Open Thread: Milano-Sanremo

Msr_new_medium

It's Milano-Sanremo Friday! I have a course post on the way. And there's lots of news circulating around the internets. Consider this thread the place for all Milano-Sanremo news.

I'll start with two tidbits:

Lance Armstrong, who rode Milano-Sanremo last year, will not take the start tomorrow. His reason? Acute gastro-intestinal distress. The stomach virus, always the bestest of excuses.

Hennie Kuiper, meanwhile, has picked Lars Boom of Rabobank as tomorrow's winner. Bold call, since Boom will ride La Primavera for the first time tomorrow.

In slightly un-related news - or at least, news unrelated to Milano-Sanremo, Heinrich Haussler will miss the Spring Classics due to his knee injury. Bah knee injuries! Hopefully, Barbie will be back in action before too long!

Got news? Post it up!

That's really rough,

Was he meant to be riding any GTs this year? Although he couldn’t replace a win at Flanders with any other result.

I know its been suggested here that the Poggio and Cipressa would be his undoing....

and it’s probably true, but I’m still curious if Theo Bos will be in attendence. Anybody know?

don't think so.

It seems that Dominique Rollin’s going to be the one replacing Barbie.

Actually Xavier Florencio was replacing Haussler

Dom replaced Martin Reimer who was in no shape

The one title I don't see on an otherwise impressive palmares is "Nationalist to a fault"

I think he’s suggesting more that he’d like to see LB win, not that he is really the fav. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge Boom advocate as my comments and posts here should testify, but does he really think EBH is going to get beat by a fish out of water ?

I wouldn't put it past Boom actually

hes shown versatility in his young road racing career, and maybe he creates a surprise if he gets in an elite group, and pulls off a daring attack towards the end. Thats especially if some of the sprinters get dropped of the organization tails off. Not the likeliest of scenarios, but you never know how it’ll go sometimes.

by benrazor on Mar 19, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah a tour stage would be one of the nicest things he could win.

He’s not going to be riding the worlds though, is he? Because he’s not German anymore, and he’s not Australian yet, or something. Maybe someone better informed can clarify that. Paris-Tours he could try, too. The real late season prize would be Lombardy, I suppose, but I don’t know if anyone would fancy him much for that. Probably the same could have been said about Gilbert, though: he wasn’t considered that type of rider.

by Triki on Mar 19, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

He switched from German to Oz in time to ride the upcoming worlds. But I could be wrong.

I read something fairly recently where he said he still hadn't made the decision

and would decide later in the season. The sticking point is having to give up his German citizenship.

Of course, it seems he’ll have some time off now to think about it…

somebody help me out here

I’ve always had a bad habbit of over-analyzing things, but is that like his ghost (HH)? Or perhaps he’s been visited by “the ghost of classics future” and shown his fate? Ooooor…… is he depicted as like a messiah type of figure….aka “he has risen!”? btw: I’d love to know the other names on the tombstones, the one’s we can’t see.

From Cervelo website
Cervélo TestTeam rider Heinrich Haussler will be out of competition until he fully recovers from the knee problem that has plagued him since a crash in the Volta ao Algarve. After initial treatment and recovery, he crashed again in Paris-Nice, suffering another contusion of the same knee. “Heinrich has a contusion of the left knee, with injury of the quadriceps tendon,” said Dr. Andreas Goesele, the team’s Chief Medical Officer. “We are performing intensive treatments every day, involving both physiotherapy and osteopathy. At the moment, we do not know when he will return to racing, but the most important thing is that he heals completely. In elite sport you have to be completely fit to perform well.”

“I am glad that we know what the problem is and that it can be fixed. The classics time is the most important part of my season, and I am very disappointed, but I will come back when I am fully recovered—and I will come back stronger. This is just making me more focused,” said Haussler.

“We will miss Heinrich, but we still have a very strong classics team, and we will maintain our focus on these races,” said Sports Director Jean-Paul van Poppel. “In our goal races our riders have to be 100% fit.”

I haven’t seen predictions of how long he’s out for. What was the source for that?

Well, De Ronde is ust over two weeks away.

It might be fair to assume that’s off, at least. Roubaix isn’t all that far off either, obviously.

by Triki on Mar 19, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

quadriceps tendon eh?

If they aren’t giving any timeline then I suppose that he ruptured it? That’s a month at least or possibly two. Depending how bad rehab can take another two months after that, so four months total. That would put him at possibly missing the Tour at the extreme though its much more likely that his rehab will be shorter.

I know its a bit of a PdC faux-pas....but

since I don’t see anything else here about the San Dimas Stage Race this weekend, does anybody know if F Landis is supposed to ride? I live ten minutes from all three stages, and I wouldn’t mind seeing for myself if he’s as fat and drunk as people allege. If he’s there, I’d love to see him rise from his ashes like a great phoenix, and win the whole damn thing.

I saw him last week in Murrieta

he did a bunch of work in the Crit to bring back a good sized break, maybe 10, to give his guys a chance in the sprint. He didn’t look too fat or too drunk from where I was sitting.

Thank you for returning to my life cross season!

But seriously, he does make the sensible observation that Boonen. I also find that it interesting that he says Spartacus is not at the very top of his game right now. Finally, while giving a nod to all the Italian favorites—Pipo and Bennati—he goes with Petacchi as the best of the local talent.
