A Tour de France Podium Prognostication/Place Your Bets
Hold your stats you math geeks "Stats lie, yo!" While the numbers game is impressive and entertaining to a point, it is not as reliable as a 'good eye' when dealing with athletic performance. The athlete's will certainly be playing with numbers of their own while building their form, but they know all too well that it doesn't mean a whole lot when it comes to race day- or twenty of them.
So I'm pulling guesses out of the gut, or something that rhymes with that. This prognostication of how a few certain GC contenders are going to do at the Tour is based almost entirely on observation and 'feel'. Some guys are harder to read than others, leaving us with that dreaded uncertainty, "Can't you guys all just tell us honestly how you feel?, enough with the mind games."
Polemica abounds on the jump: Tread cautiously here if you have a thing for numbers, a weak constitution, are easily offended by opinions, your VDS hopes lie on Contador, or you're a card carrying member of ELPMO. If you dare to tread on this thread, then let your opinions hang out but keep your privates tucked safely away. No way can this not turn into a "My GC guy can beat your GC guy", so give your best smack talk. Just as surely as your patience is going to be tested as punches are thrown, check your low blows, because the banhammer is out there lingering in virtual reality somewhere. Objectivity and subjectivity will no doubt get blurred, as we are human beings talking about human beings and their capabilities.
So Many Contenders, So Few Podium Steps
Alberto Contador is not going to win, but he may just podium. The first week will cut him down to size, Vino will be left standing, and Astana will look to the future without El Pistolero and to the coming Kazach Hedgemony. That's all you need to know really, because anything less than a win for the body-that's-too-small-for-his-head Spaniard means that he lost. Sure you might counter that AC looks good on paper going into the Tour, but he tried his ass off to win the Dauphine aaaaaaand... lost. He's being brought down by a weakened immune system, and well, it's just a bad year out there for some allegy sufferers. Don't fear those of you who bought Contador, he'll still reward your buying price with a win at that little shit three week Spanish race.
Cadel Evans is going to Podium. He's going to laugh (a little inward Aussie laugh) at those who struggle in the first week. He's going to ride up front and ride the colors off the rainbow stripes everyday in the mountains (don't worry, he'll have plenty of jerseys). He is a new man this year, more confident and relaxed, and that leads to some excellent deep recovery sleep every night. This man will also finish the year as the highest ranking rider having worn the WC colors like few riders ever have.
Welcome the new King of England Bradley Wiggins. New Team Sky knows what they are doing with their athlete's performance preparation. They started off the year strong but tactically off. And while they wanted to come out strong and put in strong showings throughout the season which they did, they have really been planning all along for the big dance. Brad is ridiculously fit and his planning and preparation has been disciplined and methodical on a new level towards perfection. He could be the one to take the top step. Most everyone has a wait and see attitude with Wiggins this year because those damn stats are missing. I call that kind of sitting on the fence "chicken shit". Some think Brad needs to back up last year's 4th place by producing another podium threatening performance this year before they lay any money down, well you can't make any real money gambling that way chicken shits. But last year did come as a surprise to him and everyone, but don't make the mistake of looking at it as a fluke. He may be the one to prevent Alberto and all the others from clawing their way back onto the podium.
Basso/Kreuziger make up my question mark duo. Both will make top 10, and one will be top 5 or podium, their fate lies in Wiggins legs. My bet is that Basso is continuing his steady comeback and will ride with similar or better form than he did at the Giro and be the one with the better result. You might ask, "Well then why can't Basso win if he rides like he did at the Giro?" please, this is the Tour de France, not some three week shit race in Italy.
The Schlecks of the Frank and Andy variety. No question but Frank will turn out to be the leader this year. I think he is coming into the form of his career, but it will wane just a little too soon and the final ITT will be his downfall. This Tour will be disheartening after the announcement of Team Schleck/Lux.
Menchov/Gesink and Rabobank are good at handling hardship.
And hopefully Sastre can stay sober and out of the tabloids, being the wild and crazy guy he is.
So there you have the short list of the many many GC contenders... Oh wait, I forgot to mention one other rider.
Yes Lance Armstrong will win the Tour. This isn't a claim I make lightheartedly either. He's back. No you knuckleheads, not back to his legendary unbeatable form, but good enough. Last year I was just hopeful, but in the end I was impressed with 3rd overall, and more and more impressed as time passed. Coming into this year's Tour with things the way they should be with LA and AC separated, no one should be so insulting to suggest that Radio Shack should ride for someone other than Lance, but that's just the sort of stupid thing that hateful detractors say. Fortunately, The Podium Cafe is a much more cycling intelligent crowd and a somewhat pro Lance crowd, where almost every one pretty much agrees that Lance has earned the respect that he has around the world both on and off the bike. Lance hasn't admitted the faults of his training last year, but then, it was seriously interrupted and he also considered not continuing with his comeback. His preparation hasn't been interrupted that much this year, andhe has brought his latter Tour preparation to Europe as opposed to riding with some buds up in Aspen. His ITT is lacking, but he knows this and will manage a buffer between his rivals before that stage comes. At the end of this Tour, the next conspiracy theory will be that Lance and Jani Brajkovic switched identities.
So what do we have here:
1st Lance Armstrong
2nd Bradley Wiggins
3rd Cadel Evans
4th Ivan Basso
5th Frank Schleck

The "New" Evans
With his new found maturity and a BMC team that will prove far stronger than being predicted here in the PC, it is the ex-whiners year. Wiggo will likely implode/explode to some extent, that is a boatload of pressure he has got to be under that Evans does not have. Lance and his team will be extremely tough and he had his race face on in the TdS, if you didn’t notice, and they will bring it. Andy has been a puzzle this year, but big bro Frank is looking good. And their team is pretty good.
If AC makes it through the first week in good shape, throw above opinion into the trash, even if his team shows wear in the last week.
The puzzle for me is Garmin with the shotgun approach. No consistent help for CVV when things go uphill and Fisher instead of a stage hunter would sure have helped Tyler.
1 – Evans
2 – Frank
3 – Lance
My rain dance and voodoo doll are sure to stop AC in the first week.
If not then in the trash it goes.
LA and company know that week one is crucial and I think they’ll get the job done.
I left CVV off the list on purpose. Garmin has Farrar and they’ll get something from him.
I would support your #1 pick more if my VDS team would also benefit.

My top 3 picks not on my VDS team
My top 4 gc guys on VDS in the Tour; Andy, Kreuziger, TMartin and Lulu, underperformers all VDS point-wise so far this year. Evans’ total points are about the same as all 4 of those guys added together. So if my TdF picks all wash out, maybe I can be happy with my VDS guys.
You mean you don't get VDS points for beating Cancellara, period?
I was pretty sure that tripled VDS points available for a race win.

Just because they make it public
doesn’t make them the only ones to do it….
Not accusing you of this, but one of my pet peeves is the notion that Lance was the first to scout out stages.
I’d figure that teams with the likes of Hincapie, Cancellara, O’Grady etc. to “lead the way” over the cobbles are at a much bigger advantage. Bike set up, what to look out for, how to ride the cobbles etc. You learn this over years, not the one or two recon rides.
"Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill" - Fausto Coppi
My point was nothing to do with scouting stages...although i know Katusha and others have also done that...
I was laughing at the fact that Klodi and no doubt others are horrified by the cobbles.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
sminer may well be right!
I will say this though, I think Astana is going to be stronger than most expect. Especially at the beginning of the race – I have a feeling they’ll be less of a factor later, once they tire out, but by then the race will be won. That’s part of the reason I’m picking Contador (2 Armstrong 3 F Schleck). But an Armstrong win wouldn’t surprise me.
I'm feverished, or the way you want to spell it
adding
everyone talks about how strong Radio Shack is. But what if they’re too strong…i.e. what if Contador calls their bluff, and lets Kloeden or Leipheimer go up the road? Team dynamics-wise, how does that play out for RS? E.g. if Kloeden’s in yellow by a couple of minutes…and gets in a break, with or without Contador…does Armstrong chase? This probably won’t happen (Armstrong looks like the strongest on that team by some margin), and I’m probably overthinking it. And who knows, maybe Armstrong’s the consummate team player. But hey, stranger things…

Radio Shack too strong?
Holy spit, man! Your “what if Contador calls their bluff” scenario has totally spun my head around! That totally negates the point I was fixin’ to make about Radio Shack team strength. Whatever weak game I pretend to have has been derailed. Is Contador/Astana that smart?
Also, as far as rabbits go, I agree with sminer re: Brajkovic up the road. Yes, Levi, Klodi & Horner will be fetching bottles.
Podium:
1- Armstrong
2- Contador
3- Schleck (pick one)

Sminer, have you factored in the distraction factor?
Says here that Radio Shack, and Armstrong in particular, have a bit of a cloud over their collective heads with the Landis investigation picking up steam (see NY Times article posted tonight). At least two of the guys implicated by Landis have talked to the Feds about their past involvement with doping, but declined to give their names for fear of reprisal while at the Tour de France.
That can’t be good for the Team’s focus (see e.g., TOC).
that deserves its own fanshot, no?
Though it sounds like no one has anything to worry about ’til about 2016 ;)

Some general naysaying
Basso— Who was the last person to even semi pull off a Giro/Tour double? Remember Sastre’s and Menchov’s Tour last year? Doubt he’ll be top 5 when all is said and done.
Lance—No longer is a ITT threat and lacks the explosiveness in the mountains. He’s a follower now, which could lead to a decent place but not a win.
Contador is the clear winner here. Best in the mountains and TT for the overall contenders!
I wonder if the lack of Giro/Tour double successes nowadays is due to the lack of blood doping

Think of how much blood an athlete would have to store up for a Giro/Tour double
You would have to get blood drawn for months. Assuming you use your own blood.

Well there you go bringing up the past as if it matters. (kidding... somewhat)
What do you mean by semu pull off a Giro?Tour double? Lance pulled off a 12th and 3rd last year after a considerable layoff. Agree he is not the ITT’ist of old, but he’s no slouch. He will need a lead overall certain rivals going in the ITT. I think he’s going to be very good though in the mountains, very good.
Basso is better than Menchov and Sastre, he’ll be fine, definitely top 10.
AC, thanks for stating the obvious. But he’s going down ayway.

i’d say he is the clear favorite – but not by a mile or anything. Shit happens in these little shit races – any number of folks could win this thing. As AC says, losing is normal, the hard part is winning the thing.
I want Cuddles to win... or Mick Rogers...
failing this, i’d like robbie and stuey to win stages… all the prognostications in the world can’t get me past Bert winning though.

I'd hope Liquigas and Astana have learned their lesson on that game at the Giro
And RS and Saxo would need a much more aggressive strategy than they used last year
I have two prognostications:
One: obviously, Contador will win. Mano a mano, nobody has the juice to beat him.
Two: Not so obviously, but it hit me out of the blue in the middle of a conference presentation this weekend:
Vino will be a better teammate than Armstrong was. He may not podium, but he will contribute more to Alberto’s success than Lance did.
Vlaanderens Mooiste
I think cycling would be terribly boring if it were a matter of just mano a mano.
The beauty of bike racing is the number of elements that come into play, and that the strongest rider doesn’t always win. The beauty of stage racing for me is the all roundedness of it. The Giro displayed some of this to the nth degree this year. Evans was probably the strongest, but Basso was the most patient and calculating.

Staying with the known entities, but with a twist (or two)
1. Contador – not original, but seriously, illness or ill fortune aside, can’t see him being beaten
2. Evans – as someone else said, this man is giving lessons on how to wear the rainbow jersey.
3. Basso – just so that Evans can turn the tables
4. Klodi – someone from RS, and I can’t see Levi leaving Lance’s side, it’s like he’d get lost on the road or something, besides this is about where you’d expect to see Klodi almost regardless of who is on his team
5. Rogers – will lose minutes on one of the big days but will outlast…
6. Wiggo – he had his perfect race last year.
Andy & Frank will succumb to food poisoning after Riis slips something into their breakfast cereal, just out of spite.
Gesink & Menchov – Rabo does what Rabo does, gets close and then drops it I picture the two running into each other during the ITT, crashing each other out as they go for the optimal line through one of the few corners – classic Rabobank…
kreuziger. will be forced to ride for Basso. He will not like it, but there you go.
Sastre will gradually slip out of contention for the GC, slide into contention for the Polka dot and then just slide away to finish outside the top ten.
Lance, will not finish in Paris. He will be seen losing contact with the main bunch and the next we will hear will be a twitpic of him landing in his private jet in Hawaii, bidding farewell to the world of cycling….

people say AC might be derailed by a team which has multiple GC threats because they can attack from far out. Well that wouldn’t be the main guy though so it wouldn’t be Lance…how then does this really help Lance? The team I can see.

Yeah, I am seeing shades of T-Mobile in '04 and '05 with the clusterfuck they had
and how if Armstrong isn’t totally on top of his form, who will be loyal to him and who will try something for themselves and get chased back.

I'm hoping
That if Klodi finds himself in that position (again) he thinks bigger than the previous times and goes for it.
"Age and treachery will overcome youth and skill" - Fausto Coppi
Time and time again Bruyneel has been consistent
His (and Armstrong’s) strategy is to use their team as a blunt weapon, not as a scalpel. Their team protects their leader on the flatter stages, and then sets a punishing pace whenever the road goes up, isolating the main GC contenders and then setting the stage for their leader (Armstrong) to launch a decisive attack (or to follow appropriately once his GC position is secure).
Can anyone really see the likes of Contador being dropped by such a tactic ?
Wiggins, Rogers etal, sure. Evans, Basso, Menchov? Maybe. But nothing has been shown to demonstrate that Contador will be dropped in such a manner.
Indeed if you listen to Vaughter’s recent comments you might think that RS is going to have to soft pedal so as to not lose Lance…

Seeing Bert complained that last years pace was too low..no I don't see him being dropped
in fact if this is true then the Shack may be Bert’s best friend!(oh that would be sweet)

Sweet would be....
Jani marking Bert and Bert dragging Jani into a podium position, and importantly into a leadership role on RS.

that's a very realistic scenario
"It's a lovely thing, feeling that momentum. If you're lucky, it's also about grace." Tim Winton
Given the fact that i like many of the RS riders, i like the idea that there's a post-Armstrong future.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I know.
Seriously who of Armstrong’s Mtn. team has shown that they can match a Contador acceleration?
And then the cherry on top would be Jani pulling the ear piece out and ignoring Bruyneel’s constant calls to come back and pace “the old man”..

maybe in the alps...
jani hasnt proved he can follow bert, or any of the favorites, in week 3. dauphine yes, but then im not really sure how hard they were going at times on the alp. people kept coming back up to them and that is not something you saw in last years tour. we will see…
headwind was on l'alpe

Good idea, will follow up

talking to myself again
actually Rodriguez should probably be here. How does he tt? And what’s his name, that dude from texas – he could land about anywhere if he can get his tting together. No TTT to pull him through this year.
jrod and tt not so much friends

Seems like Brajkovic might turn into the Tondo of this Tour...I think he is getting too hyped up personally
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
I think the analogy you are looking for is Mayo
who people were hailing as a threat to Armstrong after he so impressively won the Dauphine in 2004…and that didn’t happen so much.

2 days to go! Ladies and Gentlemen , only2 days! And this is my vision of the Podium:
1. Alberto "unbeatable/ untouchable " Cantador Velasco!!!
Then far, far .down, after long and hard battle:
2. Andy " not good enough for the top of the podium" Schleck
3. Lance " The Swan song" Armstrong
Oh! Wait this is 2009 podium? Oh well! No changes, sometime is better than changes!
"The structure of our sport needs to change towards a model of other successful professional sports like soccer, tennis, Formula 1," Johan Bruyneel.
"I'm feeling good, so I'm going to go for it!"
These are the last words Riis hears as Jens! decides to force a break. He howls in frustration and sends Matti Breschel up the road to tell him to rein it in. Van Summeren latches on to Jens!’ wheel as he goes by (crafty bugger knows a good thing when he spots it) and then spurs him on by wondering aloud what it takes for a bike race to make a man suffer? Karsten Kroon manages to join in, leaving behind a bewildered Armstrong (who due to age and possible dementia seems to think Kroon is still a teammate), heard to mutter “I can’t Karsten, I’m fucked.”
There’s so much confusion as rumours fly that Ballan made it into the break with Kroon. By the time race radio reports that it was actually Evans wearing a rain jacket to temporarily hide the rainbow the break has put 8 minutes in. Everyone else in the break is told to sit up, but Jens! has pulled the radio from his ear and is pumping his big diesel engine too hard for Breschel to pass the word. Jens! and Kroon drag Cadel to a 14 minute gap on the stage.
The final result in Paris:
1. Contador
2. Gesink (where did that come from!?)
3. Jens!
4. Evans
5. F. Schleck
I'm betting on science to cure all the damage done by my reckless behaviour.
I like your scenario, but no way
does Evans get a 14 minute advantage and not finish on the podium…….
Everything else, completely believable, especially the parts about Jens! There is nothing that man can’t do!

Three words for you re: Evans
Team. Time. Trial.
I tried to dream better for him, but the dude does it tough in the GTs.
