No idea

When they first showed him, it was still on there but he was waving back to the car, apparently already aware that it had cracked. Then when he reached back he suddenly had his saddle and part of the seatpost in his hand.

Eurostar.

It leaves at 8.27 and I need to be there an hour early to check my bike in. First train into central London from my suburb is at 6.16, getting in at 7.44. That leaves me 45 minutes to get to St Pancras in a taxi and deposit my bike. This will be fine as long as the train is not late/cancelled. The other option is to get the underground, which starts earlier, but due to engineering works I’d have to get a taxi from significantly further out. I don’t know what to do…I’d be devastated if I missed the Eurostar, or got there too late to check the bike in!

Yep, hell.

Barring circumstances I have a hard time imagining, I’ll never car commute again, myself. But some people get locked into the idea of an enormous house/yard, and will waste spend hours and hours of their lives in traffic in order have it.

But even then (and this isn’t aimed at you), that’s often an issue of perception over reality. The schools around me are tops – and I’m right in the middle of things.

by JFS_PGH on Apr 1, 2010 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

we've got lots...

bunch ‘o language ones, performing arts, various sciences, even a “jobs” (which seems like some computer-friendly version of vo-tec). Enough are new that the jury’s still out on how high they’ll yank up the scores (the new ones tend to be in previously-failing schools that might otherwise have been closed, and many still draw, additionally, from the home neighborhood) but it does mean better teachers, a nucleus of interested, committed parents, and at minimum a spare language (always useful).

by JFS_PGH on Apr 1, 2010 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

when we first moved down here, oh lo those 20 years ago, the commute was only half the distance

when his job moved, he first lived in hotels during the week and home on the weekends; then into a succession of apartments; then we bought a second house; then again into rented rooms after he had to switch jobs again and his salary was half of what it use to be.

not going to keep moving when his job moves a little distance. we’ll prob move again in about five years… back up to loudoun county or that. but i refuse to live in places where you can’t have a fenced yard because “it doesn’t look right”. sorry the safety of my puppies matters more than your aesthetics. ah well, as you say probably not practical

if you have them you could try an old duvet cover or curtains with gaffer tape – basically you just need to stop it looking too much like a bike

funny, cause I "heard" that totally differently.

US standard discourse is practically irony free, but I imagine Seahorse in “’Strine,” which adds a more complex overlay. Taken that way, it’s partly ironic, though also with a more literal meaning of “can’t see the forest” (riders) “for the trees” (stats).

But yeah, we’re again hitting our heads on the “tone / intent / humor” do not automatically translate from country to country or region to region (or person to person), never mind actual language to language. Thus smiley, parenthetical comment, and the most important tool—the willingness to believe that your fellow PdC posters have a pretty darn functional brain, and a love for the sport.

If you’re a rider, it’s a hell of a lot more risky doing something like that – for this very reason – than it is doing a straight up press interview. & for that – & his riding – he has my respect, however much I thought his answer to Albertina was rather over the top.

Robbie's answer is just one answer

So we’ve had three chats on PdC. (I am not counting Ten Dam because I never read it):

- Ted King obviously uses his King Of Style as a schtick. It’s funny but ultimately it’s a protective barrier that allows him to make it through the world of pro cycling.

- Brent Bookwater is a wide-eyed little kid hanging on the end of the peloton. We’ll see if he stays in Europe and if he does how he changes because he’ll need to change.

- Dom Rollin is meeting the aggression of the peloton with aggression of his own. Fighting fire with fire you might say. Growing up in Quebec, more macho than what King and Bookwater grew up with, allows him to do that easier. And at this point, still trying to establish himself, that non-nonsense asshole demeanor allows him to thrive. If he succeeds he’ll probably mellow a little like Robbie.

I’m not saying you have to like him or that’s a great way to get through the world but pro cycling is seriously male and even if King or Bookwater don’t mention it, women are inferior in that world.

by ursula on Apr 1, 2010 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

They are slower. That's a valid metric.

“inferior” or “not due normal human respect”—that’s not intrinsic to the sport, anymore than it’s intrinsic to math departments.

by JFS_PGH on Apr 1, 2010 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

It was the implication that a girl couldn’t ride hard. i suspect i also took offense because i know Albertina and her passion for cycling, which involves a lot more than sitting on the couch.

I didn’t find it very funny being labelled an un-tough ‘girl’ who obviously has no idea what cycling is all about and has probably never seen a classic otherwise I wouldn’t have dared to ask such a lighthearted question. The implication was sexist, and assumed I was ignorant. Which I’m not by a long chalk. It may suprise him to know that I’ve ridden plenty of cobbles and plan to do so again on Saturday, probably in a howling gale and pouring rain. I may not be a good cyclist but I’m tough.

It is lack of worthwhile male role models who treat women with honour and respect.

I just reread the question you asked him.

It didn’t come off as being written in a way that would have evoked a serious answer. Way too wordy and was asking for trouble, please note that his answer was taken as a joke by most who read it. Maybe he should have skipped the question though, especially if he thought the question was poorly written otherwise you could just take it as an attempt at comedy.

I know I know. I think I've said everything I want to on this.

To a girl it was offensive, whether meant in jest or not. That’s how I took it and I’m not the only one. But I’ll be more careful next time. Ted King answered a similar question very much in the spirit in which it was asked, but he’s a different person, I know.

by Albertina on Apr 1, 2010 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Just so you know, I smiled when I saw the question.

It made me feel at home. Like the running jokes that a family or circle of friends share being trotted out for one more laugh. I was deeply saddened by the response. I as a Canadian and a man apologize for the rudeness.

I felt that we lost a little something when you got hurt there.

These are the risks one takes when one invites strangers into ones home.

I also wonder what the response would have been if you had a less obviously feminine screen name?

i was in the thread following all the banter….i think the question was good and i thought the answer was funny also. given the context of his other answers i think it was an attempt at a joke. but i’ve had my “online feelings” hurt where i see the text differently than others. if you feel offended, that’s how you feel. but you don’t need to be more careful next time bc you didn’t do anything wrong! ride on!

I don't beleive the question was poorly written.

I did feel it might be a bit of an “inside joke”, DR could not be expected to know of the long running conversation which has consumed so many keystrokes here on the PdC.

All of that does nothing to make what he said right or on point.

If a serious answer was desired then a more tactfully question should have been crafted.

How many times do you see a poll where the results are skewed by the use of phrases or specific wording. How the question is asked makes a huge difference.

The one thing I'll say about this, and this is not meant to defend DR, who overreacted at least...

…is that a lot of male cyclists might well have taken quite a bit of abuse over shaving. My LBS owner, who’s a very liberal, cool guy, tells stories about being the subject of quite a bit of abuse over it in HS. I can well imagine that at least some cyclists, esp from non-traditional cycling countries, have a bit of a chip on their shoulders about it. DR’s reaction read as something on that order to me, frankly.

by Ed K on Apr 1, 2010 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Dumb question though?

Why the hell DO cyclists shave? I’ve heard a number of reasons, e.g….
- road rash
- nightly massage

But none of them seem sufficient for any but full time pros. Could someone who does more than my commute/weekend ride effort please enlightment. My current best guess is that it is part of the look…

by sebastiandeluded on Apr 1, 2010 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't buy the heals faster...

…but having had a nasty crash last summer, getting bandages on and off is less unpleasant if you’re not also pulling hair out, by a fair bit.

Pros can more or less expect to crash.

by Ed K on Apr 1, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

it can heal faster if you keep it covered all the time

(what messes with this argument is that the hair is growing back while the bandage is covered. And after a couple of days of being smothered by tegaderm, the hair follicles in-grow. very pleasant).

But shaving just looks better . . .

He’s shot up to 112th, while my son and I are adjacent at 216 and 217. At least we’re all in the top half—all three of us were out of it at the beginning of the week.

I wish I could score 10 points.

Lucky people getting 10 points.

If it weren’t for boom and langeveld surging in for minor placings at E3 I wouldn’t have had points in a long while. Oh and roche got me a couple a CI.

But wow unless maaskant, langeveld, and Boom blow up this weekend I will languish until the Ardennes.
