"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Eurostar.
It leaves at 8.27 and I need to be there an hour early to check my bike in. First train into central London from my suburb is at 6.16, getting in at 7.44. That leaves me 45 minutes to get to St Pancras in a taxi and deposit my bike. This will be fine as long as the train is not late/cancelled. The other option is to get the underground, which starts earlier, but due to engineering works I’d have to get a taxi from significantly further out. I don’t know what to do…I’d be devastated if I missed the Eurostar, or got there too late to check the bike in!
no kind friends to drop you off? i would do that for you...

No, it's totally the same here
just on a much smaller scale.
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
of course not - and wasn't aware of the circumstances
but I imagine if I were in that situation I’d try and compromise in a different way – spending that much time in a car is my idea of hell
if i don't hear from him after three hours on the road, i call and see what's going on
and that’s by a route avoiding the parking lot known at i95
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Yep, hell.
Barring circumstances I have a hard time imagining, I’ll never car commute again, myself. But some people get locked into the idea of an enormous house/yard, and will waste spend hours and hours of their lives in traffic in order have it.
Yo--there are other concerns.
We moved away from the city center because of the schools. Indianapolis Public Schools are horrendous—the graduation rate is under 50%.
The advantage of becoming pigeon takes enormous proportions.--Sporza live ticker, Stage 2 Driedaagse de Panne, courtesy of Google Translate.
Oh, for sure.
But even then (and this isn’t aimed at you), that’s often an issue of perception over reality. The schools around me are tops – and I’m right in the middle of things.
Wish I could say the same thing about Chicago
Lived in city for 10 years, but now with a 5-month old, I don’t see how we can stay unless we opt for private $chool.
We have Magnet schools and that is definitely the ideal situation, as we love the city
We need more magnet schools though to meet the need.
we've got lots...
bunch ‘o language ones, performing arts, various sciences, even a “jobs” (which seems like some computer-friendly version of vo-tec). Enough are new that the jury’s still out on how high they’ll yank up the scores (the new ones tend to be in previously-failing schools that might otherwise have been closed, and many still draw, additionally, from the home neighborhood) but it does mean better teachers, a nucleus of interested, committed parents, and at minimum a spare language (always useful).
when we first moved down here, oh lo those 20 years ago, the commute was only half the distance
when his job moved, he first lived in hotels during the week and home on the weekends; then into a succession of apartments; then we bought a second house; then again into rented rooms after he had to switch jobs again and his salary was half of what it use to be.
not going to keep moving when his job moves a little distance. we’ll prob move again in about five years… back up to loudoun county or that. but i refuse to live in places where you can’t have a fenced yard because “it doesn’t look right”. sorry the safety of my puppies matters more than your aesthetics. (the poa’s. not you sui)

they take them in a bike bag without questions
did it for flanders last year – just carry it on as though it was a large, oddly-shaped luggage – no need for a special check-in
Hmm, might not be very practical.
I’m in Upminster. I’m busy tonight in town until about 7.30 and I haven’t packed yet…nightmare
ah well, as you say probably not practical
if you have them you could try an old duvet cover or curtains with gaffer tape – basically you just need to stop it looking too much like a bike
as it’s on the train there’s little need to worry about padding as it’ll only be you handling it
That's possible.
I think I might just get the tube though, really early, and get a taxi from Bromley by Bow. I’ll fret if I have to rely on the c2c train being on time!
It looks like Australians need to give you lot lessons in being yappy...

funny, cause I "heard" that totally differently.
US standard discourse is practically irony free, but I imagine Seahorse in “’Strine,” which adds a more complex overlay. Taken that way, it’s partly ironic, though also with a more literal meaning of “can’t see the forest” (riders) “for the trees” (stats).
But yeah, we’re again hitting our heads on the “tone / intent / humor” do not automatically translate from country to country or region to region (or person to person), never mind actual language to language. Thus smiley, parenthetical comment, and the most important tool—the willingness to believe that your fellow PdC posters have a pretty darn functional brain, and a love for the sport.
Thank you though. i was only being half serious...
and I sure as hell wasn’t aiming for offensive.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'

He’s in a crazy competitive world and he is trying to beat it. Manners are way down on his priority list.
if mcewen can answer the same question with humour

He didn't have to give up his time to come talk to us
… which he did… & if we are going to continue to have these chats, well, we’re just going to have to be prepared for the fact that not every rider is always going to respond to everything in a way which all of us would always like.
If you’re a rider, it’s a hell of a lot more risky doing something like that – for this very reason – than it is doing a straight up press interview. & for that – & his riding – he has my respect, however much I thought his answer to Albertina was rather over the top.

I’m commenting… that’s the fun of PdC. And the fact that we don’t all agree makes it more interesting for me.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
he also had no context for the goofier
questions. He was like a child who wanders into a movie …
We know albertina is just having fun with the little gag of doing the wax or shave poll and it playing into hottitude somehow i guess. Then there’s the little hockey debate going on here. But he had no context for those question and … and obviously also not his style.

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Robbie's answer is just one answer
So we’ve had three chats on PdC. (I am not counting Ten Dam because I never read it):
- Ted King obviously uses his King Of Style as a schtick. It’s funny but ultimately it’s a protective barrier that allows him to make it through the world of pro cycling.
- Brent Bookwater is a wide-eyed little kid hanging on the end of the peloton. We’ll see if he stays in Europe and if he does how he changes because he’ll need to change.
- Dom Rollin is meeting the aggression of the peloton with aggression of his own. Fighting fire with fire you might say. Growing up in Quebec, more macho than what King and Bookwater grew up with, allows him to do that easier. And at this point, still trying to establish himself, that non-nonsense asshole demeanor allows him to thrive. If he succeeds he’ll probably mellow a little like Robbie.
I’m not saying you have to like him or that’s a great way to get through the world but pro cycling is seriously male and even if King or Bookwater don’t mention it, women are inferior in that world.
They are slower. That's a valid metric.
“inferior” or “not due normal human respect”—that’s not intrinsic to the sport, anymore than it’s intrinsic to math departments.
Slower is no problem...
It was the implication that a girl couldn’t ride hard. i suspect i also took offense because i know Albertina and her passion for cycling, which involves a lot more than sitting on the couch.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Albertina sure rides hard, we know that
DR OTOH looks at cycling as fighting for position to get up the Muur-a whole couple levels tougher.
Yeah, he’s sexist. And rude. That’s not a problem for him evidently at this point in his life.
Agreed..
and hopefully he’ll mellow..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
And I'll learn a lesson too.
I don’t want people to think I’m nothing but shallow. You people know me (well, in an online sense!) but Dom doesn’t, and perhaps I shouldn’t have asked something as light hearted…but ho hum.
Water under the bridge now...
but given your deep knowledge and passion, you’ll be able to think of something light-hearted and clever ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
You know what, i'd like to think that, but he was aggressive...
he could have just ignored it.

It is the internet, English isn't his first language...
all sorts of stuff.
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
Nice of you to say so...he lost me then,
and as i said, i didn’t even like the question.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I know, but he should realise that too.
I didn’t find it very funny being labelled an un-tough ‘girl’ who obviously has no idea what cycling is all about and has probably never seen a classic otherwise I wouldn’t have dared to ask such a lighthearted question. The implication was sexist, and assumed I was ignorant. Which I’m not by a long chalk. It may suprise him to know that I’ve ridden plenty of cobbles and plan to do so again on Saturday, probably in a howling gale and pouring rain. I may not be a good cyclist but I’m tough.
He didn't like the question...you didn't like the answer...
His answer toward the hockey question was a big clue that he wanted serious questions…
"If me and King Kong went into an alley, only one of us would come out. And it wouldn't be the monkey."
"I don't really trust a sane person."
"I never met a man I didn't want to fight." The one and only Lyle Alzado
Bruce I'm with you on that...
I’m just trying to say that I think he wanted to be serious…and I don’t think he meant to be sexist toward Albertina…at least I hope not..

You know, I don't normally get my knickers in a twist about sexism
but it was a big put down, and unnecessary.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
That's fair enough, but I still think it was uncalled for.
And anyway, he hadn’t answered the hockey question by the time I wrote mine.
So in order to be taken seriously, you could think about asking a question
based on what we know is your extensive knowledge of, and passion for the sport… maybe?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Yes I know, and I probably would have done later but I had to run off to a rehearsal after 25 minutes.
Don’t worry, I won’t do this again.
so now to prove that we're on a par with the male fans round here
we should constrain ourselves to the serious stuff & let the men handle the trivia, right? ;-)

Well, maybe not trivia with a salacious undertone ;)
i would never survive without trivia =)

Hm, the point of questions is normally to find out answers.
Not to massage egos. In that sense, any question, if you really care about the answer, is a legit question, I guess. But if he figures it’s the most pressing question in your mind, he’s not nuts to assume that your mind runs in shallower channels than it actually does? Still not appropriate to be rude, of course!

It is not a lack of femminism that leads men to act ignorantly.
It is lack of worthwhile male role models who treat women with honour and respect.
I felt his comments were derogatory and insulting. I believe that there may have been a tone disconnect between his internal voice and what the screen actually said, but the words have no place in an open forum discussion board.

Yep.
Because the “it’s not meant badly” answer still often works out to “you don’t get respect / promotion in any of a large number of jobs.” Somewhat immune to that in singing, I suppose, unless they bring back castrati, or where parity is protected by law.
Ha! Well actually, I often get passed up for countertenors!
But that’s usually for reasons of ‘period authenticity’….grrrr
Haha, good one.
I did a St John Passion a couple of weeks ago and the conductor actually asked my friend, who is a brilliant beautifully fruity mezzo, to try and sound more like a countertenor! I simply could not believe the nerve. If he’d said that to me I’d have had a very big diva moment indeed!
wondering how to phrase that in terms of tone
rather than gender. More uniform coloring? Less inflection?
That's a pretty good assessment Ted!
Less rich generally. Less fruity. A thinner sound, sometimes faster vibrato (although my friend certainly doesn’t have offensive warble). More direct.
I doubt it.
He’d already popped in on our pre-chat thread, plus there were 3 earlier live chats for him to check out—one of them with a teammate.

I guess you can read a comment in many ways. I first read it as irony/defense mechanism.
If the question really pissed him off twell.. That’s just his insecurity shining through I guess. Machismo in sport is unsurprising though. It is very possible that he didn’t realize that Albertina is a girl though. Not that that makes it better, just different in a way.
I'm Australian...machismo in sport is served in mother's milk...
I like to think it’s changing though..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I just reread the question you asked him.
It didn’t come off as being written in a way that would have evoked a serious answer. Way too wordy and was asking for trouble, please note that his answer was taken as a joke by most who read it. Maybe he should have skipped the question though, especially if he thought the question was poorly written otherwise you could just take it as an attempt at comedy.

I know I know. I think I've said everything I want to on this.
To a girl it was offensive, whether meant in jest or not. That’s how I took it and I’m not the only one. But I’ll be more careful next time. Ted King answered a similar question very much in the spirit in which it was asked, but he’s a different person, I know.
Just so you know, I smiled when I saw the question.
It made me feel at home. Like the running jokes that a family or circle of friends share being trotted out for one more laugh. I was deeply saddened by the response. I as a Canadian and a man apologize for the rudeness.
I felt that we lost a little something when you got hurt there.
These are the risks one takes when one invites strangers into ones home.
I also wonder what the response would have been if you had a less obviously feminine screen name?

late opinion but
i was in the thread following all the banter….i think the question was good and i thought the answer was funny also. given the context of his other answers i think it was an attempt at a joke. but i’ve had my “online feelings” hurt where i see the text differently than others. if you feel offended, that’s how you feel. but you don’t need to be more careful next time bc you didn’t do anything wrong! ride on!

I guess it’s about context…what’s fine with one person may not be fine with another, but anyway, water under the bridge.
Nothing wrong with the question.
I’d like to think that the answer was a botched (imho) attempt at being funny. My last two nickles on the subject.
I don't beleive the question was poorly written.
I did feel it might be a bit of an “inside joke”, DR could not be expected to know of the long running conversation which has consumed so many keystrokes here on the PdC.
All of that does nothing to make what he said right or on point.

If a serious answer was desired then a more tactfully question should have been crafted.
How many times do you see a poll where the results are skewed by the use of phrases or specific wording. How the question is asked makes a huge difference.

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
The one thing I'll say about this, and this is not meant to defend DR, who overreacted at least...
…is that a lot of male cyclists might well have taken quite a bit of abuse over shaving. My LBS owner, who’s a very liberal, cool guy, tells stories about being the subject of quite a bit of abuse over it in HS. I can well imagine that at least some cyclists, esp from non-traditional cycling countries, have a bit of a chip on their shoulders about it. DR’s reaction read as something on that order to me, frankly.
Dumb question though?
Why the hell DO cyclists shave? I’ve heard a number of reasons, e.g….
- road rash
- nightly massage
But none of them seem sufficient for any but full time pros. Could someone who does more than my commute/weekend ride effort please enlightment. My current best guess is that it is part of the look…
Really????
Surely, again, it only makes a difference to guys who can hold 55kph… i mean, i have some fur but its not the reason I’m gasping for breath at the traffic lights…
:)

by sebastiandeluded on Apr 1, 2010 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions
I don't buy the heals faster...
…but having had a nasty crash last summer, getting bandages on and off is less unpleasant if you’re not also pulling hair out, by a fair bit.
Pros can more or less expect to crash.
it can heal faster if you keep it covered all the time
(what messes with this argument is that the hair is growing back while the bandage is covered. And after a couple of days of being smothered by tegaderm, the hair follicles in-grow. very pleasant).
But shaving just looks better . . .
pretty much
that and the “everyone is doing it” thing. Anything else is pretty much defensive justification.
Sorry - I've just reread my own post and realised it could be taken as insulting...
…. for the record, I was the one asking the dumb question about the absence of hirsuteness in the peleton – not Albertina about how it was achieved in a particular case…
:)
Possibly. That had never occurred to me and I certainly didn't mean it in any way like that!

I would totally love to see him do well.
He rode so strongly in the spring last year for no real result.
solid bet for top 10-20 at his best...

No punch but he can grind

Since I have no one who's scoring any points
this is what I’m reduced to. Not that different from last year when I didn’t have a team.

Gah. My husband's team has both Milllar and Grivko.
He’s shot up to 112th, while my son and I are adjacent at 216 and 217. At least we’re all in the top half—all three of us were out of it at the beginning of the week.

10 points awesome!
I wish I could score 10 points.
Lucky people getting 10 points.
If it weren’t for boom and langeveld surging in for minor placings at E3 I wouldn’t have had points in a long while. Oh and roche got me a couple a CI.
But wow unless maaskant, langeveld, and Boom blow up this weekend I will languish until the Ardennes.
