Updates on Marina Romoli
You might remember that Marina Romoli, the 21-year old lead-out rider from Italian pro-team Safi-Pasta Zara was involved in a horrific crash last week. She was riding with her boyfriend Matthew Pelucchi (who rides for the Italian Under 23 national squad) and a friend when a car pulled out in front of her - she went through the side window, and ended up with injuries to her back, needing 500 stitches to have her face reconstructed, and was placed in an artifical coma.
Today she unerwent a 7-hour operation on her back, and doctors are "cautiously optimistic" about her progress (although there are some fears she'll never fully recover) and will be bringing her round tomorrow. More in Safi's update
All my thoughts with her and her family for her recovery.

Thanks for the update.
It seems to be really difficult to tell what progress someone will make following an injury like this, so I really do wish her well.

Marina Romoli’s survived an 8hr operation today, her induced coma will be lifted tomorrow and she will attempt to breathe independently.
Another tweet from Rochelle
Today is Marina’s Birthday, she is now awake & although she is unable to speak at this point, she can hear and comprehend all that is said.
Tuttobici has a longish piece
here which also gives links to her facebook page and a page for messages of support (for those of you who do facebook). Yesterday her parents posted that she was “more awake but still not yet speaking”
How hard is it to not right-hook at that speed???
I’ve been a driver. OK, I understand how someone could be inattentive at low speed, and figure the cyclist they passed a few cars back, is still a few cars back, when in fact they’re in your blind spot. I don’t blame the guy who hooked me at low speed a couple of years ago. But, sheesh, how can you not notice when a bike is flying, that it is flying?!? This isn’t a rant (not mostly, anyway)—I’m plain confused.
Me too
Espeailly when it’s a group of cyclists It was the same with the crash that took out the 5 British cyclists in Belgium. I’ve never driven, but it seems like something that’s a choice rather than an accident, to pull out and chance it
The thing that gets me as well is Italy is a country that knows cyclists ride fast….
