Paris-Nice Results Thread

Plenty o' thrills and spills, with a sprint at the end:

2nhnf53_medium

And the results, another nice day for Team Sky:

  1. Greg Henderson, Sky
  2. Grega Bole, Lampre, s.t.
  3. Jérémie Galland, Saur-Sojasun, s.t.
  4. Alexandr Kolobnev, Katusha, s.t.
  5. Alejandro Valverde, Caisse d'Epargne, s.t.
On GC, no real change, despite a lot of action. Lars Boom had been caught out for a spell, but was given the same time in the end. If anyone hears of injuries (Hoogerland??), let us know. Presumably the crashes were benign, but I didn't see them.

Thought he'd said he'd finally given up on that & would ride for stage wins?

Unless of course he’s sandbagging (but to sandbag you surely have to be in a position to do so?). Or just trying to avoid a three weeks like the ones he had last May.

I think he has talked about that

but looking at the way he climbed at the vuelta last year, I don’t see any reason he can’t get top 10 or even top 5 at the Giro. He just shouldn’t be sacrificing chances at the classics on the idea that this might help him win another one

Hanging around at willpower.. Boom has more style when he climbs.. But at the end, with this sticking in his head see the 1sec sprints, I think Voigt can not get rid of Boom in the hills

ok we'll see,

probly both get dropped pretty badly. I say conta makes up enough time to finish ahead of both of them. But maybe not ahead of lulu.

by yeehoo on Mar 8, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Lulu

I’m thinking that Mende will be a big test for Lulu who has not shown in the past that he can keep up with Bert and the other real goats.

by ursula on Mar 8, 2010 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

just a question of how much time conta can make up

I remember he was behind last year prior to de lure and made up all the time he needed. If caisse doesn’t gain more time, i’m thinking conta can make up 11 secs. Especially looking at those steep grades someone has just posted! 3 km at 10% – conta time.

by yeehoo on Mar 8, 2010 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Last year

Heading into de lure, Bert was 36 seconds down on Chavanel. Here was the top 10:

1 Sylvain Chavanel (Fra) Quick Step 18.32.56
2 Juan Manuel Garate (Spa) Rabobank 0.06
3 Juan Antonio Flecha (Spa) Rabobank 0.36
4 Alberto Contador (Spa) Astana
5 Kevin Seeldrayers (Bel) Quick Step 0.37
6 Luis-Leon Sanchez (Spa) Caisse d’Epargne 0.45
7 David Millar (GBr) Garmin – Slipstream 0.50
8 Antonio Colom (Spa) Team Katusha 0.55
9 Vladimir Karpets (Rus) Team Katusha 0.57
10 Jens Voigt (Ger) Team Saxo Bank 1.03

After de lure, Bert was 1st by …

1 Alberto Contador (Spa) Astana 23.21.08
2 Luis Leon Sanchez (Spa) Caisse d’Epargne 1.13
3 Sylvain Chavanel (Fra) Quick Step 1.24
4 Frank Schleck (Lux) Team Saxo Bank 1.38
5 Kevin Seeldrayers (Bel) Quick Step 2.01
6 Jens Voigt (Ger) Team Saxo Bank 2.06
7 Samuel Sanchez (Spa) Euskaltel – Euskadi 2.14
8 Jonathan Hivert (Fra) Skil-Shimano 2.29
9 Antonio Colom (Spa) Team Katusha 2.35
10 Yury Trofimov (Rus) BBox Bouygues Telecom 3.09

De lure was not quite 1000 feet in 14.5 miles. Longer but not as steep as Mende. SAs I recall, Lulu did a great job clawing back to Schleck. Jens! did a lot of early pulling then faded. Wonder how Saxo will work it this year?

by ursula on Mar 8, 2010 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

Recent history

At Algarve Lulu couldn’t keep up. And last year on Ventoux’ little sister Lulu couldn’t keep up. But you never know. Last year on the last stage Lulu was able to use Saxo to keep him close enough.

I actually think the Col de Vance might be the biggest Boom-killer

Mende is short enough for someone with as much power as Boom to hang on with a little extra motivation.
Not sure he can hang on if the climbers decide to light it up on the Col de Vance.

You sure?

I had a look at the route description and it seemed to me like they were coming at it from the south side:

yes they are

coming from the south side. Tourette, Vence, Col de Vence. Look up brahmafan (which is on the incorrect one) on a google map – you’ll see it’s on the other side – along the loup.

by yeehoo on Mar 8, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks

I guess I didn’t bother to look up what was written on the profiles (or to read them at all) :(

by tedvdw on Mar 8, 2010 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I’m not sure what’s up with the offcial site. They may be counting the climb from a different starting point – ie, somewhere further up the profile – or they may have the wrong stats. I couldn’t figure that out, actually.

But this is the right one. Alpes Maritimes is outside Nice. Grenoble, nowhere near it.

by cyclingdiva on Mar 8, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

As much as I love Chava I can't see it.

Chavanel is too big of a name to let slip into a serious break.

Plus Caisse d’Epargne is showing serious interest in this race so they are one more full team committed to running down any break.

But the clincher to me is that he didn’t get into the break today and the remaining stages are all hillier. Not that he’s pants on hills but he’s going against the best on their territory and he just doesn’t have that quality.

Ideally he should be up by several seconds to a minute now if he is to seriously contest for the podium. Unfortunately he’s looking up at Lulu and VV, Bert and Levi, Kreuziger, Tondo, Samu, Sagan, Taaramae, etc. He can get by some of those dudes but all of them? Not a chance.

Tomorrow's stage and stage 3 are also tricky

Both have climbs near the end, especially stage three. Tomorrow’s stage reminds me of the stage last year where Vande velde took of to win and Contador attacked Chavanel: a seemingly innocuous cat 3 climb 9 km from the finish.

Stage 3 definitely has danger written all over it with a cat 2 climb 3 km from the finish.

Don’t remember if there were echelons, but one team (Rabobank perhaps) blew the field apart and Contador had to chase all by himself. He’s not exactly on his toes, lots to learn.

Easily the nicest and most likeable Rabo DS. And the best one to manage Boom, they were already a good team in the Rabo continental ranks. According to Nico Boom is not in top condition yet :-)

Nico was also the DS that towed Contador back to the peloton. He describes how Contador almost hit his back bumper when he had to slow down a little for Contador’s teammates who were waiting for him. Afterwards Contador shed all his teammates but stayed glued to the Rabo car back bumper. Cool stuff!

Petacchi fell too

During a training ride. 5 stitches in his chin. (Benna has set a new trend…)
But what’s worse, he hurt his right leg and ankle. He also complained about hip pain.

Weather problems for the race?

A LOT of snow has fallen over the south of France and looking at the forecast until this week-end, I fail to see how the snow will melt by the time they reach Aurillac and Mende. At worst, this might cause some road changes, at best we should have some eerie scenes along the race. We’ll see I guess !

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
