Live Chat with Dominique Rollin of Cervélo TestTeam

Welcome!
Come on in and join the party! Dominique Rollin will be here on the site for the next hour. He'll try to answer as many of your questions as possible. If he doesn't get to your question, don't be sad. You can always catch up with Dominique on Facebook for more fun and games.
During the chat, please try to pace your questions. You would not want to go out too hard and get dropped in the finale. If you see lots of unanswered questions on the screen, sit back, relax, and wait for Dominique to catch up. Because, it's the nice thing to do. Regulars, remember to hit the rec button on Dominique's replies so that they get that special springlike green glow. If you're having trouble with the thread updating as it grows, refresh the page and it should run more smoothly.
First-timers, welcome! If you'd like to join the convo, head over to the SBN sign-up page and get yourself a username. You will need a valid email address - be sure to watch for the email from SBN which will complete the reg process. Sometimes it goes to Spam. Bad spam! We promise not to sell your address or heckle you in any way. At least, not over email.
Thanks to Dominique Rollin for coming! Enjoy!

The next few weeks
Hey Dom, thanks for coming on.
So what do the next few weeks hold for you training wise now that you’ve got the nod for Flanders and Roubaix? Thats got to be super exciting, your first chance at both of those races.
Scary
Just like being at the start of MSR I’m a bit scared. But it should all go well, fitness is there. But a firt is a first.
Training whise, well if you’ve seen what happened in 3 days de panne today you know what the weather is like at the moment here. Typical Belgium, close to Kuurne weather. So the riding is stay away from the rain and dry, managed it for 130k today. Tomorrow we’ve got the pre-Ronde ride… we’ll ride the last 160k of sunday’s race.
Samething on the program next thursday for Roubaix, and Schelde Prijs on Wednesday shall do it for the intensity.
most of the other days it’s coffee shop rides and fun on the bike

As an aside
near the end of the Toyota-United season in 2008, you showed up as the only TU guy (with zero support) and still snagged second at the CSC Invitational. At the risk of sounding like too much of a fanboy, that was completely badass.
Hotels
Going from nice comfortable hotel rooms in the US to well almost prion size bedroom where you have to go in the hall to open your suit case.
Blague apart….
not much actually, Toyota was well run and mostly professional. The support we get keeps growing and for a second year we keep seeing improvements in the staff and work around us.

Wigglypuff Cav Crunch, Breakfast of Madison Champions!
The circuit
I’d have to say the circuit, lot’s of races were fun like CAscade, REdlands, crits like CSC invitational and long races like Philly, Univest. But what I like is the friendly fun ambiance at the race, you don’t feel like your working.
Here’s it’s hard work. You feel bad one day, well it’s going to be a nightmare… Paris-Nice for me was the exemple… suffered every day just because I had a cold the week before and didn’t sleep well… took me 1300k to get better… at least got better by the end of it… but I did suffer alot to keep up

Hi there
About Kuurne-Brussles-Kuurne, would you agree with Kenny Van Hummel’s analysis of the race, which basically was it was the worst race ever, but fun?
A:
well, I’ve seen worst in 2008. Cali wasn’t worst weather 4-5 degrees warmer. But was 7h long.
And my last race in 08 I’ve seen the worst, at Tour of Southland in NZ, 2 stage in one day, first stage it hailed on us for more then 2h and in the pm they had to take 30k out of the stage because the cars couldn’T stay on the road due to high wind conditions

Ooh! I remember that Cali stage!
It was hard to even watch. And our man here won it with a great attack.
There was a stage in the Giro a couple of years back
when all the riders had to hide under cars for ten minutes or so for protection from a storm of golf ball sized hailstones. A bit later they all rode into a tunnel and didn’t come out again for half an hour or so.
Suisse, wasn't it?

Giro 2007 Stage 16
As CN put it:
A few raindrops were falling and the riders were cold and tired and not in the mood for racing, so the pace was slow, very slow. 25.1 kilometres were covered in the first hour, with the second hour even slower at 24.6 kilometres as the gruppo freddo compatto scaled Campolongo with a few snowflakes falling for entertainment. The only action was the sprint for the GPM atop the 1875m Campolongo, where Panaria’s Lucky Baliani took the points from stage 13’s hero Le Boulanger and Maglia Verde Piepoli.
It took the gruppo another hour to descend down from Campolongo to Brunico after 84 kilometres, which included a stop in a tunnel for 10 minutes for the gruppo to put on more warm clothing. The rain had increased as the race headed east and the pace increased slightly. The average speed after three hours was now up to 28.9km/h, still decidedly a touristic pace. As the gruppo compatto approached the feed-zone in Dobbiaco, the rain tapered off, the roads began to dry and the rain jackets came off.
The TdS stage was also 2007
Who upset the hail gods that year?
Story at CN—love this from Frohlinger:
"I’ve never experienced anything like that, we were bombarded with fist-sized hailstones. Over the radio came, “The race is being stopped, please find shelter.” That was no problem for the peloton, they were in a village and could go into garages and sheds. But those of us in the escape group had more of a problem. I crawled into a hedge, and felt rather like an animal in the forest. Marcus Burghardt found shelter in a [presumably empty] dog house. Looking back, we can laugh about it, but it wasn’t funny at the time."

Question
With you and the Canadian guys in Garmin starting to make a mark in the Protour, do you think that Canadian cycling is developing, or is just a coincidence that there are more top riders at the moment?
Question re Startlist changes
Cervelo has lost a number of classics riders this spring (Haussler, Klier). Does this change your role on the team for these races?
"Today I was honked at...I caught up and made a great honking noise back...he caught up and said I'm gonna punch you in the face...I laughed."
~DZ
QUESTION
is the team relieved at getting a Tour invite or was there never much doubt?
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
Dominique, have you ever done any power tests in the lab?
Like, 1 minute, or 6 minutes, or 20 minute tests? … How’d you do? Did it work out as you expected?
(This question from Drew because he couldn’t be here with us today. Sadly.)
there was an article a while back
about Dom power testing in philly. can’t remember if they gave numbers though.
"Ants don’t worry, they operate like a fantastic team, they accept obstacles and deal with them in a positive manner, they don’t complain and remain positive. An ant doesn’t work on emotion, is proactive and always chooses the ant role."

Is Drew the one posing as riders in these chats?

Question regarding "scary" starts.
WIth Flanders and Roubaix coming up, does one create more fear and excitement than the other?
"It's a lovely thing, feeling that momentum. If you're lucky, it's also about grace." Tim Winton
A:
I try not to think about it
Both are 2 hard and so different races that I just can’t really compare them
One got hard climbs and ruff technical roads where positioning is a key, imagine yourself figthing 200 guys on the bike path to make it up a 1k climb in cubbles steeper then what you can imagine, and that after 180k
The other had the hardest most destroyed cobbles possible… if you make it out of the section you know how to ride a bike….
So both are scary but so atractive to me…
I must be wear to look forward to that pain
by DRollin on Mar 31, 2010 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions 24 recs
Good kind of weird!
It seems like the positioning battles before the cobbles – the climbs in Flanders and the secteurs at Paris-Roubaix – are as hard as the cobbles.
The peloton always looks so smooth on TV
but riders invariably talk about the insane battles for position on small roads.
That's the part of GH's movie I love.
When he answers critics about his aggressiveness. “You don’t ride in teh front or make the final selection without being agressive” (paraphrased)
"It's a lovely thing, feeling that momentum. If you're lucky, it's also about grace." Tim Winton
I always watch the parts before the climbs
and the big “obstacles” Best parts of the races, really. A lot of times, it’s decided right there.
PAUSE QUESTIONS
Dominique had a brief trouble with the interwebs. Stoopid interwebs. But he’s back now and catching up with the questions.

This is a joke...
shave or wax? Field hockey vs ice hockey? like a bunch of hopped up teens! Can’t imagine he thought much of this…
"If me and King Kong went into an alley, only one of us would come out. And it wouldn't be the monkey."
"I don't really trust a sane person."
"I never met a man I didn't want to fight." The one and only Lyle Alzado
I think it's a joke
to value his assessment of this (us? you by extension?! oh no!!) higher than the event itself. Was all just genuine fan banter. Next time you better make it to the party in time to ask all the right questions in order to have Your Hero think highly of you. And maybe, if we’re lucky, us.
Don't worry...I was there yesterday...
and I won’t apologize for my impressions. Don’t take criticism to well here I see. And for the hero stuff…no cyclist is my hero…and I wouldn’t ask questions to make him think highly of me…just more educated questions rather than shave or wax…
Anyway, your attitude toward my comment is all I need…if this is genuine fan banter I will not try to participate next time.
One last thought…maybe in the future questions could be forwarded to the host first…so that the questions could be asked in a more controlled manner…this is actually an honest suggestion.

serious interviews
can be found all over the web. criticism is taken like it’s handed out, usually. calling people a bunch of hopped up teens sounds more like an insult than criticism to me. you could have gotten your point across without it. this is a fan site, not l’equipe. “can’t imagine he thought much of this” unless he lied in his last comment, he looks like he had fun.

It's just fucking cycling, man
It don’t mean nothing. All we are here for on this chunk of mud is to have some fun.
Oh hell no
serious interviews can be done by journalists, did you not see where Rollin himself said he didn’t answer some questions because he always gets asked them by journalists? I’m sure he enjoyed some different questions, to understand the shaving and hockey things you would have to be a regular around here. Maybe he didn’t quite get it but don’t go asking people who make this place to change because a pro is around. If you were here and wanted serious questions asked then ask them, we are not your fucking guinea pigs.
“If this genuine fan banter”. The hell do you expect from a blog site for the fans?

Seems rather odd in one comment
Rather odd indeed
It’s a lovely blend of definitions of irony and hypocrisy I think.

Yes, we did consider pre-submitted questions
but we decided to stick with the more spontaneous format instead. Yes, it does mean the discussion can turn chaotic, but it also means that people can ask what they want. If you want to ask “more educated” questions, show up and ask them. I’m not going to stop you. But I’m also not going to stop people from asking whatever “fan banter” questions they want to ask either. This is a chance for the people on the site to interact with a rider from the pro ranks. It’s up to them to decide how that interaction goes.
Every chat is different – it depends a lot on the guest, and what questions he (or she) chooses to answer, and who shows up to ask questions.
It is what it is.
Whew...
Glad I didn’t ask him what he thought of the Twilight series, cause that would have been like totally lame
bloody great
My view:
PdC: Ain’t perfect but;
1. 20 or 30 VERY knowledgeable pro racing fans
2. A welcoming environment for the less knowledgeable (like me)
3. People who like cycling with a sense of humour
4. An intolerance for only one thing: the rude people.
