I know we didn't have it last year, but then it was during the Giro.
Was hoping that without such competition, somebody would bother.

Bah... Stupid Runitout
I thought for some reason Pais Vasco started this week. Even though it’s still march.
Hmmm. Catalunya. Well, it’s better than no racing at all. Three cheers for Cofidis in this race- that’s where my money lies.

Dumoulin rocks... my first (and possibly best VDS points).

I saw your team for the first time..
Cludstreet.. who knew.. But Latern Rouge is going to be close.. (:
'Cloudstreet'... named after the best Australian novel ever written...

Cloudstreet might be the Lanterne Rouge but that's okay
because I like them all ;)

You Pleb! You're in the book Frinky... if you could understand the slang you'd love it...
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
My favourite sentence from the novel..
‘The whole restless mob of us…skylarking and chiacking about for one clean, sweet day in a good world in the midst of our living’.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
And I learn a new word!
Never seen ‘chiack’ before—had to look it up.

it means 'teasing'
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Best ever written?
Bloody hell, that’s a big call. I can’t disagree, since I’ve not yet read it, but I’ve read some crackers. And I own it. Was thinking of a Dickens next, though…
Dickens: it may not be true that he was paid by the word
but he sure reads like it.
1974 is so long ago. Nearly thirty years.--Mark Cavendish
Ah, yes
The lyrical, yet majestic sweep of his pen takes a while to come to rest. But the journey is sweet.
Are you talking about 'Cloudstreet'?
… because you should be.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
'Sweet' in Oz has a secondary meaning..
it’s to do with fulfillment and a kind of generosity..

i thought that was tolkien

you know that the whole point of the Lord of the Rings
was an excuse to create the Elvish language?
He was a weird chap.
I thought it was an excuse for Orlando Bloom to become an actor...

I think that 'meh' would cover it, although I feel guilty saying it.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
It was a faithful adaptation--quite well done, really.
But I can’t wait to see what Guillermo del Toro does with The Hobbit. His Hellboy II was very cool.
1974 is so long ago. Nearly thirty years.--Mark Cavendish
i know. I didn't mind the book or the film..
but they didn’t inspire passion. And in case you haven’t noticed, passion and books go together for me.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I first read LOTR when I was 9.
Total passion on my part. But I agree that the movies didn’t quite hit the heights.
1974 is so long ago. Nearly thirty years.--Mark Cavendish
i was marginally older, but they didn't float my boat...
Perhaps it was my younger sisters raving about its merits…
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I saw the movie first before reading the book...
The first chapters about the whole families and who is who, first 100 pages were rubbish, but after that pretty good.. But the movies were also great
I liked the books, self-indulgent as they were
Although Tom Bombadil was a disgrace to literature.
And the first film was good. The second not bad. The third was cinematic onanism.
Listen, i'm determined to reach the gutter...
Why won’t you read Winton?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
No particular reason
That is, I will. One day. You’ll know when I do.
For all my spruiking, I rarely ever say anyone must read anything...
you not reading Winton is just wrong. You channel him.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'

Probably true..
I think we kept some things that the Brits came to believe were too uncouth.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Or just too obscure
I heard that ‘skerrick’ is Australian, from some Yorkshire dialect.

Shit Drongo. You not reading Winton is a travesty.

I gave up on Don Quixote, though. Even though so many great authors love it. I felt like it was the literary version of an endless, bad Mel Brooks film.
Speaking of Brooks...

I don't restrict my reading to Australian authors, Seahorse
I wasn’t suggesting Dickens was the best Australian novelist, either. Just that I was taking my time to turn the first page on Cloudstreet. I conclusion, I see, that you have already drawn.

I do not recall ever participating in a thread which has persisted in the gutter quite like the… effort… above ;-).
Anyways, I’m building up my form for Holy Week :-). I’ve had some massive, massive sleep issues. Over a fortnight with runs of 4 or so days with a maximum of 4hrs sleep, broken by days with luxurious ‘catch-up’ sleeps of 5-6hrs. It has taught me a whole new meaning of ‘despair’. [yeah yeah, I am sure that there are folks out there who survive like that, and consider it ‘normal’. Such people are freaksspecial].
I’m thinking that I need to take some leave – have a small ‘holiday at home’. I’d planned to use my leave to take most of the Tour off work… sigh… I might just have to study the parcours and be really selective – I need a break a bit sooner than July…
Do it! take a holiday... you need to be well for you..

if the operation necessitated Nibali removing his head from his hindquarters first. If you haven’t seen GreylockGrinder’s post-MSR quote thread, Nibali was NOT supposed to take off like that:
Nibali was supposed to be in the leadout train, although it might not have been enough to beat Freire, who was overpowering. But the instructions at the start were a bit different from how things turned out: Vincenzo was free to play his own card on the ascent or the descent of the Poggio, but not on the flat during the finale
I picture a frown marring the smoothness of Benna’s face.
1974 is so long ago. Nearly thirty years.--Mark Cavendish
Perhaps not, but poor Oss buried himself before Benna was left in the wind far too early.
I think he has a right to be slightly miffed.
I was thinking more of that pic of Nibali with his tongue stuck out, actually.
(I’m sure he wasn’t supposed to take off like that. But I rather like him for doing it. & I agree with Jens).

However, Zomegnan admitted to Dutch media that only one team from the Netherlands will be amongst the 22 teams he announces on Monday.
