Techs-Mechs: TDF Tech

Obviously for those who know me it felt like Easter in July when the riders embarked on Stage 3 with their cobble machines.  That's the stuff I really love, fat tubies, long chainstays, box rims and all the goodies that make P-R the best race of the year (to tech nerds anyway).  One bike that has interested me quite a bit is the Pinarello KOBH used by Sky.  This is Pinarello's entry into a more comfy century bike joining the likes of the Specialized S-Works Roubaix SL3, Cannondale Synapse and the Cervelo RS.  If marketed correctly, these are really much more useful road rigs for us 9-5 types, who value a little more comfort over hair trigger twitchy road race bikes.  Also, most people would find that riding bigger tires like 24 or 25mm will not cost them any speed but pay huge dividends in keeping you fresh for long efforts.  Ok, back to the race bikes...

Of particular interest is the new Berner designed SRAM rear derailleurs with a 13t upper pulley and a 15t lower pulley.  I have been following this for a few days since this design was showing up on on the Saxo team bikes.  The idea behind it is to provide less drag on the drive train as the more gradual angles of the chain onto the rear sprockets is supposed to be smoother.  Fad or a real breakthrough?  Time will tell.

Mavic newly designed Cosmic Carbon Ultimate's seems to be a very popular wheel choice as well.  I still don't love carbon spokes but some of the earlier issues must have been resolved from their first edition of the R Sys' hollow carbon spokes.  The Carbon Ultimates use a bladed design.  Not for this clydesdale who is currently waiting for a pair of Abrosio Nemesis rims that are on back order, but for the pro's light weight and aero can't be overlooked.

Scott has unveiled it's latest uber light road frame with the Project F01 which is an aero frame designed to compete with similar offerings from Cervelo (who has led this movement for years) and Felt.  It's fair to note that Cav's 2 wins were on the trusty Addict frame.

And finally, BB30 is not a fad...
