Contador Interview: "Radio Shack Has The Superior Team"

The head games begin. From  AS.com

[Q]  . . Your team is not as potent as last year's Astana team:

Contador: That is undeniable. Our team is not at the same level as Radio Shack. We're not at the same level as Radio Shack or Saxo Bank.On the other hand, my teammates are committed to the same goals. That is important too, although it is clear that others will have to take charge of the peloton, although my team can to a certain extent.

[Q]: Astana can not control the race?

Contador: I think no team can control the Tour from beginning to end. It's impossible to control all the circumstances. My team is limited, but I am very comfortable because I have done everything possible to be in the best possible condition for the Tour. There are other riders who need to win more than I do. There is only one Tour winner. Losing is normal. The hard part is winning.

[Q]: What is clear is that you will have no problem getting to the hotel?

Contador: Yes, I will be more comfortable and I can relax.  Also, I can ride the race in a way that is advantageous to me, as I choose.

More swipes at The Shack, Armstrong and Bruyneel, with much egging on by the interviewer, on the flip.

Star-divide

[Q]: Last year, Armstrong was in charge, right?

Contador: The team time trial gave the team various options. and the general interests were defended. All options were defended .I would have preferred a faster pace. But the result was good.

[Q]: Radio Shack has a great team.

Contador: The best at the Tour, with Saxo.  RadioShack not only has great riders, they also are very experienced.. There are moments, such as at the last stage, when the team passes to be a second consideration. But there is no doubt that Armstrong starts with an impressive advantage.

[Q]: Armstrong is the one to fear though?

Contador: Of course. He is the boss and the team will work precisely as he dictates. If it does not work out,.  then they can use  Leipheimer or Klöden as options .But clearly Armstrong is the most dangerous because the object of the team is to get him the victory.

[Q]: Do you see Armstrong winning the Tour?

Contador: He is a clear candidate. Last year he was third. He has great experienced and knows how to capitalize on his opportunities and in the Tour of Switzerland he demonstrated good form.

[Q] Leipheimer and Klöden seem to be at a lower level this year?

Contador: When you get to the Tour, the situation is much different. In fact, during the Tour people ride into form.. The final time trial is very favorable to  Leipheimer if he is in contention then.

[Q]: Who is the biggest threat to you?

Contador: Based on last year, the most dangerous rival I have is Andy Schleck. But this year there are more contenders than ever. . . . More than half of the teams have contenders. Armstrong, Leipheimer, Klöden, Andy and Frank Schleck, Basso, Kreuziger, Sastre, Menchov, Gesink, Evans, Wiggins And I am sure I have forgotten a few.

[Q] And the course? You like it more or less than the 2009 course?

Contador: It depends. I think not too many people realize how difficult the first week will be. There will be multiple days of danger with tremendous tension and fear of falls and crashes. And then there is the cobbles stage, where a fall could eliminate you. You will have to try and use as little energy as possible because it all adds up.. I am conscience that these stages can be more difficult than Tourmalet.

Q: And later in the race?

Contador: I like it after the first week. The Alps will be about wearing down rather than selection. The most difficult stage will be  la Madeleine, but the finish is some distance from the summit.

Q: And the Pyrenees?

Contador: There no one will be able to hide. They are very difficult from the first day. Pailheres  is like Tourmalet, with the difference being at the bottom..

¿Q: And the long final time trial?

Contador: We'll have to see. Last year [Annecy] was long and it went well for me.. It can go well or poorly for me. it depends on how I stand when we get there.. If, for example, I am trailing Andy Schleck, it is to my advantage that it is long.

Psss your review goes to nationalreview.com ;)

thanks for the translation(if it was yours). I don’t see any swipes at Lance though, I think he is quite respectful in the answers and probably is holding back his true feeling a bit. Smart move, while I like that Bert isn’t scared to stand up to Lance and his clique I also think it isn’t smart to give someone as competitive as Lance some bulletin material.

Thanks

A few more Q & A in the original http://www.as.com/ciclismo/articulo/equipo-armstrong-parte-gran-ventaja/daicic/20100626dasdaicic_1/Tes

- How is your form compared to your two victories in 2007 and 2009?
My weight is the same: 62 kg (height 1.76 m). And the physical condition is very good. But it is difficult to know if I am better or worse than previous years. I had a little bout of constipation that prevented me to perform the test to verify it. But I am relaxed. I know that that was just one day and I have time to get good in the Tour. I think I can reach a higher level than last year. I hope so.

- Will you ride the Vuelta?
It depends on many factors, not only on my Tour result, which will be important. But also we will have to see how the physical condition of the team is to do the Vuelta after Giro and Tour. I would very much like to ride it again. If possible, I would like to repeat it another year. [Not sure about the meaning of that last sentence: “Si pudiera, me gustaría que lo repitiesen otro año.”]

- Do you already know for which team you will ride next year?
No. There are several teams interested, including Astana. But now I have to concentrate on the Tour. I will worry about it later.

Ceci n'est pas une signature.

Finishing climb of the penultimate stage

should be a great battle if the GC is still close.

Yes Alberto

push the pressure to Lance, excellent move. He’s clearly trying to get himself as far off the radar as he can possibly be for a defending champ. I love the mind games, even if they don’t mean too much right now.

"Do you already know for which team you will ride next year?"

I was wondering if this subject was going to come up for Contador before or during the Tour. I don’t think that was his best answer. I don’t think AC should give Astana anything but encouragement and the “all is good here” answer. Wouldn’t want to open the door for lack of support.

This is a nice inverview. Thanks your efforts.

It’s hard not to like Alberto – okay the pistol thing, but nice how he identifies Lance straight out and defers to Thee Shack team strength – Alberto can talk the talk, too.

Thinkin’ Vino will be a great ‘pure slave’ for Alberto.

I think Vino

and how / what he does will be one of the most interesting stories of Le Tour

very logical points

which is why they do not apply to Vino.

by R Mc on Jun 27, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Especially if Astana embraces them. I think it will be to Contador’s benefit if everyone expects that any move by Vino is him going for self. It gives credence to the move, much more so than say if Tiralongo goes off on an attack (most won’t respond), and so hopefully it draws out/forces someone else to work to bring him back and set up the AC counter-attack.

Of course that assumes Vino has recovered from the Giro.

Pereiro ain't riding the Tour

Kindof surprised by that. Not because of Pereiro himself. But I thought the whole reason he joined Astana was to support Contador in the Tour.

by ncrow on Jun 27, 2010 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

He has had a nothing year.

Only eclipsed by the nothing year of Allan Davis. Hopefully he has motivation for the Vuelta. Otherwise, I suspect he retires at the end of the year and that’s it for his career.

by MambaFan on Jun 27, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I say 95% chance he retires.

Outside of Contador, Astana didn’t even want him. They tried to force him to take a pay cut after they signed him, but the UCI made them pay him.

But I am still surprised he ain’t riding. I know he’s done nothing all year. But his job was to domestique for Contador; not to produce results. He’s been training with Contador half the time.

by ncrow on Jun 27, 2010 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

yup I'm surprised at this too,

this was the sole reason they signed him.

Didn't he break his wrist a few weeks ago...or do I have the wrong Astani?
