Freire, Boonen, Petacchi, and Gaspa for me

Not quite 1000 points from the race (995, I think!)

by Phil H. on Mar 20, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

That's how it turned out, yes, maybe.

Bennati could have used another guy in front of him. It was really incredible how long Oss kept at it but with Benna in 2nd, one could sense Benna would be forced to go too early to hold off the guys in his wheel.

Benna had no acceleration when Oss was done. Freire and Boonen needed very few meters to get past him.

by Jens on Mar 20, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going to ask the same question

They will have some long discussions in the Liquigas headquarters tonight. Oss faded just a little too soon. But Benna probably still would have lost it. He was in the back of the group going up the poggio. Not a good sign, maybe they gave Nibali permission to have a go then.

Petacchi will also regret the moment when he saw his teammate die on the Poggio…

I think he did fairly well today

It’s just that he is a poor man’s Petacchi. He has no jump but relies on grinding his competitors off his wheel. Problem is whenever a fast jumper gets a good ride/wheel he will always beat Benna in the final 200 m.

by Jens on Mar 20, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah he did well

but the notion that he would have won if Nibali hadn’t attacked seem a bit far fetched to me, maybe look at Pelli on the Cipressa more although that did get rid of some sprinters. Oh and Lopex mentioning Lampre cracking on the Poggio, where the hell was Cunego there?

Proud member of Thuggetz nation.

by Phil H. on Mar 20, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure he is

I see he finished with a Lampre teammate 1.35 down so maybe he was on the Poggio(although I can’t remember seeing him). But he may not be on top form but I doubt he is that far off, Gilbert is going for the Ardennes as well and he was there.

Proud member of Thuggetz nation.

by Phil H. on Mar 20, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

But Gilbert has said all along

Meh I think it has more to do with Cunego scheduling his season wrong

but now that he has gotten over the “I’m a GT contender dammit!” phase I can see him doing well at MSR and Ardennes. I don’t ask for him to go for the win but help out his teammate will he.

I thought he did a superb job, given that today’s his first start in MSR. In fact, he’s had a strong beginning to the season overall. Right,

I used the built-in link function which is broken because it uses target=“new”. That should be target=“_blank” to really get a new window every time. If you already used one of those broken links before, and you stayed in that window, you are now in a window named “new” and those links like mine will open in that same window. I sometimes correct by hand, replacing new with _blank, but not this time.

Gasparotto

Looking pretty good this year. Already scored more VDS points than the 75 from last year.
In 2008 with Barloworld he had a great year, scoring 713 VDS points. 331 of those had been gathered after a splendid Tirreno (2nd overall + points) and a 12th place in MSR.
This year he was 13th and has 130 points in the bag. So he is lagging his 2008 schedule a bit. But this might be more than compensated by the fact that he is in a protour squad this year. He’ll race more of the high-point races. Won’t win a lot of them maybe but top10-20 placings also bring in points. At 2 points he won’t be this years HH but 400-500 points seems plausible. Good news for the 52 teams that have him aboard. Should have been 53, but Ursula chickened out…

Ha!

He was one of three 2 pointers that I let go near the end of making my team. I figured that he would be better managed by Astana than what Lampre did the year before. It’s good to see him get his mojo back. And f Astana does in fact get serious about the cobbles next year, he should do better still.

First Dutchmen in was Terpstra (41st) with Kroon, Tankink and Langeveld in the same group at 1’40.
Leezer, Boom and Tjalingii at 6’12. But that was because they were told to mark Cav and EBH who finished in the same group.

Martens was the real hero today at Rabo. His gear system got stuck in his wheel just before le Manie. He still managed to get back in front by jumping from one group of stragglers to the next.
That is something to dislike about cycling. A lot of cool stuff happening but you only hear about the winners.

I just don't get this race

I think I build it up to high because it’s the first monument and everyone’s excited, but in the end, it feels like a boring Tour stage. Sure, the pack is trimmed down, and the final bumps are a little twist, but in the end, i just think it’s all kind of boring. I hope they don’t take my cycling fan card away from me.

by PopUp Rolen on Mar 20, 2010 4:29 PM EDT reply actions

i understand this comment. 300 kms for a sprint finish? But I think it’s the finer points. Boonen exhausted and unable to sprint ….. riders with no support … etc.

But, agreed, for me ( a casual fan), it is no where near my favourite race.

by Willj on Mar 20, 2010 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed about the finer points, but those are better to read about in post-race analysis

It’s hard to appreciate the finer points on the road. I am able to catch about 90% of the races every year that are shown online, and I honestly believe that Wednesday’s Nokere Koers was more exciting than today. Probably a lot of this has to do with the buildup of MSR, but meh, it just doesn’t appeal to me.

In seven hours, we had a weak attack by Michael Rogers, a semi strong attack by Nibali, and Pippo taking a flyer, but then sitting up when he realized he didn’t have it. There was promise with Fabian, but I think he was riding for Matti, which caused him to hang out at the back of the race instead of going for it.

just to add

the one great thing about Tour races is ….

when a top rider has a tough day …. he has no choice but to tough it out. In a one – day, he can get off his bike.

It's exciting

Last year, I was loaded with GC guys and didn’t have a very strong Classics team. So, VDS wise, I spent most of the spring waiting for stage races. I tried to even that out a little bit this year, and I have to say it feels like a good decision, at least for one day.

Anyway, I see that out teams share eight riders, and it had me wondering whether there’s a way of finding out which team is most similar to mine (other than clicking on 440+ team names). Also, are there any instances of teams sharing 15-20 riders or so? I’d find that kind of stats interesting…

Any chance the list can appear at the bottom of each team so that is viewable when you click on teams from the Teams list. Would be well interesting.

by andrewp on Mar 20, 2010 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll try it for now

but it’s rather straining on the database so it could make the site a bit sluggish. Of course, it really is static info since rosters can’t change anymore, so I guess I could cache the info somewhere. Sigh.

by tedvdw on Mar 20, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

That you can achieve that so quickly

is not only impressive. it makes me covetous of the skills involved.

But agree in the long run speed of site should remain paramount. Time wasting tomorrow am now sorted. Ta.

Super, Ted.

In addition to learning that most common team (7 riders) to mine is Frinking’s, I discovered that Fromagerie Duval is first among teams with Kai Reus on the their rosters.

I wasn’t going to do VDS this year because my favorite riders from previous years’ teams got priced out and I’m too busy with work, kids, blab, blab, blab-but you made it so easy, user friendly, and clean-looking that I couldn’t not do it. Thanks.

Anybody else see Cav for the firs time and think

“What’s Salvatore Commesso doing in this race?” He’s got some pudge on him.

On the upside, good on him for riding hard even though he had to know he was under form. 300K is a great day of training.

Oh, and Oscarito absolutely walked away from everyone. That was just a tremendous burst of speed that Boonen could do nothing about.
