Good morning!
The first 20 minutes of the breakaway I was regretting that I went. But after that it was a really nice day, with huge crowds. I felt like I was in the Giro, only Vinokourov was missing.--Marc de Maar, after Stage 1 of ToC
Yeah.
mr. majope usually gets up with the kid, whose school bus leaves at 6:40. But he’s swanned off to England, so I have to wake in the cold dark predawn and I don’t even know how to use the automatic feature on the coffee pot.

Unless PdC can keep me awake today.

Morning... is your VDS team cleaning up?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Afraid not. I only have Cadel.
He gets the job done though.
So do I, and Sastre.... on a brighter note, I have Porte :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
same...
Sagan and Cance are propping up my team..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Leukemans is my best
And you can stop laughing now.
I have high hopes for Gesink though.
Frinking's silver tongue seduced you?
I have Klodi… so laughter is not an option.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I'm immune to Klodi taunts :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Too good... the only comments I could make here would be lewd..
I don’t have the finesse of majope or you.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
As long as it's not lecherous, I can take it..
Aye, there’s the rub!
No-one else has been! I meant to pick Sagan but somehow deleted him
My big guns are Gesink, Greipel, EBH and J-Rod.
In other words, try again next year. It’s okay – this year has been a cracker for a cycling fan anyway.
I don't care either...
and I can’t afford to anyway.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I have J-Rod too. He has been good to us.. :)
and I am hoping for big things from him in the Vuelta. I wonder if some of the pure sprinter types like Greipel and Cav may have been a little “overpriced”.
Yeah, I thought I should have a stable of sprinters
who consistently score points.
I realise that it was a rubbish idea. I will pick riders I like from now on. J-Rod would still have made it. I like the cut of his jib.
It's a sailing term... what kind of Norwegian are you?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Ah, so it is a "jibb" then... (in Norwegian)
The kind who can’t afford a sailboat.
Yes (I think), and yes..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
me too
though i do owe every one of my seven points from the giro to him. i kind of empathize with the waitress who returns to a table and finds a $.02 tip. wow, thanks.
i had thought he was a smart move, as against O'Grady and Kloden
who’d be on my team, no matter what their form.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I respect the sentiment
If there were a women’s team Emma F would be on it regardless of her form.
Cycling form.
Some of it has to be about fandom, especially, if like me,
your cycling knowledge is limited.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Thanks Frinky... I just think I know much less than people like you and vlaanderen...
and I’ve discovered I know more about Australian cyclists than anyone else..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Stupid Porte! ;)
(only saying that because Mollema should wear that white jersey…. And Porte is riding sooo creepy strong.. As TT lose less than a minute on pure climber Mollema uphill? WHAAAT?)
I think it's because as a neo-pro he's old... and steady..
He also says that Larsson, Didier and Cooke have been amazing. He’s a good listener I think… and strong.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
From the man of the hour, Cadel:
Me? Lead out a sprint?-followed a strong attack in the last km that didn’t last. Goss keeps the Aussie flag flying ;o)
. I hope it’s another wonderful day at the Giro…
And good morning Majope.

A flat stage, a typical sprinters’ ball, with about 100x more climbing than in the first 3 days combined. Always reminds me of the grupetto in a big mountain finish, freewheeling to the top faster than I can on my best day.

EuroSport ticker says:
Dario Cataldo (Ita – Quick Step), Hubert Dupont (Fra – AG2R La Mondiale) and Charles Wegelius (GBR – Omega Pharma-Lotto) have attacked the peloton and have opened up a two minute lead.
The first 20 minutes of the breakaway I was regretting that I went. But after that it was a really nice day, with huge crowds. I felt like I was in the Giro, only Vinokourov was missing.--Marc de Maar, after Stage 1 of ToC
Make that 6:05 lead, from the Gazzetta thingy with the pictures.

And does it really say they're going 130 km/h?

So Cataldo is in the right jersey but Wegelius and Dupont need to be switched, yes? Actually, I can’t see the Ag2r jersey in any of those two. The one on the top looks like Liquigas.

He did...not that long ago either.
but tickers seem to be saying that it is Oliver Kaisen

Podicci isslightly handicapped
by his great love for all things italian. We’ve had long debates in the evenings but he is adamant about picking italians. We may have solved the mystery of what kind of bird he is. He is probably an albatross.

Well, it's quite brilliant really
But not very tall. Most routes are 1 or 2 pitches. It’s quite spicy for the grade. You will have overhung routes that convert to 5.5 in YDS. (!) Once it gets to about grade 19 (.10b) the pro is quite thin – hence RPs. The rock is bullet hard generally, and the ground steep, with lots of good athletic face climbing and small bulges.
I would love to climb at the Gunks or J-Tree though. I’ve heard good things about Wind River too.
Never been to the Gunks
But I can vouch for how awesome J-Tree is. Truly a special place. Very stiff grades, though. Stiffer than most in Colorado, imo.

I'll start low then
I’ve heard about the desert 5.9s that can be anything from grade 18 to grade 23 equivalent.
I'm not great at converting YDS grades to Australian
But I do know guys that were solid 5.12 leaders who got completely shut down on Figures on a Landscape, which goes at 5.10 b/c. I was a solid 5.10 climber when I went there and I got hammered on 5.9s. Great place.

Yes, I meant Taos.
It’s stupid how many times I’ve switched the a and the o. The Taos area really got me into climbing. I miss my summers out west so much.

Our database provider is changing the platform radically and finally today they are showing us what it will look like.
We don’t think we’re going to like it for various reasons so we’ve been trialling another one too. But the other one creates some major problems for our work. We need to decide which to go with, and there are a lot of things to consider. It’s complicated, very complicated. But the major reason for my stress is the fact that my colleague is swanning around Vienna currently and left me with all her work to do as well as mine, which is spiralling. But I do need to stop for lunch otherwise I’ll expire.
Best of luck coping with the changes.
Maybe the new platform will be faster? You do seem to have to wait a long time for results sometimes.

That's something we need to know.
With the one we’ve just trialled, we asked this question and were met by a blank stare. I don’t think they’d ever seen a strategy that long. Not helpful. The main things also are how it copes with multi database searching and deduping and also creating alerts, which we need for our current awareness service. We get the feeling the platform is being dumbed down, which is fine for end users (well actually, that’s debatable too), but not for professional searchers. And they don’t serve that many medical clients so they’re pretty bad at understanding our needs.

by thebongolian on May 18, 2010 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions
unless it was built into the price
there was no customs charge into the US. And Ted’s the first one I’ve heard had to pay customs (they should stop mucking around with people’s mail and head to Greece to work on tax collection, instead).
I was wondering about that, yes
Postman said: “Customs clearing, import duty, value added tax and such.” Wasn’t specified on the box, I guess. I’ll have it tomorrow after I pay €23.70.
Yeah
Sometimes people in Sweden use the trick of getting the sender to write “gift” on the package when they order stuff from the US (or outside the EU I guess) to avoid customs charge and VAT. Or, If you’re lucky, the custom service don’t check what’s in the package.
I don’t know what possibilities there are to contest the charges. Given that the stuff came from Italy to begin with, it’s not obvious to me that you should pay the custom and import duties. VAT may be another matter, but then the tax rates in Italy compared to the Netherlands should be noted.

Mini Phinney dominating the Netherlands
After winning the prologue yesterday, he won again today. The kid is uber talented and only 20 years old. I wonder what his plan is: stay in the amateur ranks another year or make the jump to the pros next year? And if he goes pro, where does he go. I don’t think the loyalty is there to stay at RS that people think it is. As we saw when he jumped ship from Garmin, he is going to do what’s best for his career, and I don’t think that is toiling away on a bad Classics team at RS.

I think he'll have the arrogance and determination of Armstrong
But his skill set is completely different. I don’t think there is anyway he will morph into a grand tour rider, so his profile will remain fairly low to non-cycling fans. With the power he has exhibited through winning prologues and time trials, plus his ability to ride the cobbles (U23 Paris Roubaix at 19 years old), I think his potential lies in April.

Also you should look who he beat in that sprint…there are really 2 names there in Vermeltfoort and Van Poppel. The field that is at the Olympia’s Tour this year isn’t heavy on sprinters…He got beat at Triptyque Monts Chateau a few times by guys he will most likely face more during his career.

It was a lot easier to avoid the Planet Armstrong crap on ES when it wasn’t a part of the Giro broadcast.

So watch Rai instead.
It’s not like you need detailed commentary this far from the end with an established break, and the pictures are sure pretty.
In the past it wound me up seeing riders who were not as good as me go twice as fast as me on the climbs. But I've stopped asking myself if someone is okay or not. You can't let it send you crazy. --Damiano Cunego

Good Morning Podium Cafe!!!
Its 915am local time and sunny bright and warm currently in Georgetown Guyana.
I am going to go against the house and say:
A small group of attackers will hold off the sprinters today
If I wanted to get shit small wins, I'd race shit small races (Cavendish on Greipel)
Betting against the house is always fun ..

Here are some screencaps for those with no pictures today.
Came out a little blurrier than they look on the screen, but you’ll get the idea.

From VLC Player?
I think they’re vertically stretched? VLC Player isn’t good at automatically determining the aspect ratio; I have always had to adjust the Rai Sport feed by hand to 16:9. It’s in the Video menu somewhere.
Yes, VLC. I'll try that next time I'm in it--thanks.
Part of it is the speed, I think. If I could find the control to pause it before I took the screen cap, it would probably come out better, but it disappears somewhere on my little netbook. When the image is steady, it comes out a lot clearer.
