2010 National Championships: The Best Results List In Existence

[Update] Bumped up since most of the races are in the books.

We have come to one of my favorite weeks of the year: National Champ week! I love tracking results for dozens of races on that Sunday. I love how unique these races are, teams up to 20 men large or composed of only 1 rider. It's always fun to find out who will be wearing the national kits for the next 12 months. So lets follow the races and list the results here for this next week. Please rec the post so it can stay on the side bar throughout the weekend. The time trials begin on Wednesday while the first road race is on Friday with the most being Sunday. I copied the countries who have races this week from CQ, not every country also has a TT this week.  Please tell me if I have missed a country. Let the action begin!

Canadian nationals are here in Edmonton

… too bad my only opportunity to go on a holiday this summer came at the same time and we won’t be here :-(. They’re using the same course as the 1978 Commonwealth Games, which is similar to the course used for the World Cup/World Championship triathlons held here but with an extra climby bit.

Can someone explain the team aspect to these races

Do the favorites recruit guys to help them? Is it along pro-team alliances? Friendships?

I hate mountain lions. -me

In Sweden pros usually ride for their old clubs from the youth days

and/or their hometown club. Don’t really know how thrilled the domestic riders are to work for a guy who rides with them one day/year? Never heard any complaining about it though.

by Jens on Jun 21, 2010 6:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't think it's a problem at the moment

Except for Thomas Lövkvist. He’s racing for Team Cykelcity, and they’re competetive already without him. Though I can’t find him on the startlist, but it’s from last week so it might be open for additions.

Jonas Ljungblad and Gustav Larsson are the only riders on Hammarö CK, doubt they will give each other that much help. Fredrik Kessiakoff is the only rider on Skara CK.

Southern Hemisphere

It is interesting to find Brazil & Venezuela on the list. One would think that they, like most Southern Hemisphere nations would have their national championships during their summers instead of their “winters”.

Doooh!

I knew that, but didn’t think before I typed…

Of course the part of Brazil that is above the equator is so tropical, that hemisphere doesn’t really matter in regards to this.

A friend in Sao Paolo has been complaining that it is really cold down there now. It was like 60 F the other day; she is getting ready for snow ;-)

by touriste-routier on Jun 21, 2010 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I lived in Benin (West Africa) for awhile

People in my town would have be wrapped up and freezing when it was 80 F. The combination of a breeze and low humidity during a certain season (they have no winter, they just have a dry, breezy season) was just too much for everyone.

If he actually has flu, it can be very debilitating

and would be bad news for his Tour fitness. But what most people call flu usually isn’t (in English, anyway—I have no idea if that’s also true in Spanish).

"i am not able"

is a pitiful translation. “No estoy en condiciones” is obviously “I’m not in condition.” Could be he’s not in condition because of the flu or he’s just not in form.

He's the one who says he has the flu:
“Es una auténtica pena, pero no voy a poder asistir al Campeonato de España porque estoy pasando un pequeño proceso gripal. Habría querido defender el maillot, pero desgraciadamente no estoy en condiciones y contra esto no se puede hacer nada”, dijo ayer Alberto Contador

According to other stories, he started showing symptoms on Saturday. If he’s training through it, he’s either not listening to his doctors or it isn’t really flu—possibly a summer cold or ‘stomach flu’ (which has nothing to do with influenza).

Use Wide format to see table right

Great job! Just a note – if the table looks screwed up – make sure you are in “wide” format for Podium Cafe, which you can find on the upper right of the page under the search box.

On narrow things are all messed up for me.

Why would anyone complain about her being in the peloton? She's inspiring (and ass kicking) - I love her quote at the end!
Longo’s presence in the women’s cycling peloton, whose average age is usually half her own, has on occasion prompted the odd grumble.

However the Frenchwoman known for her no-nonsense attitude has always defended her right to compete, no matter what her age.

That belief was vindicated Thursday, when, asked why her rivals could not match up, she suggested they "hadn’t done enough specific training. I’m sorry to say it, but they need to go back to the drawing board on a few things."

Next year's rule that the top 17 teams in the World Ranking are guaranteed invites to major events is really going to shake things up, isn't it?

I just checked when the Giro team announcement was this year, and it was March 22. If that rule had been in effect this year, they would have had to use the rankings from March 15*. March 15! The season has barely begun. Teams will have to win early and often to get a guaranteed invite, and/or the Giro will have to shift the announcement of teams to later—but not by much, because the teams need time to prepare.

*just possibly March 22, if they had figured every possible contingency beforehand and knew exactly which wildcards they would invite. But either way, it’s waaaaaay early in the season.

But there was talk about the Giro organizers changing the rule

So that the best Italian team automatically gets a Giro invitation the year after. Don’t know where ISD is in the ranking though.

I don't think Nibs even finished the race

disappointing from a guy who had targeted this race and was on some high form.

Dutch Women's RR went to Gunnewijk

Team-mate Vos didn’t contest the sprint in the 2-women breakaway.

Marc de Maar wins TT Dutch Antilles

Up for RR tomorrow. He says he wants to give cycling on the island a boost. I say that’s total bullocks. Only 130.000 people on Curaçao so the potential isn’t enormous. And one would think that something like the Amstel Race Curaçao is already quite a boost for cycling there.

According to CQ, Tomas Gil won the Venezualan champs but that makes no sense since he is listed as Argentinian...

also Vitaly Popkov, is the Ukranian Champion not Uzbekistani

Pooley

Wins the British women’s RR

Guess what? She rode away from everyone, whoda thunk?

Armitstead second, Cooke third, Laws fourth – all the top four bar Cooke ride for Cervelo women’s team – a pretty dominating performance

Terpstra will wear the Dutch jersey in te Tour!

He was in a breakaway of 2 with Rabo-rebel Weening. Moerenhout and Boom almost closed the 40 sec gap in the last 3 km.

Weening didn't make himself popular within the Rabo team

The DS’s are unusually outspoken about the tactical savvy of one of their riders. Normally they never say anything negative but not today.

Rabo should have been able to break Terpstra but instead Weening ‘helped’ him to stay away. Weening on another team soon wouldn’t surprise me…

yay Astana. Btw I haven’t seen a single RS rider contest a national championship. Pretty lame if they didn’t allow their riders to(of course US nats they surely will be there).
