Its riders should be picking up points later, though. (Maybe not Nys, haha. Sorry. I do admire putting him on your team.)

Yeah I am disappointed by Levi too.

I expected more from him today. And Brajkovic.

Really did you?

because last time I checked Paris-Nice still hasn’t been relocated to California.

Nice one Figure!

But ti elaborate just a bit, I figured pre-race that Levi was at least a stalking horse for Lance/The Shack in that he could be somewhat near Bert on the climbs and time trial. Then cam the prologue and, yes, Levi was right there with Bert making me think he had some form.

Then today’s stage and right before the final climb Levi was right there lurking with all the other climby guys…and that was the last we saw of him as he went straight backwards, finishing 1:09 in back of Bert and well behind all sorts of guys who shouldn’t ever outperform Levi on such a climb. And it looks like Brajkovic was pacing him to the top too. It doesn’t make sense to me, not after the prologue. Yeah, Levi is looking to peak at California but that was one pathetic effort by Levi. He should have a better base than that.

Now Frank Schleck was also on the same time as Levi, which is also disappointing. Maybe he was just using the race to get in shape?

Saxo DS Kim Andersen says

Fränk is badly affected by the weather. That may well go for some other less chunky riders. Jani and his 0,0004% bodyfat comes to mind.

by Jens on Mar 11, 2010 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah......no

I can see that to some degree but it wasn’t like we saw Bert’s or A’s or Samu’s etc. A-games out there today. Plus last I looked none of them are fatsos like Barbie Barbie is.

by ursula on Mar 11, 2010 9:56 PM EST up reply actions

Dude, look at the conditions they are racing in

I don’t know if it’s all sunshine and balmy weather all the time in Orey-gon but it is just silly to dismiss the effects the weather has. There are riders who’s performances are affected even by normal warm/cold/rain variation and what we are seeing is way beyond normal. Look at the comments that are coming out of this race. 95 % don’t give a shit about the results they just want to know to keep their hands warm enough to hang on to the handlebars the whole stage. It’s not a videogame, it’s real people we are talking about.

Another factor is motivation. If this is an important race to you, it’s likely that you will go to greater lenghts to overcome the conditions. If you are a good rider who is just hoping to get a good results if things go well, you are more likely to shut down and not care so much.
Then there is the illness factor. People want to avoid exposing themselves to the extent that they come down with cold and illness that will affect their spring season. Guys like Conta and SamSan can say “fuck it, my next goal is in July” while other want to do well in the Ardennes and in May and can’t afford to take risks in this part of the season. Of course that is going to affect how they race.

by Jens on Mar 12, 2010 12:57 AM EST up reply actions

I do hear you. Really I do.

And I read that motivation is a key in dealing with the cold or any other tough weather such as was at KBK. Where does that motivation come from for the riders or to put it in a Jens!-ian way as Cosmo graphically designed it this winter with his Jens! Factor poster, what is the attitude of the riders?

Sating that say Schleck is saving himself for the Ardennes doesn’t hold up much when Bert or Samu (and a few others at P-N) are gunning for the earlier Pais Vasco and is so more vulnerable to having his spring messed up from catching a cold than any rider looking at the Ardennes. The same with Chavanel and his cobbles campaign. None of these guys is in top shape and the weather is making it all the harder. Yet some have the ’tude to push on and other just want to survive.

But I am not calling Schleck or Levi wimps even if they have a very different attitude than Jens! They just have a much tighter focus in races that they care about: 1) Tour, 2) Tour, 3) Tour, 4) California (Levi) and Ardennes (Schleck) 5) Tour. This kind of focus is not new obviously but it would be interesting to compare these two philosophical camps in terms of which group tends to best meet their goals in a season. Obviously both groups have their very successful champions. Plus there are some riders (and teams) that have a hard time setting realistic agendas (Cunego for example). I have no answers here, except with some older riders such as Levi one has to always be wondering if we are starting to see them losing their forms for good.

by ursula on Mar 12, 2010 2:06 AM EST up reply actions

Well ok then

I just see this race as an outlier, the conditions make it useless for drawing any conclusions about anyone in the same maner that K-B-K with it’s loony weather was useless for evaluating anyones cobbles-form – nobody really believes Bobbie Traksel and Ian Stannard will be forces to recon with or that Boonen /Devolder are on a downward trajectory based on that Sunday.

As for Bert and Samu “gunning” for Pais Vasco, I don’t really believe anyone “guns” for PV. Sure they’d love to do well there but if they got a slight case of the snuffles or something came up like a hairdressers-appointment or whatever, they could gladly skip it without it being any sort of blow to their season.

by Jens on Mar 12, 2010 5:59 AM EST up reply actions

I was joking

I agree, focusing on only two races a year is weak sauce but apparently what Levi is doing. Compare that to Bert who has already won a stage race and is going and all out here and definitely at Pais Vasco(we’ll see about Catalunya). The Tour is in July and it isn’t time to take it easy for it yet and I don’t care if it’s your home town race, doing 3 months of prep for a 2.HC race is dumb.

by Phil H. on Mar 11, 2010 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

And as for Levi

He did decently at Algarve. This is a step back.

Sigh. I guess some riders are more affected by the cold, but I am surprised how much. As we see in the picture of Jens this is all attitude and to me a rider who lets the cold slow him down a lot more than his peers is not so mentally tough. But then we knew that about Levi and now we know it about Frank. Everyone struggled today in the same cold. But some fought through it.

by ursula on Mar 11, 2010 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

My reply above goes to this as well

Toughness has so little to do with it if you ask me.

by Jens on Mar 12, 2010 12:59 AM EST up reply actions

I think that the obvious is missing here...

Jens! is motivated for this. In his career, and at this stage in his career this win would have been huge. The Frank Schlecks etc may have other fish to fry. That said, we laugh about cold and heat here and dismiss them. For me, working outside in the cold is excruciating, whilst others feel the same way about heat or humidity. It’s ingenuous to dismiss the weather.

by Seahorse on Mar 12, 2010 2:57 AM EST up reply actions

thing is everyone has to do deal with the same cold

it definitely slows everyone down. But if a skinny little spaniard can deal with it …. Actually several skinny little spaniards dealt with it yesterday – and Caisse has been racing hard all race in these conditions.

by yeehoo on Mar 12, 2010 5:22 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not apologising or excusing anyone, but we react differently to heat and cold

irrespective of our weight. And I believe motivation-such as the motivation i believe Jens! has at the moment – makes a difference. The same motivation seems to exist for Levi at ToC.
The psychology of racing matters too I think…

I'm with Seahorse here

and I think that beyond motivation, how we react to weather is totally individual. Individuals just handle different types of weather differently.
The most public and odd example is the “chunky” northener Ullrich and the trimmed texan Armstrong. One would expect the former to melt and suffer in the sun and the southener Armstrong to suffer in the cold and rain. The exact opposite was true.

I think you really should let the first live threads go to 400 a 500 comments...

It makes the result thread better readable… And… Can we please get the Post race/result thread back?

by Frinking on Mar 11, 2010 2:28 PM EST reply actions

If I may reply for others

1) Yeah we can have the threads go longer. However there are natural breaks where it feels right to start a new thread and today was at the bottom of the next to last climb which is what majope did.

2) And right after the stage was done several of us including me and majope had other things to do. Like work. We had no time to put up another thread. That’s the way it goes sometimes. Note that there have been post race threads this week so it’s not like we have gotten rid of them.

by ursula on Mar 11, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

There was no you.. More generally spoken...

But previous results had also the top 5 of the race…(So now it should have TA and PN par example) Perfect to get a quick update and reminder etc..

by Frinking on Mar 11, 2010 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry man.

All I can say is that post race threads will vary a bit due to the nature of the races and the time we Eds have for writing them.

As someone who has tried planning when to split the threads

I can say it’s damn near impossible to predict how many more comments will come at any given point in the stages. Since a lot of people, due to bandwidth, type of computer and whatnot, experience sluggishness in the threads at about 300 comments (when the posting is relatively intense) that’s when we try to jump.

Stage 2 question

Can anybody explain why the riders that crashed at the end of the second stage came in 2 plus minutes down and were not given the same time as the pack?

by Logy on Mar 11, 2010 5:51 PM EST reply actions

Martin, MArtin and Casper?

They were.. Only in the results they finished 158,159 an 160. But in the same time as the peloton
