VDS Smack talk - Giro edition
There has been a smattering of smack talk in various threads, but I thought perhaps we should gather it all in one place. I will head this up, mostly because since the ToC is stealing a bunch of potential GC types from Italy, I figured the Giro was the place to get points this year, and structured my team accordingly. So with no further ado, I present the Echelon of fools Giro 2010 line-up:
Ivan "still smiling" Basso
Carlos "no you're only worth 12 points" Sastre
Bauke "the other other great Dutch hope" Mollema
Chris "I don't need no stinkin' collarbone" Anker Sörensen
Frederik "I swear JV promised me leadership at the Giro" Kessiakoff
Rigoberto "it's my turn" Uran
Eros :get me outta this jersey" Capecchi
Mauro "I was clean all along" Santambrogio
and
Enrico "deal of the century" Gasparotto
If this team doesn't get me above the 300th place mark...I don't know what will...
How do you plan on topping that one?
sigh...

I got Basso, and with Jen Gray gone he’s looking pretty good.
Also, Ale Jet should pull a stage or two.

no problem
I needed a diversion from the doping stories of the day. And I figured that confirming that your week attempt at copying my Giro team would do just fine. Sprinters….pbbbtttttthhhhhhh…I’m saving them for the tour.

How many score in a Giro stage?
Because Weylandt will probably pick up some points for placing if QST are working for him.
GTs go 5 deep on a stage.
So yeah, could be some points there.

Meh
There are five obvious sprinters who could keep Weylandt out of the points. Same prolly goes for my Loddo.
True but I can see them getting some 4th and 5th places so points are points

Thanks, I knew about that site, but I never use it
because I find it visually unappealing. I might start, though: I’m always needing that sort of resource. I’ve been posting all the teams that I’ve seen announced in het ‘Giro Countdown’ fanshot. Have not yet seen: Garmin, Liquigas, A&S, Milram, or a lineup for AG2R without Valjavec. I think those are the only ones.

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
i've no clue wtf's wrong with our delicate flower. :(
i started getting concerned when liquigas stopped racing him after de ronde. the team’s talk about not wanting to tire him ahead of the giro sounded unconvincing at best. i got truly suspicious, though, when he got scratched from the romandie squad. no racing for over a month and then contend in a gt sprint? eh, not likely. i admit that i more than half expected him to surface on the dopers no-longer anonymous list yesterday.
silver lining: he’ll race the tour? (i don’t think he had the tour on his program at the beginning of the season, only the giro and the vuelta.)
No, he wasn't down to do the Tour.
I was kinda pleased about that as it upsets me to see Cav klopting him, the poor wee soul. I’m just weary and sad. He’s so pretty and so little seen :( Perhaps Rory Mason would give us the goss on Twitter….hmm, that’s a plan.
I am coming to terms with the high possibility of me being close to last...

Yeah I don't know about Nibali...
He might not be in shape for a 3-week effort and this might screw up his Tour preparation…
Anyway, La Tete dans le guidon will try to get out of the VDS basement with the Giro, but that’s no easy task !

Lot of respect from everyone here but this is a smackthread so let's break it down, shall we?
Evans –
Sastre – Evans and Sastre, sooo hyped but both Tour-bound. Amazing if even one of them peaks here -prepare for disappointment
Nibali – late substitution, Tour-bound – no points
Gaspa – Burned his matches long ago – no points
Pate – breakaway, beaten in the sprint – how many points for third on a stage again?
Cuesta – best case : does not die of old age in week 2 – no points
Mollema – you’re kidding right?, never delivers – no points
Ignatiev – see Gaspa – no points
You are op de hoek
lets try again
Evans- clearly on form and here to win. Worst case top fat GC placing and a couple strong stage placings
Sastre- form is an enigma but this course was built for him- WC- fat GC points and 1 stage vic
Nibali- WC- top 10 overall and some high stage placings
Gaspa- good for some non winner stage points
Pate- agree
Cuesta- got a good feeling on some light GC points helping deliver Carlos
Mollema- agree
Ignatiev- i think he takes some points out of the funky transitional stages

david ‘bike tossin’ millar
damiano ‘my favourite part is the post-stage interviews’ cunego

The 'Nads are saving themselves
for the Tour, I guess. Fielding four for the Giro, would have been five except for Valjaveck being caught out for “irregularities.”
I’ve always had a soft spot for Karpets. Mainly because he has the most appropriate nickname in the whole peloton, what with that hairdo and all…
Along with a whole lot of other people, I have Szmyd. Do people pick him because of this name? (I do. Same with Fofonov.)
André Grivko, a man to strike terror into the heart of the peloton (NOT), and last but not least…
my ace in the hole, Pablo Lastras Garcia. He needs to sweep up as many points as he can, as I and only two other teams have him. (Hi Fred Marx!)
Nothing is impossible when you work for the circus.
fofonov
he either lives around here (Nice) or has friends and relatives here because his name is painted on the road everywhere! I see it all the time. Maybe it’s just the Paris-Nice route, but … anyway they just paint FOFO.
Guess who spent a whole 18 points on Franco Flippin Pellizotti?!!! BAH.
My VDS season was warming up so nicely until now. Thanks a bunch Franco.
but didn't you see his suspicious
performance in the tour last year???? ;) And Sastre was only 12 pts – although true, perhaps not so high on hottitude. Not that that would influence your picks or anything.
I am guilty of having too much faith! Bah.
He is, I will admit, kinder on the eye than Sastre, but if I were picking on those criteria I’d have gone for Ivan ‘soulful eyes’ Basso ;-)
Paging Phil H.... It's GIRO smack talk time... hello? (prepare yourself for a dudesmack;)
This is Phil H.‘s favorite race right? How can you call this your favorite race and come so ill prepared? What kind of DS would do this? He says he loves the Giro, but where’s his team?

As an organisation, we believe in transparency and clean sport, which is why we parted ways with Alejandro Valverde at the end of 2009. We tried to Save Ferris, and we have failed.
The result of this is that Jennifer Gray has been suspended and the team will have no GC ambitions for this race. Instead, we will look for stage wins through our trusted riders including:
Yury Trofimov
David Moncoutie
Cameron Meyer
Bauke Mollema
Chris Anker Sorensen
well done
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
I can't quite remember my team...
But I’m pretty sure it consists of, among others:
‘fee fi fo fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman’ Greipel
Dan ‘bet your house’Martin
Kamikaze Chris Anker Sorenson
Sylvester ‘if I rode for myself I would drop you all’ Szmyd
Cameron ’why does my bike have brakes now? Myer
and maybe one or two more.
Not great- but not awful either.

Well, that shows how much attention I pay beyond the riders I like or those on my team.

And some others who may stray into the top 5 at some point or another (It’s a long race)
Julian Dean
Chris Sutton
Michael Barry

it's owls of derision really
but their hopelessness justifies the creative licence, I feel ;-)

Txeer up.
Could easily see the Shark scoring a stage or so, even if the GC’s beyond him. Same with Freire, if he deosn’t get anything on the flat stages, he capable of making the finale of the harder ones. Moncoutie: hopefully lots of the notable climbers will be going for GC, so the green jersey will be his for the taking. He possibly could finish top ten too.
txapeau :)

OK - i waited until most people won't read this thread (hopefully)
Franco Pellizotti

(Dear FatManonaBike – only me and you got that double up, well done us!)
Gaspa, Grivko, Cummings, Russ – all carrying bottles
Dear Mr Petacchi – please get me some points – they go down to fifth each stage, you can do it – cos heaven alone only knows where else the points are going come from.
Cummings
is a bit of a specialist in minor Italian one day races (Tre Valle Varesine or whatever) & was absolutely gutted not to get a ride with Barloworld last year. I would be surprised if he hadn’t got a stage or two marked out (I’m not saying he’ll actually do owt like but…)

Best to hope for re Cummings
is 3rd or 4th in a stage in the last half of the race I reckon. Fingers crossed I’m wrong, though, as would like to see better – for him mostl.
Sympathies on yesterday by the way – Blackburn fan here – we know.
I think cummings can do something on a transition stage...
though I am thinking a 2nd or 3rd place out of a break in a sprint
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
Doomed break, more like.
Thanks for the commiserations. Must say I was quite pleased to see your lot had finished off Arsenal though… ;-)

Apparently we bullied Arsenal into submission!
The strange thing about this site is I spent the last ten minutes of the match willing your team to do well as I don’t (virtually – or in real life for that matter) know a Palace fan!
Could be worse...

Yeah...
But as Australia’s first speed skating gold medal proved, sometimes you can get lucky and avoid the crash that takes the rest of the field out.

Rigeberto " Hey why aren’t I doing donkey work for Valverde.. Oh wait this race is in Italy…" Uran Uran
stephen" Nothing to see here" Cummings
Morris " did my best work on stage 4 of the tour of Romandie… sorry for not getting any points though…" Possoni
Riders with a total cost of 7 points!!!
Where is the BCS? why isn’t freaking Kessaikof getting his chance (stupid Dan Martin) ??
Santambrogio you can now race why aren’t you??
Fracking Pellizoti!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing to see here!! Nothing To See Here!!!!
Go on about your business you do not see a grown man lying on the floor crying like a small child!!!
Bye Bye 300’s hello 400’s but wow I just looked at the lantern rouge!!! that is one competitton that seems quite sewn up. Bianchista I am feeling your pain. Losing Pellizoti has hurt you a lot more than it hurt me.

I've certainly got less than what I hoped for. Unless you count age.
Old guys:
Carlos “You seem to be my only hope” Sastre (35)
Gilberto “One win is all I ask” Simoni (38)
David “Où sont moi, ce n’est pas la France” Moncoutie (35)
Greg “put anotha win on tha Baahbie” Henderson (33)
Sylwester "I’ll forever be known as “The Puker”" Szmyd (33)
Young guys:
Linus “This is gonna be my breakout” Gerdemann (27)
Ignatas “Just like last year, baby!” Konovalovas (24)
Thomas “I got nothing” Rohregger (27)
Can I ask where Freire (this I know…allergies) Chicchi, Garate, Pauwels, Spilak, Cardoso and Soler are? WTF?…. I mean, even J-Rod.
Soler, Pauwels and J-Rod rode last year. Chicchi and Cardoso would be good in the Giro. So disappointed about Oscarito.
