Gent-Wevelgem .........LIVE

Vuelta-live_medium

Welcome to the new and improved Gent-Wevelgem, now available for your viewing pleasure on a Sunday. It used to be uncomfortably caught between a rock and a hard flemish place but could now be a major target for the biggest riders in it's own right. "Zien" as Van Gavia always says.

Live video at 14:30 CEST (08:30 AM US eastern, 23:30 AEDT)

Look for links at cyclingfanssteephillMyp2p, and BVLS. In the meantime, here's a live ticker to tide you over.

Evening all

Is this where we come to discuss geology and literature? Or perhaps we could just talk about how friggin’ awesome Tony is :-). Yeah, let’s talk about His Fabulous Swissness… I hear he won a race the other day…

Reading Chris Anker Sörensen's book this morning

Time permitting

some surprising observations on riders in there. Relevant today on Juan Antonio Flecha:

“He’s really a (fool/idiot) in the peloton. He can actually be really nice personally but in the field he’s really annoying.Pushing at weird moments. Squeezing into the rotation when we are sitting a few guys riding tempo. That kind of thing……………And Flecha isn’t very nice in the peloton. That’s why he’s become so unpopular.”

by Jens on Mar 28, 2010 5:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Interesting...CAS may not end up being well loved in the peloton either...

True... telling tales in public while you're still riding is not great form..

That said, I’d love to read it. And I don’t think ‘telling it like it is’ is always a good idea… or kind.

The thing is

the book is based on voicerecorded diary entries made by CAS in his debut TdF. A lot of it is “feelings in the moment” stuff. Obviously edited but often it reflects the cranky and fatigued state of a rider in a GT. And CAS is basically deep in the hurtbox by stage 2 or 3 and it shines through. None of it is the stuff of scandals though.

by Jens on Mar 28, 2010 5:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Gotcha...yeah, saying somebody is annoying in the peloton isn't a scandal

Jens had only a 4 hour difference between Central European time and U.S. eastern. It changed to 5 for a week or 2 because of daylight savings but now Europe is on daylight savings so it goes back to 6 hours. At least that is what cyclingfans said about the daylight savings being today

10 km less!

For reasons still unknown, the commissaires decided to shorten the race course by 10 km. Official start was given in Tielt. I guess that means they did ride the whole course but only the official start was moved a little further. Result: 210 km of racing. Way, way longer than last year’s 209 …

but your expected to do more and physically can’t. Van Impe has his own decent results, Dwars Door in ‘09, and he lays down for Boonen in every classic. When your in an environment that has a big grey area for doping then it is different

When your managers and what not tell you that you need to be professional, you usually will do what your told because you don’t want to screw up the sweet gig you have. The rider is still at fault but if he is nurtured in an environment where doping isn’t seen as something that is taboo then his opinions will be very different but the people who are might be telling him to take whatever need to be help responsible

Hi guys

Here’s the deal with the early start. I was talking to Farrar and some riders were rolling down the ramp to teh start area when people started yelling ALLEZ ALLEZ and suddenly things were moving out. A few straggling riders jetted off to the back, but Boonen and Cancellara were still up on stage, anda few other guys were leaning on their team cars in a narrow chute. The cars started off before Boonen rolled down, so he was picking his way through to catch up. Cancellara was a good 20" later — I was on the ramp thinking Boonen was last, but I saw Tony come flying down, pinned myself to the rail, and he was off. About a minute late. I presume they rode slowly, because that was fucking nuts.
