Live Chat Wednesday with Dominique Rollin! That's Today!

Dominique RollinYou're invited!

This Wednesday, 31 March, we will have a live chat with Dominique Rollin of Cervélo TestTeam. Yay! The chat will take place at 7pm European time, which is 10am PDT, 1pm EDT. (Phew, math is hard.) Come on by and join the fun!

Not familiar with Dominique Rollin? He's from Québec, and he loves cobbles. Rollin is racing his second season with Cervélo after a successful 2008 season with Toyota-United here in the United States. His big win came during stage 4 of the 2008 Tour of California, in which Rollin rode away solo on a wet, windy day on the Central Coast. Remember that one? It was the stage down Highway 1, headwinds all the way, seven hours of racing. Crazy day, really. Little wonder that Rollin has turned out to be a rider for the Northern Classics.

Last season he finished third at the Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen and fifth at the Ronde van Drenthe. After a succesful spring, the Québecois missed a big chunk of last season to illness. This season, he's looking for his first pro win in Europe and hoping to ride well at the World Championship in Melbourne. Check out Rollin's Facebook page for more infos. Or, prep with this interview from Lyne at Podium Insight.

As always, if you are not currently a member of the Cafe, you'll need a username to join the chat. Head over to our registration page, and get yourself signed up. You will need a valid email address to register. We promise we won't do anything nefarious with your email address.

Look forward to seeing everyone here on Wednesday!

Like for sure, no way

I had exactly that thought this morning – I wish I was better at coming up with semi-interesting questions – when a team media rep emailed me this morning about an interview for this week.

"Are you afraid of cows?"

That question made a Swedish man famous. In the 80s.

Brutal day at AToC '08

I spent the whole day in the freezing rain w/ that breakaway.
35-45 degrees, longest stage of the race 135mi, and brutally gusty headwinds all day.
the body count was high, a dozen into the cars or ambulances w/ hypothermia.
Dom was in his element.
He did more than his share of the work too, while the break numbered 12-15 guys.
He wasn’t wearing much, maybe some gloves and armwarmers. Tough
One by one they fell off his wheel. Hincapie chased w/ another guy for the last 15k and Dom increased his gap over some nasty finishing hills.

I was frozen solid.

Central Cali

The weather gets crazy there, not ezactly palm trees and movie starz up that way. Those storms just slammed into the coast. That was a gnarly day of racing.

by Jen See on Mar 29, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Those of you not from California

who think it’s all “Baywatch” and “CHiPs” episodes out here, and who have not visited San Francisco on vacation in the “summer” and who now own a $15 fleece jacket with “Alcatraz” printed on it, that day was an example of the nastiness that winter in Northern/Central California can be. 135 miles with the vast Pacific ocean on their right, absolutely no shelter, while getting pounded by winter rain and wind the entire time. Seriously hard core. Dom is etched into my memory for that day alone. I’m sure it helped that the guy is the size of a moose (in a fit cyclist sense). Looking forward to this one.

Well, he is from Québec.

by MathieuG on Mar 29, 2010 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

That was an epic stage.

And it’s why I have mixed feelings about the ToC moving to May. Seemed like it was on its way to acquiring a reputaton for really appalling conditions (remember the stage to Santa Rosa where the weather knocked out the race radios?), which would have been an interesting identity for a California race. “The Hell of the Pacific,” something like that.

But I imagine very few of the guys who actually ride the race are sorry about the move.

by Jen See on Mar 30, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

But,

now that we have the tour of Oman do you think that is why they changed the date? hmmm

by cyclingdiva on Mar 30, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

They changed the date

because the organizers wanted better weather and they wanted to be able to use higher elevation climbs. You really can’t go to Big Bear in February – at least, not for a road race ;-)

by cyclingdiva on Mar 30, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

…because the ASO told them to change the date. Nothing more than that. The move has effectively “stolen” a bunch of talented riders from participating in the Giro d’Italia.

Coolio

I saw Dom take a sprint win next door in Walterboro, SC as part of the USA crit series a few years ago. Massively powerful looking rider he is. I could have taken him at the finish, but the rest of my team pulled out of the race and was under the tent drinking beer when I came by suffering like a dog to hang on so I pulled out a couple laps later to have a cold one myself and watch the finish.

I don’t know who is on the front driving those frigging races, but we were doing 40+ on the long backstretch every lap. Pancake flat course w/ no wind. And guys attack off the front… how? Anyway, it is so cool to see him in a Cervelo kit riding, not only with the big boys, but as one of them.

As much as my eyes are vomiting by looking at that...

I LOVED the team bike that they have; the green, yellow and red Merckx. I have jonesing for one really bad and have wanted to get one since then. I still think it was an awesome bike.

Another side note is that he was on the VC Roubaix amateur team back in the day that Cyrille Giumard had a hand in so there was talent there the whole time.

Is that the Merckx?

Or is it the Kuota?

I only checked because I remembered they rode Serottas for a while…then I forgot about the Kuotas.

John Murphy was another big guy I was glad to see move up.

(And I’m sure alot more 1/2’s were glad to see him go) It’s cool to see guys like that come race in your neighborhood so you can say: “Wonder when he’ll get picked up?”

I thought that thing was so cool when I was 16 and I still do but there is a much more diminished chance that I will be able to get my hands on one. Also notice the first generation SRAM when FORCE was the top level

That's what I'm saying...

And I really put that one up so Drew could mull over the wattage that Dom must have put out to punch it up that incline for the win.

Without meaning to offend Ted King, winning overrides style.

If you have to modify "hockey"

with any adjective, then it’s not real hockey.

This applies to “field” hockey, “floor” hockey, “Roller” hockey, etc.

There is only one hockey, and its played on ice.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
