Just luck, most of the time.
I Google-Translated an article once that had both names in it, and remembered it because I thought it was funny.

i have trouble with the three P's: Pelizotti, Petaacchi and Pozzato...
I think it’s their mutual love of hair products that brings me undone..

Only Cunego, Horner and Valjavec are of any G.C. importance

might fancy a go at a stage later in the week, though?

but who knows, maybe hes priming for a Giro run this year.

Thought he'd said he'd finally given up on that & would ride for stage wins?
Unless of course he’s sandbagging (but to sandbag you surely have to be in a position to do so?). Or just trying to avoid a three weeks like the ones he had last May.

for his sake
he hope he has given up on GTs.

I think he has talked about that
but looking at the way he climbed at the vuelta last year, I don’t see any reason he can’t get top 10 or even top 5 at the Giro. He just shouldn’t be sacrificing chances at the classics on the idea that this might help him win another one
Noone here would begrudge him the win...
I felt mean spirited not putting him in my VDS team. As you say, ’Payback’s a bitch’…

Voigt isn't an exceptional well climber..
Hanging around at willpower.. Boom has more style when he climbs.. But at the end, with this sticking in his head see the 1sec sprints, I think Voigt can not get rid of Boom in the hills
ok we'll see,
probly both get dropped pretty badly. I say conta makes up enough time to finish ahead of both of them. But maybe not ahead of lulu.
Lulu
I’m thinking that Mende will be a big test for Lulu who has not shown in the past that he can keep up with Bert and the other real goats.
just a question of how much time conta can make up
I remember he was behind last year prior to de lure and made up all the time he needed. If caisse doesn’t gain more time, i’m thinking conta can make up 11 secs. Especially looking at those steep grades someone has just posted! 3 km at 10% – conta time.
Last year
Heading into de lure, Bert was 36 seconds down on Chavanel. Here was the top 10:
1 Sylvain Chavanel (Fra) Quick Step 18.32.56
2 Juan Manuel Garate (Spa) Rabobank 0.06
3 Juan Antonio Flecha (Spa) Rabobank 0.36
4 Alberto Contador (Spa) Astana
5 Kevin Seeldrayers (Bel) Quick Step 0.37
6 Luis-Leon Sanchez (Spa) Caisse d’Epargne 0.45
7 David Millar (GBr) Garmin – Slipstream 0.50
8 Antonio Colom (Spa) Team Katusha 0.55
9 Vladimir Karpets (Rus) Team Katusha 0.57
10 Jens Voigt (Ger) Team Saxo Bank 1.03
After de lure, Bert was 1st by …
1 Alberto Contador (Spa) Astana 23.21.08
2 Luis Leon Sanchez (Spa) Caisse d’Epargne 1.13
3 Sylvain Chavanel (Fra) Quick Step 1.24
4 Frank Schleck (Lux) Team Saxo Bank 1.38
5 Kevin Seeldrayers (Bel) Quick Step 2.01
6 Jens Voigt (Ger) Team Saxo Bank 2.06
7 Samuel Sanchez (Spa) Euskaltel – Euskadi 2.14
8 Jonathan Hivert (Fra) Skil-Shimano 2.29
9 Antonio Colom (Spa) Team Katusha 2.35
10 Yury Trofimov (Rus) BBox Bouygues Telecom 3.09
De lure was not quite 1000 feet in 14.5 miles. Longer but not as steep as Mende. SAs I recall, Lulu did a great job clawing back to Schleck. Jens! did a lot of early pulling then faded. Wonder how Saxo will work it this year?
11 seconds...gotta see how good Contador really is uphill in March
plus LL Sanchez is always in good form in spring and by the time August rolls around he is done.

Recent history
At Algarve Lulu couldn’t keep up. And last year on Ventoux’ little sister Lulu couldn’t keep up. But you never know. Last year on the last stage Lulu was able to use Saxo to keep him close enough.
this year it seems that he
worked less on the gym. Not sure if it will payout or make any difference. lets see.
I believe…hum…not.

This is the day where Boom is broken or not

Although LLS And Valverde are with 2.. Boom’s team/Rabo didn’t look that strong
I actually think the Col de Vance might be the biggest Boom-killer
Mende is short enough for someone with as much power as Boom to hang on with a little extra motivation.
Not sure he can hang on if the climbers decide to light it up on the Col de Vance.
ah,
but they’re climbing it from the other side, which is shorter and tougher. What you see there is how they’ll descent it.
You sure?
I had a look at the route description and it seemed to me like they were coming at it from the south side:
TOURRETTES-SUR-LOUP (1er passage sur la ligne) 48.0 172.0 16:12 16:26 16:41 VENCE (D.2210-D.2210a-D.2) 45.0 175.0 16:16 16:30 16:45 Col de VenceD.2 32.5 187.5 00:00 16:47 17:01 17:17 Carrefour D.2-D.3 19.0 201.0 17:00 17:14 17:30 Carrefour D.6-D.2210D.6 8.0 212.0 17:11 17:25 17:41 TOURRETTES-SUR-LOUPD.2210 0.0 220.0 17:22 17:37 17:53
yes they are
coming from the south side. Tourette, Vence, Col de Vence. Look up brahmafan (which is on the incorrect one) on a google map – you’ll see it’s on the other side – along the loup.
Thanks
I guess I didn’t bother to look up what was written on the profiles (or to read them at all) :(
Last year I did the same loop but with a sensible lunch stop in Coursegoules: http://www.bikemap.net/route/220159
Yeah
I’m not sure what’s up with the offcial site. They may be counting the climb from a different starting point – ie, somewhere further up the profile – or they may have the wrong stats. I couldn’t figure that out, actually.
But this is the right one. Alpes Maritimes is outside Nice. Grenoble, nowhere near it.
they go through tourette
to Vence, then col de vence, then down that profile you posted and back to tourette. There are some spots of higher grades in the real profile, but they’re not very long.
The last 10km of it, anyway
starting at Vence
definitely
TOURRETTES-SUR-LOUP (1er passage sur la ligne) 48.0 172.0 16:12 16:26 16:41
VENCE (D.2210-D.2210a-D.2) 45.0 175.0 16:16 16:30 16:45

Arrivée TOURRETTES-SUR-LOUPD.2210 0.0 220.0 17:22 17:37 17:53
cool!
thanks.
i ask, because i posted the other one in my preview at steephill. i was short on time and couldn’t sort out the road directions.
it's not easy -
had a hell of a time sorting out the last day and i live here. Still not 100% certain of the route towards the end.
Oh jeez
That’s what I just posted above … I thought the “vence2” profile was the south side because they talked about the Loup. But now I see this profile has “Vence” on it, so yeah, this is the one.
Sorry Gav!
Not totally sure
But the race goes through Vence, and so does this profile.
And the 10km after Vence fit the gradient given on the website
I don't really care
as long as there is audio to pick up all the swearing as they go through Tourrettes.
+1
except without the puns.

He climbed well enough in his Vuelta break
what I meant is that the times I’ve seen the Mende ridden, bigger power-guys did fairly well because it’s short enough.
I guess Boom wouldn't have won the prologue if he couldn't climb a bit
but looking at results from the 2005 tour all the guys up there were top climbers

No they didn't, nor did the Saxo boys..

and where the hell is Quick Step? Sorry just had to ask. You would think today would have been there day.
They only have Weylandt and chava here amongst the guys who thrive in the cross-wind...
they mostly finished in the pack though so it wasn’t too bad

Kevin
Seeldrayers we can’t expect much from this time. He had a heart scare during the off season. Soo he didn’t do much training. But, Chavanel and Barredo I would expect something.
I don't think Chava is in good enough shape to do what he did last year
and Seeldraeyers should still be able to go uphill decently. All 3 are around 1-1:15 min behind
by Vlaanderen90 on Mar 8, 2010 11:49 AM EST up reply actions
As much as I love Chava I can't see it.
Chavanel is too big of a name to let slip into a serious break.
Plus Caisse d’Epargne is showing serious interest in this race so they are one more full team committed to running down any break.
But the clincher to me is that he didn’t get into the break today and the remaining stages are all hillier. Not that he’s pants on hills but he’s going against the best on their territory and he just doesn’t have that quality.
Ideally he should be up by several seconds to a minute now if he is to seriously contest for the podium. Unfortunately he’s looking up at Lulu and VV, Bert and Levi, Kreuziger, Tondo, Samu, Sagan, Taaramae, etc. He can get by some of those dudes but all of them? Not a chance.
I hope you're wrong...
but you are probably right. It’s hard to tell what kind of form he’s in. Here is Carlos tweet:
http://twitter.com/CARLOSBARREDO
Another hard day.Great acttion to Caisse, not too much differents on the arrive…For my good fellings so I hope will be better next days.
You would have thought that the rest of the peloton would have used that logic when Devolder
went into the break in last year’s RVV. He can get into a break but it will just be a trial and error process, if he wants to try that
Yeah, that helps--thanks.
By the way, do you know when the Ed League started scoring? Was it with Het Nieuwsvolk, or not until after the final distribution on whatever day that was?
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
Tomorrow's stage and stage 3 are also tricky
Both have climbs near the end, especially stage three. Tomorrow’s stage reminds me of the stage last year where Vande velde took of to win and Contador attacked Chavanel: a seemingly innocuous cat 3 climb 9 km from the finish.
Stage 3 definitely has danger written all over it with a cat 2 climb 3 km from the finish.
There was a similar stage last year, wasn't it?
Don’t remember if there were echelons, but one team (Rabobank perhaps) blew the field apart and Contador had to chase all by himself. He’s not exactly on his toes, lots to learn.
Staring at the swim team gets you killed by a gang of dancing ninja men who know how to twirl.
your right up to the contador chasing by himself part. The group up the road was mostly Quick Steppers
and Rabo’s. Contador came in with all the G.C. favorites at 1’09 so they would have chased so their chances were not ruined

Found it--yesterday's CN report on the prologue:
American Christian Vande Velde finished 42 seconds back. He injured his ankle in the Vuelta ao Algarve and is on the mend.
“I’m happy we had a good result and I think we’re motivated to be in good form,” said Millar. “With Christian working to regain his fitness I’m hoping we’ll have a good finish.”
It's fun to beat Cancellara--Edvald Boasson Hagen
Cunego, Bono, and Ponzi
were all caught in the crashes, but no injuries. Cunego wasn’t pursuing the gc at this race, according to his team, so they’re not worried.

seeing this is the perfect race for him to pursue the GC…well someday he will finally get it.
March 14, 2010: The great one returns!
Probably thinking...
it’s too early in the season in relation to his main ambition, Liège. Also, there are a bunch of week-long stage races in Italy scattered around the calendar that are probably of more interest to the sponsor.
Form Dom's fanpage:
Dominique Rollin: “Cold windy day in France. But happy to be here, it’s snowing in Girona(15cm)?!?. Carnaged in the field, not due to the wind, but crashes. I avoided Levi who crashed in front of me. Good for him because I don’t think he would have survived me falling on him. Superb pirouete to stay up though, costed me a 20k chase to co…me back in the front group where the lead 15 riders where gone…argg, we’ll get them tomorrow”
The part about Levi made me laugh!
Saw that on facebook and I "lol"ed...
If he can get to the front group for a sprint, then he has a good shot for a podium though with Greipel, a win looks unlikely
Update from Dom...facebook

Nico Verhoeven
Easily the nicest and most likeable Rabo DS. And the best one to manage Boom, they were already a good team in the Rabo continental ranks. According to Nico Boom is not in top condition yet :-)
Nico was also the DS that towed Contador back to the peloton. He describes how Contador almost hit his back bumper when he had to slow down a little for Contador’s teammates who were waiting for him. Afterwards Contador shed all his teammates but stayed glued to the Rabo car back bumper. Cool stuff!

But what’s worse, he hurt his right leg and ankle. He also complained about hip pain.

Weather problems for the race?
A LOT of snow has fallen over the south of France and looking at the forecast until this week-end, I fail to see how the snow will melt by the time they reach Aurillac and Mende. At worst, this might cause some road changes, at best we should have some eerie scenes along the race. We’ll see I guess !
