Twit du Jour

Manuel Quinziato rode the cobbles today in preparation for Sunday's big day out. He has today's Twit du Jour.
PR recon done. It's always a special day. I liked my ride today, I had fun and that's important... No fun no passion and cycling is passion! about 1 hour ago via web
In other news, this week has been the Week of Lame Chores here in Gav Land. I think I'm done now. Which means I can write about bike racing s'more and play with the interwebs. Yay!
In the meantime, how 'bout some Paris-Roubaix picks? Will Tom Boonen follow his recent pattern of seconds at the Ronde and wins in Roubaix? Or, does Cancellara have the Double in his legs? Maybe it's a first time winner. Post 'em, if you got 'em!
Updated! Now, with photo! Because it's Friday, and photos are phun.

And from earlier, I liked a tweet by Marco Pinotti enough to RT but it seems he has since deleted the original. Too bad! Here’s my RT:

The Pinotti comment is in re Valverde? Or, the Italian investigation? I missed it, this am.
LOL, I really liked Trine Schmidt’s shoes, too, but Pigeons beat me to that one.

Snarky, that one. I don’t follow him, so missed it ;-)
If Cunego does turn out to be mixed up in this doping thingy, well, he does come off looking like an ass. Of course, you ‘d have to wonder what he was paying for. No official notification has reached Cunego yet, though, so we’ll see what happens with all that.
Since last year's Giro, at least
The whole Gazzetta thingy, where Cunego went all anti-doping and started a nice round of polemica. There’s been bad talk in the past too, I can’t remember why, actually.
is it just me, or does quinz look a lot like gorgeous george in that pic?

Honestly I haven’t found one single person who hasn’t already come off looking like an ass.
yeah
The tatoos are kinda dorky anyway, and if you’re wearing a dorky tat and doping too? Double super dorky. Also, calling out other riders in public, there’s a word for this one, I’m trying to think what it is…

The form’s there and so is the team. But my thinking may be a little blurred by the Abt 12, Corsendonk Dubbel, and Achel Blond that I’ve polished off tonight. It would be awesome if somehow GH or Jan Anton Vanderpijl slipped off the front while T Bone and Cance were making eyes at each other, but that is just a dream. Another dream scenario would be for it to come down to a sprint where Hushovd and/or Farrar were there to contest it. But, like I said, a dream.
If I just had one more gear, I...
Agree.
I think after last weekend it’s quite hard to see anyone beating him Cancellara at the minute. But it’s Roubaix & that’s discounting mechanical catastrophe, horrible crashes, gale force wind, torrential rain etc.

Got to Kotrijk
Walked outside the train station and saw Saxo and Katusha busses and mobile bike shops. Spent a while watching Pippo go through his bikes with the mechanic. Katusha is using a lot of different stuff. Almost everyone is riding Ambrosio’s. Lot’s of canti rear brakes, and about half the team has a rear break lever mounted on the bar tops- cross style.
Kortrijk seems to be a good place to be right now. Should see more tomorrow.
I have a hard time seeing anyone beat Tony this week, but P-R has a way of making predictions seem foolish.

If I wasn't a total wimp about the very idea of tubulars...
…and I was going to get a set of wheels built, I’d think hard about such rims, if I could find any.
they're out there.
gp4s are easier to find, though (although reflexes are good too, and velocity tubulars look reliable also).
Honestly: with aluminum rims, tufo extreme tape makes the process of mounting a tubular more easy than a clincher.
Combine that with some sealant (Stan’s caffelatex, etc) or a can of vittoria pit stop plus a tough tire like a conti sprinter gatorskin and you have a really good everyday set-up.
Because I think three in a row is unlikely
and I can’t quite believe that Spartacus can do the double, I’m going to pick a podium from the workhorses who hover around the top 10 year in, year out.

I took it in the intended way. I couldn't see beyond Quinzi!
Too bad for Frinky that Franzoi has sold his soul to CX….
How about an even harder prediction than the winner/podium?
Who’ll be in the early break? When will it get away? How long will it last?
The early break will go sometime in the first hour containing the following riders only to be swept up in the Arenberg Forest
Reiner Honig (acqua&sapone), nicholas Rosseau (AG2R), Arnaud Coyot (Caisse), Cedric Coutouly (Saur), Markus Eichler (Milram) and Joost van Leijen (Vacansoleil)
If more than one of those things is right then Lars Boom is winning Roubaix
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
I'll pick
Adam Hansen for the early break. He’ll make the Saxo Bank grimpeurs hate him.

Boonen & Cancellara will mark each other
Is it possible that Tom will sit on Fabian’s wheel out of fear and follow?
Can this lead to not so favoured riders sneakaway, if Cancellara looks the other way?
I hope Tom dont decide that “I will follow Cancellara around” because Breschel will be ready with the one two punch.
I though, I’d better let this motorbike come by but when I turned around and looked it was Cancellara - Bernard Eisel after the 2010 De Ronde.
The way I read Flanders
Boonen followed either Breschel or Cancellara, depending on who made a move.
If he does again
He definitely will be in for more problems. Q/Step need someone else up there for Mattie. From whats showing from the past two weekends, Tom has his hands filled with Cancellara alone.
I though, I’d better let this motorbike come by but when I turned around and looked it was Cancellara - Bernard Eisel after the 2010 De Ronde.
Devolder will be on good form...I would definitely not count him out of anything. He can easily mark Breschel when he is
on his A-game which is about 3 races out of the year.
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!

will be around the front with 30km left to race

Um...I would think about that
in ’08 he was right there with the big dogs, covering some moves until Cancellara made his move(and cramped at the end just to stay with Boonen) and took Boonen and Ballan with him. He was an A+ teammate that day and deserved to be congratulated.
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
I know he won the week before too in 2008
but the signs are just not there this time around.
I though, I’d better let this motorbike come by but when I turned around and looked it was Cancellara - Bernard Eisel after the 2010 De Ronde.
Other than building form and seemingly getting better over the last week and a half...
QS won’t have a team like in ’06 when they placed all 8 riders in the top 60 but Tom should have enough to take Flabian on.
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
06 is a good starting point
QS had 8 in the top-60. But when about 17 guys broke clear after the Arenberg, no one from QS except Boonen was there – not even Pippo. None of them ever made it back to the front and it made a difference. Guess who won that race…
I can see something similar happening Sunday. Though I can’t see Boonen as 7th wheel coming out of Gruson like he was that year.

VDS is so strange.
Always been a big Cancellara fan. But I picked Breschel and Boonen in VDS because I liked their prices and now I’m practically rooting against my favorite rider in every race.
Anyone else have this situation?
I always pick some riders I really can't stand ...
So that if they win I’m not so unhappy.
(According to this reasoning, I should have Valv.piti, Vino, and HWMNBN on my team).

My VDS team is so bad
It doesn’t really come up. Even when Cance left Tommeke behind on the Muur though, I couldn’t do anything but admire the move.
I do, sometimes, get annoyed at riders I almost picked but gave up on, when they race so much better than their replacements.

Scenario: race is whittled down to these three, Cancellara attacks early, but Boonen not up for getting caught out a third time, Boonen beats Breschel in the sprint.

De Vlaeminck rates Paris-Roubaix contenders
at Sporza.
As I understand, he can’t see past Cancellara unless Boonen has improved since the Tour of Flanders. Noone else is in it. It seems he puts Devolder first among guys who won’t win, but maybe someone can clarify this. Dismissed out of hand: Pozzato, Flecha, Hushovd, Vansummeren, H\o/ste, and (sort of unusually) Breschel.
Apologies to any Dutch or Flemish people if I’ve wildly misrepresented the article.
Man he is scathing if I understand the article right. On Breschel: “Who is that?”; on Flecha: “He can’t do anything himself”; on Hoste and Vansummeren: “It ain’t gonna happen.” Apologies if those are bad translations.

Comes across as a tool
He wants Cancellara to win over his countryman Boonen because he wants to preserve his record of four wins. Did the Badger, who he resembles, say he didn’t want Indurain or Armstrong to win five? Don’t think so.
See the Velonation article, which validates the translation skills of Triki and Pliny. I tried to read through sporza too with my sub-amateur Dutch…always fun.
by Mr 60 Percent on Apr 10, 2010 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I think you misunderstood
He did not say that he wanted Cance to win because of the 4 wins. Not exactly, anyway, and he put things into perspective:
“Boonen didn’t have enough in the Ronde. I don’t know how will retrieve that in a week. But I do hope he will have closed the gap, then we will see an exciting final. Still, I would prefer Cancellara to win. So I prefer Cancellara but if Boonen is the best, he can win it for my part. I care about my record but it won’t keep me awake at night. I lost two friends recently, that’s much worse. If they could return then may Boonen win Paris-Roubaix 25 more times.”
