Link fail
Anyway, unbelievable that Saxo Bank had done no recon on the first mid-mountain stage of the Tour… Not surprised they did so poorly today then… Still not sure why they think they’ll beat Contador 1-on-1 but hey, it’s their problem…
Lance did his recon
apparently his new Nike commercial is filmed on last climb from today. I haven’t seen it but assume it shows Les Gorges du Flumen and the Lacets de Septmoncel

Obviously problematic
Just as Im wondering now if it was problematic to leave Gustav Larsson off the team. With Frank gone, and Fuglsang and CAS looking less than stellar, they could’ve used his climbing abilities. It would’ve been ill advised to leave Breschel or OGrady out, but I think Larsson should’ve been there. Of course, if Frank was still in the race, i wouldn’t be so concerned, but now I am.

How many climbing domestiques do they have now?
I don’t know the Saxo Bank lineup well enough.
Also, general question. Are the two Sorensons related?
Fuglsang, CAS and Nicki S are competent climbers
No relation between the Sörensens. It’s one of the most common names in Denmark, not Smith but close.
that kristin armstrong not to be confused with lance's ex-wife, kristin armstrong

aren’t those guys all related too?

O'Grady over Larsson
After the first few days, Gustav has a lot more to offer. And the Swede rode Roubaix this year so it’s not like he can’t be a valuable teammate on the flats.

I would have chosen him over Breschel, but there had to be four Danes in the team... that's the issue.

But Breschel was more or less guaranteed a spot on the team
After last years exclusion. The point is perhaps moot anyway, but there’s a big chance that Breschel would have left the team if he was excluded from the Tour team this year again.

Fair enough... I'm just not sure how useful he is at the Tour, especially when comparing him with Larsson.

CAS looked good... he was there at the end.

great climber
but never has shown the consistency for a GC run. He always has a bad day somewhere, he was near the lanterne rouge until todays stage.

That's because his job, particularly after Frank's demise, is to save himself for the mountains...
O’Grady will be at the back end too, but you’ve seen him every day on the front in the early part of the race. Their standings are irrelevant.

You're such a patient teacher

Are you complimenting me or rolling your eyes at me stating the obvious? ;)

Complimenting
I would never roll my eyes at you.

I know, I wish not to discredit their work.
But a backup GC option is usually a good strategic option, I guess Saxo Bank and Astana are both putting all hope in their leaders, while RS has many cards to play. If it wasnt for the time gains both Andy and alberto got on Lance, The Shack would look good now

well, saxo DID have multiple GC options
but obviously they kinda got busted on stage 3. I’m not sure that they should have tried to have three potential podium finishers just in case one of them had to drop out. (I mean, ok it worked for them in 2008, but also caused a few problems down the road.)
With Frank Saxo was definitely one of the strongest teams, but now they are some way behind Shack and Astana, and probably a few others too. I think Andy is a good enough climber (if he’s in form) to do it alone, but they’re going to have to come up with some new tactics now they don’t have the one-two punch.
Good, you said it for me... :)

We don't know that
His first run at a GC was supposed be this years Giro had he not broken his collarbone. Now he ended up stagehunting and helping Porte instead. I don’t think you get a fair appraisal of GT ability as long as they are helpers. Some days the blow themselves up working, some days they are ordered to softpedal and like in the case of CAS this year some days they give up their bikes to the captain and end up losing chunks of time.
I've become an absolute fan after the Giro, but I think he's done well in the first week here too.

Had a few rough days in Belgium and ended up lanterne rouge
after giving away his bike on the Stockeu . Looked decent enough yesterday. He blogs daily here but I’m not sure how much sense gogletranslate will make of it. His language is ehh colourful (and spiked with regional sayings that don’t translate well
Thanks... love a bit of colourful language :)

i wish to see him compete
but ill wait for that day, he’s still reasonably young. And i must say i feel better about the state of affairs at Saxo with Andy doing well on his own.
