VDS: Weekend Smack Talk! Who ya got for Eroica and P-N?
Okay, 5 stages into Langkawi, and so far not a single VDS point has snuck through--and only 4 teams have the winner of the first stage of Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen.* But this weekend will be different. On Saturday, a strong field will battle it out on the white roads of Montepaschi Strade Bianche Eroica Tuscana. Then, on Sunday, Paris-Nice kicks off with an 8-km prologue. Points are up for grabs!
So...time to talk smack, and don't hold back. Sandbagging also welcome. Pull up a chair, pour your favorite beverage, and tell the Cafe all about your team for this weekend's races.
*There's also a minor stage race going on somewhere on the Iberian Peninsula, I understand. Whatever.

Boom, Mollema, B Feillu
handful of sprinters. Meh. Maybe Nibali for MPSB. Things get big for me starting next Wednesday though.

Team Barbie Barbie
For Eroica: Thomas Lofkvist, Tyler Farrar, Johan Vansummeren, Robbie McEwen, and youngsters Rasmus Guldhammer and Tejay Van Garderen. Defending champion Lofkvist, will, despite his sandbagging in the press, make it two in a row. Farrar, ably supported by Summi, will make the podium, and one of the young ’uns will surprise everyone with a top ten finish, while Robbie—wait, why is Robbie here again?
For Paris-Nice: Barbie, of course, who won a stage here last year, Dominique Rollin, Samuel Dumoulin, Sylvain Chavanel, Wouter Weylandt, Lars Boom, Hayden Roulston, and Gert Steegmans. Okay, maybe a tad light on the GC guys, but you can hardly better this roster for stage-hunting. Or can you???
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
I am packed for this weekend
Eroica: Farrar, Fischer, Nibali, Velits and Tony
PN: Roche, Pereiro, Sicard, Vande Velde, Sagan, Mollema, BOOM, Horner, Popo and last but not least Gerro.
"Racing bikes is for the kids, the rest of us just want to feel like kids on our bikes" - Flying Dog
Sicard is not in PN
That’s what I read somewhere.
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
Good news! I have him too.

I was hoping we could postpone your disappointment
but alas
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
Does that mean he's not riding?

Hesjdahl for Strade Bianchi
Have to go with the local Vancouver Island boy.
I'd rather be riding
In the web search you inspired for
the Canadian cyclist from New Brunswick (that would be Christian Meier), I was reminded of my favorite ever attack by a Canadian cyclist:

Lets see
P-N: Contador, Lulu, Guitterez, Van Den Broeck, Mollema, Boom, Haedo
MPSB: Ginnani, Farrar, Hesjedal, Maaskant, Vansummeren, Guldhammer, both Velits’
Me and majope: almost perfectly complementary.
Who's They?
"Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs."
Not that confident
MPSB: Michael Barry, all the way. I think he, Farrar, and Brent Brookwater are about the only guys I have there…
P-N: In a word, Hoogerland. Van Den Broeck is going well this year already. Matt Goss will do nothing because Griepel’s there. I have Downing, Henderson, and Geraint Thomas from Sky at P-N. I think that Hendy may get a few points, hopefully Thomas will in the prologue too. And WIlliam Bonnet is going to pick up a few cheap points. Or so I hope.
Sidenote – why the hell is Kolobnev not doing MPSB? Dangit, Katusha, dangit. Kolobnev has a better chance for points in MPSB than P-N.
Oh, I have bubble boy too.
But I’m not hopeful, not til September.
by Douglas Ansel on Mar 5, 2010 9:15 PM EST up reply actions
Hmm.
For MPSB I have Evans, Ginanni, Scarpone, Van Garderen, and (?) Santambrogio (I see different versions as to whether he’s riding or not.)
Then for P-N I have pretty much the whole rest of my team—Greipel, Lulu, Kolobnev, Rodriguez, Taaramae, Horner, Machado, Chicchi, Dumoulin, Pauriol, Perget, Pereiro, and (?) Sicard.
If that doesn’t snare me a few points I’m in deep trouble.
Cycling will always be a beautiful sport no matter how many people disgrace it.--Christian Vande Velde
Love my Stade team, really like my P-N team
Love my Strade Bianche team, and am predicting a sweep of podium plus more:
1. Pippo
2. Cancellara
3. Hesjedal
8. Nibali
14. Van Garderen
15. Marco Bandiera
Pack Fodder for Robbie McEwen
Good potential for Paris-Nice: Dumoulin, Bubble Boy, Steven Cummings, Tiago Machado, Levi, Jurgen Van Den Broeck, Serge Pauwels. Hoping for a podium for Levi, top 10s for Jurgen and Tiago, stage win for Pauwels and a top three stage for Dumoulin.
My racers seem to be taking a....excruciatingly slow, snail like pace to starting this season and
they better pick up the damn slack, otherwise they are going to have an irate VDS screaming at them through the keyboard. Now, on to this weekend…
For the Eroica: Van Avermaet, Vincenzo Nibali (who better place well), Van Garderen and Ginanni. Please, I just want a few points guys.
For P-N: Sicard (who I hope starts because he was having left calf troubles), Krueziger, Roelandts, Seeldraeyers, Boom!, Alexandre Geniez and Tony Martin.
SO…P-N is looking good for my boys with a possible TT win for Martin or Boom and high GC placings for Kreuz and Seeldraeyers with the others looking for a stage. Tony could be able to climb decently depending on his form.
loaded for bear in eroica

Bah the rest of your guys. I mean, not personally—it’s just the VDS talking.

I'd tell you who I have
but I still have no clue of who’s on my team and am too lazy to check, well I can tell you Bert and the Glorious one for P-N.
March 14, 2010: The great one returns!
Team Edvald in the Sky:
For MPSB: Hesjadal (he’s alone!)
For Paris Nice: Valjavec, Navarro, Rolland, Trofimov, Rollin, Dumoulin, Koldo Fernandez, Meier, Van den Broeck, Boom (that should be interesting)

Le Lay
Casper
Brice Feillu
Le Mével
Champion
Dumoulin
Moinard
Mollema
Bouet
Geniez
Hupond
Pauriol
Rolland
Sicard
Hoping for GC win, 2 other GC top 10 and at least 2 stage wins… We’ll see !
For Eroica, not so much: no Nibali, no Gesink, no Deignan, no Chicchi => nobody :)
I have good numbers at least...
MSB : Löfkvist, Vansummeren, Spilak, Nibali, Matt Lloyd, Van Avermaet and Breschel
P-N: F Schleck, CAS, Craig Lewis, Mollema, Posthuma,Vande Velde, Kessiakoff, Dan Martin, Rolland and Henderson
I think I have some options here
which is good, since I’m currently languishing in =334th place (Hi Lou!)
10 in PN: F. Schleck, Vandevelde, Valjavec, Rollin, Trofimov, Koldo Fernandez, Sicard, Sagan, Seeldrayers, Hendo
7 in MPSB: Evans, Vansummeren, Spilak, Eisel, Guldhammer, O’Grady, Cooke
Surprise, surprise!
O’Grady, Cancellara, McEwen and Nibali for Eroica. Is Cav racing… not that I have him.
I have to do one race at a time because remembering who’s in my team for PN is more challenging, although I know I have Sagan, Sicard, Gerrans, Greipel, Dumoulin and Brice Feillu… now will double check :(
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
and Voeckleur and CA Sorenson...
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Fromagerie Duval: More than meh. Maybe.
Eroica: Hesjedal, Van Avermaet, Konovalovas.
P-N: Kreuzinger, Monfort, Le Mevel, Moinard, Roche, Koldo, Ladagnous, Trofimov, Pauriol, Rollin.
Resistance is futile
One word SB smack talk: GASPAROTTO!!!
With a little help from Nibali and Vlad Efimkin
PN is a horde:
Mollema, Boom, Leezer, Hoogerland, Marcato, Greipel, Weylandts, Pauriol, van den Broeck, Fuglsang
I’d say 3 stage victories and 4 in the top-10 is the least they can do for me.
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
Just wait and see
My team will dish out pain, epic pain.
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.

You can’t handle the smack!!!

Injuries starting to hurt my squadra already, but similar to most, PN is looking better than Eroica
Eroica: Evans, A Efimkin, Basseyev
PN: J VDB, F Schleck, Lulu, Haussler, Henderson, Chicchi, JJ Haedo, Dumoulin, Gustov, Trofimov, Sagan.
Gotta be a few points in that mix!
[/lurk] Is Nibali racing the Strade Bianchi?
I don’t see his name on the start list. But maybe I am looking at out-dated ones.
These are my players:
MSB- Breschel, Nibali(?), Maaskant, Van Summeren, B. Cooke, Guldhammer, Santambrogio
PN- Cunego, , J-rod,Van den Broeck, Steegmans, Mollema, J. Haedo, Sicard,
They will all have fun.
official start list includes Nibali..

Evans, Vansummeren, Hoste, Konovalovas for Strade Bianchi. Evans should do well
Cunego, Henderson, Chichi, Popovych, Dumoulin, Posthuma for Paris-Nice.
I think Evans might have a good shot at this. Unfortunately, he's not on my VDS team..

Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
I have 25 points already!
Thanks to the world’s 3rd best climber. 125 points by tomorrow, which is exactly 125 more than he scored last year.
man Cance was in the final 11 at eroica
and who gets the points for me is Rujano. Not that I am complaining. Bring 100 more home tomorrow Jos’e!!!

Ha! He's been very quiet so far, whoever he is.
No comments yet, joined up Feb. 25th, hasn’t logged into PdC since Feb. 27th. Maybe he’ll stop by to talk some smack one of these days.

I would hazard a guess that he's a Brit...
and Monty is one of their few smack talkers ;)
Based on my record, i’m probably wrong about all of this.

It was a compliment..
I’d say you really only go there with cricket;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Not that he really needs to...
He’s just smacking some smack at the moment.
I’m back out of the top 50.
Who've you got for Tirreno-Adriatico?
Most of mine seem to be doing the Paris-Nice, but I’ve got Evans, Scarponi, and Mattia Gavazzi at least (Maybe Jose Serpa and Alberto Loddo also).
Is there a complete start list out there somewhere?
From what I’ve seen so far (assuming they’re correct), I’ve got: McEwen, Farrar, Boasson Hagen, Lofkvist, and Gerdemann. Not a ton of riders, but 2 of them were in last year’s final top 10 and another won a stage. So, with luck we’ll do well.
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
Haven't seen a complete startlist.
It’s annoying. Samuel Sanchez is listed, but he’s pretty much riding the Paris-Nice. Also Scarponi’s just been mentioned in the P-N preview here, but he’s riding the T-A. Ugh. Don’t know when they’ll put one up, it starts on Wednesday.
UUUNNNGGGHHH!!!
PN Brigade: Purito, Barbie, Nicolas Roche, Pierrick Fedrigo, Xavier Tondo, Jimmy Casper, Franchesco Chicchi, Nikolas Maes and Lars Boom, !
Rodriguez could be in the top ten overall, optimistically Tondo could too. Could see Fedrigo, Roche, Chicchi, Casper, Boom or Barbie getting a stage win.
But this is probably also when I start paying for not having Bert.
Chin up.
At his increased price this year, Bert will have to earn about 622 more points than he did last year to match the same rate of return. Since he’s probably racing a similar schedule (all races that were counted last year, so no new chances to score), that’s going to be hard to do.
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
Unless he does the Vuelta
Would be cool, but not for my VDS team prospects…
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.
I'll believe it when I see it.
And I don’t believe we’ll see it unless he loses the Tour and feels the need to regain face.
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
OK, so I just looked at the start list and I have...
Bozic, Luis Sanchez, Contador, Brice Feillu, Duque, Popovych, JI Gutierrez, Sagan and Geraint Thomas.
I’m thinking Contador and Sanchez for the GC, Gutierrez and Thomas for the TT and Bozic for the sprints.
Almost half my team in PN
F Schleck, Greipel, Hoogerland, Roche, Trofimov, Gutierrez, Duque, Danielson, Sagan, Roelandts and Machado.
Eroica disappoiting with Breschel 12th and Pellizzotti 17th. At least Rabon delivered in Murcia.
Hmmm...
Boom, Chicchi*, B. Feillu, Greipel, Kreuziger, Sagan, Sicard and Taaramäe.
As for today’s racing, Wagner’s the only rider that I fired from my team. Glad that worked out for him. Anyway, I’ll have to remember to add Bertagnolli to my Christmas card list.
*Anyone else ever notice that Google translates Francesco Chicchi as Nick Swisher? Wtf. I’d never hire a Yankee…
I got crap for La Eroica!
And I got these guys for P-N: Dimitry Campion, Andriy Grivko, Yuriy Trofimov, Sandy Casar, Joaquin Rodrigues, Tony Martin, and Andre Greipel!
Rodrigues is my dark horse for the overall, as well as Martin. Greipel for the sprints and some Russians thrown in to make a breakaway stick!
Racing for Victory and Free Beer!
I love the smell of points in the morning.
So Eroica may have been a washout for me, but three first places today (Boom, Bos, Rabon) does rather salve that wound. It’s a pleasant surprise that I’m firmly in the top half of the table. Hope that continues.
Well...
the other way around wouldn’t be much better…
Gerrie Kneteman: If a football player falls he shouts for his mother, if a cyclist falls he yells for his bike.

That's a happy day!
Unfortunately I know this from experience. Me, up to 333rd out of 444 today. Hopefully Greipel will get me definitively into the third quartile tomorrow.

Whoo, top half (I think)
Disgruntled at Gert for crashing. Which one of you hopeful VDSers jinxed him by putting him on your team?
Oh wait, that’s me.
Murcia
Got me 310 points. Never would have guessed that I’d do well in a Spanish stage race and have Hunter, Rabon and Bos to thank for it.
"Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs."
Now sitting in the top 100
From these dizzying heights, there can be only one direction of travel.
I'm looking at the top of the leaderboard right now
and I’m seeing a lot of sad losers there. I pity these fools when the real races start. It’s going to be a rough awakening.
And my favorite team name so far is Jiggs’ “Lekke Band of Brothers”
Henderson! Top 100!
But my potential GC hopes finish 7 minutes down
