that Kasper Szczepaniak attempted suicide
but was stopped by his father. As for motivation to dope, his team manager points out that the Szczepaniaks’ father makes 250 euros a month.
The kid is 19. Really fucking sad.

Oh Lord, that is totally awful.
It’s a bad situtation but Kacper still has his whole life ahead of him…nothing can be that bad. Sheesh.
Appallingly sad...
and offers some explanation why some sportspeople take the risk. I’m not condoning drug taking, but I don’t always think it’s black and white..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Very sad...
but it shows why kids from Eastern Europe/Asia have a reason to dope, to escape the lifestyle and help the family/themselves out.
It is a shame that it had to come to this though.

Kacper Szczepaniak denies reports of his attempted suicide.
In a radio interview, he accuses the Belgian media of fabricating the story. He says that he never contemplated suicide and wants to prove that he’s capable of competing at the highest level. Meanwhile, he and Paweł declined to have their B samples tested (because of the financial costs inherent in the re-testing), and the Disciplinary Committee of PZKol (the Polish Cycling Association) will meet at the end of month to determine the appropriate sanctions. Given the brothers’ prior histories, a pair of two-year bans seems the likely outcome.
Pawel should be eligible for a life time ban or at least a 4 year ban since he all ready served a ban previously
