VDS Smack talk - Giro edition

There has been a smattering of smack talk in various threads, but I thought perhaps we should gather it all in one place.  I will head this up, mostly because since the ToC is stealing a bunch of potential GC types from Italy, I figured the Giro was the place to get points this year, and structured my team accordingly.  So with no further ado, I present the Echelon of fools Giro 2010 line-up:

Ivan "still smiling" Basso

Carlos "no you're only worth 12 points" Sastre

Bauke "the other other great Dutch hope" Mollema

Chris "I don't need no stinkin' collarbone" Anker Sörensen

Frederik "I swear JV promised me leadership at the Giro" Kessiakoff

Rigoberto "it's my turn"  Uran
Eros :get me outta this jersey" Capecchi
Mauro "I was clean all along" Santambrogio
and
Enrico "deal of the century" Gasparotto

If this team doesn't get me above the 300th place mark...I don't know what will...
How do you plan on topping that one?

sigh...

I got Basso, and with Jen Gray gone he’s looking pretty good.
Also, Ale Jet should pull a stage or two.

no problem

I needed a diversion from the doping stories of the day. And I figured that confirming that your week attempt at copying my Giro team would do just fine. Sprinters….pbbbtttttthhhhhhh…I’m saving them for the tour.

i've no clue wtf's wrong with our delicate flower. :(

i started getting concerned when liquigas stopped racing him after de ronde. the team’s talk about not wanting to tire him ahead of the giro sounded unconvincing at best. i got truly suspicious, though, when he got scratched from the romandie squad. no racing for over a month and then contend in a gt sprint? eh, not likely. i admit that i more than half expected him to surface on the dopers no-longer anonymous list yesterday.

silver lining: he’ll race the tour? (i don’t think he had the tour on his program at the beginning of the season, only the giro and the vuelta.)

by discolite on May 4, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

No, he wasn't down to do the Tour.

I was kinda pleased about that as it upsets me to see Cav klopting him, the poor wee soul. I’m just weary and sad. He’s so pretty and so little seen :( Perhaps Rory Mason would give us the goss on Twitter….hmm, that’s a plan.

Lot of respect from everyone here but this is a smackthread so let's break it down, shall we?

Evans –
Sastre – Evans and Sastre, sooo hyped but both Tour-bound. Amazing if even one of them peaks here -prepare for disappointment
Nibali – late substitution, Tour-bound – no points
Gaspa – Burned his matches long ago – no points
Pate – breakaway, beaten in the sprint – how many points for third on a stage again?
Cuesta – best case : does not die of old age in week 2 – no points
Mollema – you’re kidding right?, never delivers – no points
Ignatiev – see Gaspa – no points
You are op de hoek

lets try again

Evans- clearly on form and here to win. Worst case top fat GC placing and a couple strong stage placings
Sastre- form is an enigma but this course was built for him- WC- fat GC points and 1 stage vic
Nibali- WC- top 10 overall and some high stage placings
Gaspa- good for some non winner stage points
Pate- agree
Cuesta- got a good feeling on some light GC points helping deliver Carlos
Mollema- agree
Ignatiev- i think he takes some points out of the funky transitional stages

The 'Nads are saving themselves

for the Tour, I guess. Fielding four for the Giro, would have been five except for Valjaveck being caught out for “irregularities.”

I’ve always had a soft spot for Karpets. Mainly because he has the most appropriate nickname in the whole peloton, what with that hairdo and all…

Along with a whole lot of other people, I have Szmyd. Do people pick him because of this name? (I do. Same with Fofonov.)

André Grivko, a man to strike terror into the heart of the peloton (NOT), and last but not least…

my ace in the hole, Pablo Lastras Garcia. He needs to sweep up as many points as he can, as I and only two other teams have him. (Hi Fred Marx!)

It's alright... what will happen is that now they'll be so jealous of each other..

They’ll put all their energy into that rather than winning.

Smack talk? How am I supposed to do that...

… with a team like this?:

Frantisek ‘Help me Obi-wan, you’re my only hope’ Rabon
Vladimir ‘I’m just here ‘cos Drongo’s VDS team was looking in strife’ Karpets
Markus ‘Listen and you can hear the sound of a barrel being scraped’ Fothen

It’s a team to strike fear into the hearts all those in the last 100 places on the VDS. Whose number I shall shortly join.

It strikes fear into my heart, let me tell you.

Observe my mighty collection of early-season disappointments

Ivanov, EBH, Hoste (actually he’s done relatively well for me), Bozic, Davis, Maaskant, Vansummeren. And the rest.

The only GC feller I have is Gesink. Hmmm, relying on Rabobank to get you points. That sounds like fun.

Thanks Franco! Nibali rounds out my team nicely...

I have:

Cadel “There are three steps on the podium? Who knew?” Evans
Vincenzo “Stop comparing me to Kreuziger!” Nibali
Andre the Griper
Michele “Of COURSE I’m clean” Scarponi
Mauro “Ballan’s the guy you want…” Santambrogio
Cameron “Um, where’s the velodrome?” Meyer

Speaking of the griper...

Aldag’s decided to use the Lefevere school of motivation on him. Let’s see if it works…or if it’s just meant to be read “And don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”

As we went over the top, Frank Schleck said to me, 'Don't worry, follow my wheel, it'll be OK.' But the first corner, he crashed, he went into a ditch....For two years now I've had to explain why I'm bad at going downhill because of that day.--Robert Gesink

I saw that too... you have to think they don't like Greipel enough to want to keep him...

otherwise, HTC is sending Greipel packing (definitely)

I've adopted the Katusha playbook

for my Giro attack.

Vincenzo Nibali attacks on downhills.

Cunego [supposedly] attacks uphills.

Anders Lund attacks and destroys Thomas Vedel Kvist (Mr. LVR*)

Baden attacks the team Cooke.

Unfortunately, Mikhail Ignatiev is banned from riding with the peloton. He attacks out in front or off the back.

Mauro Santambrogio attacks are now un-suspended.

Bauke Mollema attacks the thought of actually being a contender.

Rigoberto attacks Uran attacks Uran attacks Rigoberto

GH-Team Aero Official Press Release

After the shock that we had last night, GH-Team Aero will not be allowing Franco Pellizotti to take to the start line in the 2010 Giro d’Italia. As an organisation, we believe in transparency and clean sport, which is why we parted ways with Alejandro Valverde at the end of 2009. We tried to Save Ferris, and we have failed.

The result of this is that Jennifer Gray has been suspended and the team will have no GC ambitions for this race. Instead, we will look for stage wins through our trusted riders including:

Yury Trofimov
David Moncoutie
Cameron Meyer
Bauke Mollema
Chris Anker Sorensen

Txeer up.

Could easily see the Shark scoring a stage or so, even if the GC’s beyond him. Same with Freire, if he deosn’t get anything on the flat stages, he capable of making the finale of the harder ones. Moncoutie: hopefully lots of the notable climbers will be going for GC, so the green jersey will be his for the taking. He possibly could finish top ten too.

Greg “put anotha win on tha Baahbie” Henderson (33)

Young guys:
Linus “This is gonna be my breakout” Gerdemann (27)
Ignatas “Just like last year, baby!” Konovalovas (24)
Thomas “I got nothing” Rohregger (27)

Can I ask where Freire (this I know…allergies) Chicchi, Garate, Pauwels, Spilak, Cardoso and Soler are? WTF?…. I mean, even J-Rod.

Soler, Pauwels and J-Rod rode last year. Chicchi and Cardoso would be good in the Giro. So disappointed about Oscarito.
