VeloNews Reports David Clinger Positive, 2009 Road Nationals
VeloNews is reporting that David Clinger tested positive during 2009 National Championship. He finished second in the race, and has lost the result. This was the elite national championship in Bend, not the US Pro in Greenville. The substance was synthetic T and Mondafinil. He apparently had prescriptions for both, but did not file the TUE properly.

Another sad one
Interesting circumstances too. I doesn’t sound like he acted flagrantly just stupidly. If you know you should file a TUE then do so before you race. After reading the article about his drug use last year, I really hope he can get it together and live out his days in peace.
Thank you for returning to my life cross season!

Can someone explain
to me how synthetic T and Mondafinil are valid medical treatments for cyclists? Hearing the issue above is him not turning in the TUE as the problem, not the doc prescribing them, only aids in pointing to how some get away with it.
If a rider needs such measures to recover or heal from something, maybe they need to take a year off of the sport to do so. To take such things and compete is just wrong in my eyes and I haven’t heard much of a defense on how this should be okay.
I'm ready for this road season to wrap up. Bring on Cross!
I tend to agree about the year off and all...
…but maybe Clinger just can’t afford to not race. I mean, the vast majority of these cyclists aren’t making millions (or even hundreds of thousands), so a year off to do what?
Anyway, I don’t get why filing a TUE allows this to be okay either…just saying that it seems a year off is not an option for the vast majority of cyclists out there…

Elite
Wouldn’t the Elite championships mean that the riders are amateurs and not professionals. This was the Elite race in Bend not the Pro Road Race in Greenville. I would assume that the riders were not getting paid a salary, but I don’t know exactly how that works (I think some amateurs are paid a stipend).
I'm not sure of the circumstances
and I don’t want to imply I do. I just don’t understand how those items on the banned list are okay via a TUE. To me, that makes a TUE a cheaters easy way out if they make sure to file papers from a doctor (who if prescribing such would appear a bit shady). I’m sure there are exceptions and I’m sure someone can say why these items would be medically necessary but the TUE thing sounds a bit bogus. Maybe I need to understand how it’s not cheating just because a TUE says so.

Kinda like how there's so many sprinters with asthma (cough, cough, cough)...
You’re right though…if it’s banned, why provide an exemption?

Flatbagger...
…is an excellent example of someone who needs synth T for a valid health reason. It’s a damn necessary hormone, and he can’t produce it. So there are certainly cases where it’s indicated for perfectly valid medical reasons.
not sure about this perticular incident, but
it seems, from the couple things i’ve read on the subject, that david hasn’t had the easiest time dealing with things. sad story.

Not Clinger!!!!
I would have suspected maybe Col. Flagg or Hawkeye…
I miss Paolo Bettini. That is all.
Flagg is a good bet

A few thoughts
I found the story interesting for a few reasons:
1. He declared on the doping form that he was taking the drugs and he knew he didn’t have an exemption. To me this means, he knew they were on the banned and that he needed an exemption. Sorta like he said, hey, just to let you know, I’m breaking the rules.
2. I don’t know if this means he didn’t understand the rules or if he wanted a reason to dispute a possible positive result. Since he had been a pro for years, one would think he was rather familiar with the rules.
3. It appears that Matthew Busche was 5th in both the Elite and Pro road races last year. I guess he was both one of the best amateurs and pro riders last year. The elite race was on July 30th and the pro race was on August 30th.
He, Matt Busche, signed with Kelly Benefits a few weeks later and did Utah then U.S. Pro

Thanks
I remembered his name as a skyrocketing cyclist last year – but I didn’t realize he was still unsigned in late July. It will be interesting to see how he will do on Radio Shack this year – I haven’t heard anything about him so far.
He has only done two races so far, in support of Horner at Sardegna...
hopefully he gets his own chances this year. To go from a Cat 2 to a Pro Tour rider is a big jump in the people you are riding against but hopefully he handles it well.

He was either waaay out of the know or something is really fishy about this...
They had the expert witness, some doctor, say that the blood test that first allowed Clinger to be prescribed testosterone was not interpreted right and he should not have been given it. Either way, it is his fault for not filling out a TUE but it is a shame since he is a recovering drug addict.

Snicker... why are you always the one brave enough to say what others (me) are thinking?

But I think your response is predictable. I don’t think anyone here is totally surprised considering his history. He has found it difficult to get out of his own way in the past. Link

File this away too
He rides for very small Utah based squad that may not be fully up on all the ins and outs of TUE’s and such. No justification, just a possibility. By local I mean LBS local.
