Gent-Wevelgem .........LIVE
Welcome to the new and improved Gent-Wevelgem, now available for your viewing pleasure on a Sunday. It used to be uncomfortably caught between a rock and a hard flemish place but could now be a major target for the biggest riders in it's own right. "Zien" as Van Gavia always says.
Live video at 14:30 CEST (08:30 AM US eastern, 23:30 AEDT)
Look for links at cyclingfans, steephill, Myp2p, and BVLS. In the meantime, here's a live ticker to tide you over.

Evening all
Is this where we come to discuss geology and literature? Or perhaps we could just talk about how friggin’ awesome Tony is :-). Yeah, let’s talk about His Fabulous Swissness… I hear he won a race the other day…
And where were you? It was very quiet without you...

Where was I... when?
Oh – last night? Trying to sleep. Got about 6hrs in the end, so I’m calling it a victory :-)
Reading Chris Anker Sörensen's book this morning
which is a Tourdiary from 2009 basically. Lots of good Fabian stories.
Oooh!
… and you’ll be translating and posting excerpts here for us?!
Please Jens... take a leaf out of Yeehoo's book..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Time permitting
some surprising observations on riders in there. Relevant today on Juan Antonio Flecha:
“He’s really a (fool/idiot) in the peloton. He can actually be really nice personally but in the field he’s really annoying.Pushing at weird moments. Squeezing into the rotation when we are sitting a few guys riding tempo. That kind of thing……………And Flecha isn’t very nice in the peloton. That’s why he’s become so unpopular.”
Interesting...CAS may not end up being well loved in the peloton either...
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Eh, he is just telling it how it is. Not everybody is nice about their work

True... telling tales in public while you're still riding is not great form..
That said, I’d love to read it. And I don’t think ‘telling it like it is’ is always a good idea… or kind.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
The thing is
the book is based on voicerecorded diary entries made by CAS in his debut TdF. A lot of it is “feelings in the moment” stuff. Obviously edited but often it reflects the cranky and fatigued state of a rider in a GT. And CAS is basically deep in the hurtbox by stage 2 or 3 and it shines through. None of it is the stuff of scandals though.
Gotcha...yeah, saying somebody is annoying in the peloton isn't a scandal
especially when you say he has a lovely personality off the bike

I think this is philosophical... and that said, i'd read it.
I do however believe that it is unwise to dis. the people with whom you have to work. I think CAS got bad advice, but I’m sure his bank account says otherwise.

Jens had only a 4 hour difference between Central European time and U.S. eastern. It changed to 5 for a week or 2 because of daylight savings but now Europe is on daylight savings so it goes back to 6 hours. At least that is what cyclingfans said about the daylight savings being today

10 km less!
For reasons still unknown, the commissaires decided to shorten the race course by 10 km. Official start was given in Tielt. I guess that means they did ride the whole course but only the official start was moved a little further. Result: 210 km of racing. Way, way longer than last year’s 209 …

Chris's tweet
Cf: odd start, peloton leaves 7’ early. Boonen, Cancellara, Weylandt and others back in the cars, chasing. Is this normal?
early? that's odd.
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
That could be the reason
They thought everybody was there, start given too early, turns out NOT everybody was there after all, extra 10 km of neutral zone to let them all come back.
but why would you start a race early?
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
If a car with the likes of Cance is chasing, it's debatable that everyone was there and ready to go..

nah, in a professional event timeschedules are meant to be kept

Sure
Maybe they expected a headwind and started early because they wanted to keep to the time schedule! In any case, Chris said it started early so I guess that is not in dispute.

He mentions Kevin Van Impe, who is like a third tier guy in the squad and he’s basically threatening him with unemployment if he doesn’t produce results when he’s a guy who never gets to ride for himself anyway?

Though it is more of a case of when you work hard
but your expected to do more and physically can’t. Van Impe has his own decent results, Dwars Door in ‘09, and he lays down for Boonen in every classic. Most of those guys would see it as job security because they don’t want to have to go back down to the pro-conti/conti level and have their wages cut in half

When your in an environment that has a big grey area for doping then it is different
When your managers and what not tell you that you need to be professional, you usually will do what your told because you don’t want to screw up the sweet gig you have. The rider is still at fault but if he is nurtured in an environment where doping isn’t seen as something that is taboo then his opinions will be very different but the people who are might be telling him to take whatever need to be help responsible

Hi guys
Here’s the deal with the early start. I was talking to Farrar and some riders were rolling down the ramp to teh start area when people started yelling ALLEZ ALLEZ and suddenly things were moving out. A few straggling riders jetted off to the back, but Boonen and Cancellara were still up on stage, anda few other guys were leaning on their team cars in a narrow chute. The cars started off before Boonen rolled down, so he was picking his way through to catch up. Cancellara was a good 20" later — I was on the ramp thinking Boonen was last, but I saw Tony come flying down, pinned myself to the rail, and he was off. About a minute late. I presume they rode slowly, because that was fucking nuts.

p.s. nice and chilly today
and a steady wind. No cloudbreaks as far as I can see. It was sprinkling in Harelbeke on the way from Deinze. I am in Wevelgem now, in the press center. They have two set up, one for Nederlands and one for all other languages. The former is a big room with food and a huge screen. The latter is an empty college classroom with a TV on. I am in the former.

You are like a little bomb (didn’t know how to make that rhyme in English)
The whole race be wise
At the line you wins the prize (yes it has a spelling error in Dutch, too)
see what I mean?
the bomb thing is a coded warning to the Tom Boonen club. Those Tom Boonen! club people don’t mess around.

He was at Rabo U23 last year. I’m starting to detect a pattern here Flecha, Bos, Kreder
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
