Question:
They say European races are just plain harder than US races, longer faster, bigger. They say adapting to the entire European scene is a large part of teh battle. What has been the hardest part of acclimatizing to the European circuit so far?
by Christopher See on Mar 24, 2010 2:58 PM EDT reply actions
true that! it sounds sort of redundant, but longer, faster, harder are all true. the real kicker is it seems like guys are willing to risk more, making the racing much more crazy

i’ve only done a few. i’ve never ridden away and “crushed it” on any of them so i don’t have a favorite, yet. my least favorite is col de croix de fer. i think thats an hc?

depends on the race, I think
and the direction. Pretty sure I’ve seen Croix de Fer as both cat 1 and hc.

of course I miss the mitten! I’m in Girona, Spain at the moment. my new home away from home away from home. digging it so far.

ugh. a little wrecked! not bad considering though. quite a few bumps and bruises from hitting the deck. its interesting how my legs are the last thing on my mind, where as any other time I raced 250 km (if it that was only a chunk of the 300 km), my toasted legs would be all that was on my mind.

good question… i think through a season or even through a race you really begin to bond with your team mates. maybe that connection is not there for the first race but it develops fast. there’s also the factor of being a “pro” and doing your job, always givin your all.

Riders speaking up
You said above that you’d like to hear more guys from the top of the peloton speak up on rider safety issues. Why do you think they don’t? Would a real riders union help, in your opinion?
yea, something has to be done. its not my place to really say as I’ve only just recently reached this level. but the riders generally do NOT seem to be unified. It usually seems to be an issue of guys only really caring if the majority has been harmed by the condition or circumstance.
its a pretty cut-throat “dog eat dog” sport.

role in the peloton, are there any noticable perks for you, compared to previous years? Technical stuff you can talk about? Better nutrition, training, clothes, toys?
we are well taken care of. yes, we do benefit from this type of thing at times. for example…..
Cadel brought his “physio-therepist/chiro” guy onto the team with him. he was at tirreno with us and really helped my body work through some tough patches I had there.

question
do you sell shirts, or have anything you’d like to push today (website, charity…)?
"Ants don’t worry, they operate like a fantastic team, they accept obstacles and deal with them in a positive manner, they don’t complain and remain positive. An ant doesn’t work on emotion, is proactive and always chooses the ant role."

blogs are always a good idea
as are shirts – cheap enough to buy on a whim, and they last forever.

Brent, what gets you motivated to ride every day for several hours, and has that changed over the years?
Did clubs/coaches help with some external motivation back in the day? How often is it just a job nowadays?
it has turned into more of a job. i was super blessed with really good mentors, coaches and guidance when i was a young michigan kid just starting to ride. these people still play a large role in motivating me. its nice to feel the continued love of them.

Who’s going to be the first person to volunteer to send Brent and me some Peanut Butter & Co’s finest products? Cause PB is heavily lacking in Europe – especially maple infused goodness.

Typical Spain
fourteen sorts of EPO, a dozen different brands of testosterone, blood bags for sale in your corner shop, but no peanut butter. Are you looking forward to Valverde finally getting busted?
lol
but i’m not sure this is the forum for doping talk.

Thanks Brent for sharing your time with us!
Have to run to class now, but look forward to reading the rest later. Good luck in the races ahead. :)

How did you enjoy your time on the US Nat'l Team?
I remember seeing you guys at Tour de Georgia. Did you feel like you got some serious development work in there?

the natty team was awesome. it really did a lot to show us what it was like to live as pro bike racers and survive the racing and lifestyle in europe. Noel D. taught me a lot.

Dutch! You mean Dutch!
Flemish is just a dialect, bah. (Don’t tell that to a Fleming or you’ll have a heated argument on your hands). Kroon is Dutch.
So NEVER
say that to Tommeke? Ooops I did say to the QS staff “my brother in-law said that Flemish is just sloppy Dutch”, they laughed and agreed.
Ah well,
I guess most are pretty relaxed about it. The official language of Flanders is called Dutch. There are some distinct differences between general (“northern”) Dutch, Belgian Dutch and Surinamese Dutch, though.
Wow. I had no idea that the Flemish for chipknip was proto map.
(It’s a very funny experience, reading the page of differences Google-translated into English.)

Jerome Pineau was quoted a couple of weeks ago, discussing his move to Quickstep
All Belgians understand French. It’s just that sometimes they need a little push.
Oh that's funny!
Probably because the French don’t understand Dutch! The Belgian’s seem to be more bilingual.
Hey man. Your old pal Lampshade wanted to give you a shout. Glad to see you survived San Remo. Keep it up, we are rooting you on back in the States.
