It must be Milano-Sanremo Week.

Lars Boom seems to think so, anyway.

Boasson Hagen?

Not a bad pick, but I wouldn’t call him the clear favorite – or favourite, for that matter.

I guess I’m trying to decide whether Cavendish is out of shape or just chilling and waiting for his moment. Dude likes to play it, doesn’t he?

by gavia on Mar 16, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm

Cav doesn’t have many miles in his legs does he?

by cyclingdiva on Mar 16, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Ditto!

He crashed today. I couldn’t really tell what happen either…
I think Boonen and Benna are the two favorites. Benna is in great form and has the strongest team. I’m kind of bummed that CTT isn’t sending Bos in HH place.

by cyclingdiva on Mar 16, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably too long for Bos

at this point in his career as a roady dude.

by gavia on Mar 16, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

?

He looked like he’s on form today. The team-organization looked a little scruffy and he was wasting energy too early.

by Jens on Mar 16, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I've only seen today

He was up there wasn’t he? Has he been looking bad?

by Jens on Mar 16, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He has been in a very good position in several of the sprints. But he has "exploded" (in a bad way) on the finishing str8.

He didn’t sprint to the line once. IMHO he has been looking bad in the sprints. But at least he was able to get into position. There is håp in the hanging snore.

by Holdenmate on Mar 16, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Do u honestly think Thor has a chance in a group sprint with his current speed?

Thor always goes early. It seems to me that he does not have the explosive speed in his legs nor the power he is reknowned for. So I don’t think he will win. I don’t even think he will be able to make the top 5 in agroup sprint. I may be wrong. It has happened before.

by Holdenmate on Mar 16, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

It looks like

Dom is going in place of HH. Should be interesting!
Thor has been up there but remember he is coming back from being sick.

by cyclingdiva on Mar 16, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

That is true.

I may be overly pessimistic. I do have a tendency to be overly critical when the comes to Norwegian riders and their chances of success. For instance I think it is unlikely (given the length of the race) that EBH will win MSR. I also think he should learn to sprint in a str8 line. But he is the boss though. ;)

by Holdenmate on Mar 16, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Dom will DOMINATE!

cause that’s what he does.

what sort of dental problem keeps you off the bike for that long? I got a nasty infection a few years back on a Saturday night that kept me awake half the night, but I got some antibiotics the next day, and the pain was gone that evening. I couldn’t remotely justify ringing up sick on Monday.

And I couldn’t eat solids for 2 weeks, by the end of which I was in a pretty sad state.

That would do it , considering professional athletes have to imbibe a significantly greater number of calories than the average person.

He had a painful tooth abscess that needed to be drained.

Heh

I think I’m going to pass on the more info there. Yuck?

by gavia on Mar 16, 2010 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Assuming that the drainage procedure succeeded completely

(as the article notes) and minus any mention of related teeth extraction, I’m guessing that the braces are an altogether different issue. My sympathies to him having to spend so much time in the dentist’s and orthodontist’s chairs.

(Btw, the photo of McGowan’s a gazillion times more nauseating that majope’s link.)

by discolite on Mar 17, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I give him as much chance as last year, guilty of stealing this line of rbjhan.

Which is zero..

He haven’t even contesting a sprint in the Tirreno.. At least he did that last year.. And EBH.. 270km? is way too long for the youngster

by Frinking on Mar 16, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think it's too long for him at this point.

He’d have to win it from a distance, and that’s a big ask, even with his level of talent. I suppose it’s possible if the right break formed on the Poggio or somewhere on the stretch before it, but a bit of a long-shot in my view.

by gavia on Mar 16, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

So, Frinky Boy

Who is the favourite? I don’t really agree either, my pick is Boonen.

Bennati en Petacchi seems ready to climb and sprint.. So put my money there

by Frinking on Mar 16, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Benna and Peta

And Boonen’s looking good so far this season. He’s never won it, so why not?

Pozzato, obvy, though he has to go from farther out.

by gavia on Mar 16, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

With Cav in limbo

and no clear pecking order among the leadouts, I predict this is a year for the non-sprint win. Pozzato or Gilbert is the remaining question.

by Jens on Mar 16, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Why is everyone convinced that this will end in bunch sprint ?

I think it an outside chance, but would love to see Rogers pull off a Cancellara (surely that is a well understood term now that does not need further qualification?)

Or how about “a Kelly” – I forget the year (early 90’s), but the race where Kelly chased down Argentin – brilliant, absolutely brilliant finish!

by muk on Mar 16, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

lol

Well, I’m definitely not convinced it’ll be a bunch sprint :-)

I like Gilbert’s chances at just about any race on the calendar. In fact, I think he’s a better shot to do all five monuments than Cancellara.

by gavia on Mar 16, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, good point

Don’t think so. And in fact, I think even he has said he doesn’t fancy his chances there. So yeah, he’s got but-one on the monument scale.

by gavia on Mar 16, 2010 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Um, at least once, in 2007..

Assan Bazayev and Rui Costa went down really hard in the closing KM after Rui Costa got bumped sideways by an unknown assailant (who I would guess is the culprit, given the video). Anyone heard about them? They both looked hurt to me.
