from daunted newbie to PODIUM!!!

Please pardon the proud papa post. :)

About a year ago my wife turned to PdC with a post about our daughter's discouraging experience as a newbie on her high school's mountain bike racing team.  Thanks to all of you who took the time to chime in on that post.

She ended up having lots of fun at the 2009 races, and even nabbed the last qualifying spot for US Nationals for her age group thanks to her consistency.

Well, she did loads of riding during the off-season, and yesterday was all about the PODIUM BABY!!!!!! [youtube]

Third place, and a first-class ticket to racing in varsity (top category) next year!!! :D :D :D

We're all just tickled and had to share.  Thanks in advance for this intrusion on the regular PdC bandwidth.

(Next race in two weeks!  Wooo!!)

Awesome!!

Congrats to her!!

If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when are you going to have time to do it again?

That's wonderful!

By all means, keep us up to date—how cool!

hell i wish mountain bikes even existed when i was a kid

well maybe they did a bit but i hadn’t heard of them. I would have been nuts about it.

definitely check out my link above!

We can’t turn the clock back, but we can help make things happen for the kids of the future. Leagues are gearing up in Colorado and Washington (state).

The northern California league has been going for about ten years, and there were 530 riders pre-registered last week before the race. I believe that the full count for this season is predicted to reach over 600.

Lots of opportunity, for sure! :)

p.s.: This is just one category (first-year boys) lined up at the starting line in one of the three waves of groups from Sunday’s race. Tons of kids racing bikes!! Wahoo! Loads of ’em dig road & track, too.

I heart proud dads!

Very cool! Especially for her, because you are not one of those “my kid should excel where I failed” kind of psycho-dads, right? ;-)

This is very cool

And if I were you, i.e. my kid winning races, I would have struggled not to write the entire post in all caps. Well done!!

3rd, not winning-winning, but still she's a winner in our book and the podium's the podium. :)

We’re all waiting for the third race, cuz it has vertical and my kid is at her best when it kicks up. ;)

3rd = podium = win

for shorthand purposes anyway.

I sure feel better now than I did...

…waiting for her to finish her final lap. “OMG if the tubeless tires fail she’s gonna disown me. Dang it I really should have replaced that shifter cable housing…” etc. Last lap was her fastest — negative split — but it was an eternity waiting!! :)

Congratulations to all of you, especially your daughter. That is fantastic news.

Oh this is super cool.

I remember that thread and I’m so glad she’s doing well.

Congrats, and...

… and thanks a lot for the reminder that my sweet little one is going to be in HIGH SCHOOL not too far down the road… ;)

She’s outgrowing the 20-incher, it’s time for her first real bike. I found a classic x-small Stumpjumper for $75 that had been in somebody’s garage for eons. Dirty, yet immaculate. The cogs aren’t even seriously worn. Fresh paint and a bit of a road/rando makeover (she wants to rock the local kids’ Tri), and let the adventures begin!

What? What happens when you meet a stranger in the Alps?

by FaustoCoppock on Mar 8, 2010 7:52 PM EST reply actions

Yeah!!!

Just follow her lead, and it will be nothing but fun for both of you!!

So fabulous!!

Congrats to her! :)

Rock!

I remember that first post, and the high hopes for her. So cool. I expect that:

1) you will show her this post and the PdC love, and
2) that we will get a live twitter stream of future races.

Looks like raising her arms in victory on the podium comes

quite naturally to her :-) I, too, remember your post and am so happy for her. And you! Chapeau, Em!

Big Congratulations to you both!

Happy daughter, proud papa.
Not to steal your or her spotlight, but we had a rather large cycling-related breakthrough yesterday in my family. NO MORE TRAINING WHEELS!!!!

Beyond awesome!!!!

Wooooo! Please keep us updated on future races. Maybe one day we’ll be doing a live interview on PdC with her!

by Megabeth on Mar 9, 2010 9:06 AM EST reply actions

That's so cool.

Congrats to her for sticking with it!

I’ll also echo the comments by others that I wish something like this had been around when I was in school.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
