Morning!

Got to run some stupid chores before I can come back and get impatient for live video ;)
Sad to report no cycling related dreams last night either.

So Thor's in a spot of bother on his quest to get Green

I think he looks downright dreadful in sprints, so I wonder if he’ll try and get in the break today.

Wide, wide open race today

With the really spiky stuff coming back on Sunday, and the GC table quite spread out, I can’t see Saxo worrying about anyone but the top five in the GC. If they don’t control things too closely at the front, I think we’ll see some big splits.

I like the chances of Kreuzinger, Brajkovic, Gesink and Roche. Light, top class climbers who will be given a bit of leeway to make digs on the last climb.

I’m in a meeting learning about procurement software for the last two hours of the race. I will bring a world of hate into that overheated demonstration suite.

by EdredonBrowny on Jul 16, 2010 6:08 AM EDT reply actions

I hope your'e right about a couple b-list GC'ers making a run for it

And I can see Saxo sitting back, but I don’t see how Albert will contain himself if somebody attacks

I think Albert would be making a mistake

If he doesn’t contain himself. Tomorrow is relatively flat, but Sunday is bloody awful. All the GC-ers had to work pretty hard yesterday to stay at the front in the winds.

Jokes aside

Lance sure seemed to be making a lot of comments early in the season that made it sound like they might be trying to sign Tyler. It would be a good fit for them too.

Yeah, there’s no better place for a sprinter and budding cobbles rider to develop than Johan Bruyneel teams.

A winning american to hold them over until Phinney matures.
Can’t say i disagree with your take on RS.

by Jens on Jul 16, 2010 7:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Taylor Phinney and RS is an interesting question

How far does RS go to support him? I mean, Phinney could be a massive talent and he would need support riders.

Does Bruyneel go outside of his comfort zone and build at least part of a team around Phinney? Or is Phinney on his own?

(All of course, assuming Phinney works out as a pro)

Renshaw has some super harsh words for Garmin this morning
I won’t speak with anyone from Garmin anymore
It’s sad that this is the only way they can try and win races
He’s (Cav) 10 times the sprinter that Tyler Farrar is. I think Farrar is just flapping around the place. The only way they could win is if they take us out. I think that’s the attitude that Garmin has.

I can understand he’s upset. I don’t think it reflects on his class.

by LittleOldLady on Jul 16, 2010 7:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully with time he will become more philosophical about it then...

Because these comments don’t really show a comprehension of his own role in this, and to blame Garmin seems to be missing the point.

but he’s been pushed and battered a bit in the earlier stages and he likely feels they’ve been as guilty (but were smart enough not to be as visible).

Yeah, I get that, but he's implying here,

with “It’s sad that this is the only way they can try and win races” , that Garmin were somehow conspiring in it. Whether he meant it that way or not, it comes across as petty. It’s surely the ASO/officials he should be venting his anger against? I wonder, if the boot had been on the other foot, whether HTC would have appealed against the exclusion of a rival? Maybe they would…but who knows…

Well, Renshaw felt that Dean was trying to take him out

Hence “It’s sad that this is the only way they can try and win races”. If that really was Dean’s intention isn’t necessarily interesting, and it doesn’t necessarily imply equal blame either.

Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...

by TheFigurehead on Jul 16, 2010 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions

It's just the implication...

Like what Garmin did somehow made Renshaw’s actions partially justified…perhaps I should watch it again and concentrate more on Dean, but to me it didn’t look as bad as Renshaw moving into Farrar. Not saying Dean was totally blameless though.

by Albertina on Jul 16, 2010 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions

he wasn't

but renshaw’s actions were far worse. dean’s were what you see in any normal sprint, stuff that goes unpunished 99 times out of 100.

To add to that

(and what makes Renshaw’s/HTC’s complaining ring a bit hollow) it was exactly the kind of thing that Renshaw did in the run-up to Cav’s first win and in the interviews he smilingly wrote it off as “that’s bikeracing”.

don’t think its the first time this tour that a garman has got into Renshaw’s face in the final KM’s so I can understand him feeling that it was a ‘tactic’ being used against him.
His mistake was trying to push back, what he should have done was waited until after the stage and hit dean over the head with his wheel, that’s perfectly acceptable……

by Killbot on Jul 16, 2010 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Can't do that

Still, Vaughters was running around looking for the jury

to make a case for Renshaw to be excluded. Was talking on the phone at the same time and the camera picked up words to the effect of: “If he doesn’t go, we’re stepping out of this race.” Sounded like he was prepared to put quite some pressure on the organisation to get Renshaw excluded.

GB could field a good lead out train - it's the mountains where we struggle

but I don’t think they’ll be allowed a full team, and they’ll probably have to do a lot of work throughout the race

by William H on Jul 16, 2010 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

don;t know about drilled

but there is a heck of a train there…:

  • Millar, Wiggo for controlling the run in
  • Thomas for the final km
  • Ben Swift for lead out
  • Cav to finish off

Off the top of my head, I think perhaps only Oz gets close to that… and they maybe don’t have the finisher unless you say renshaw goes for himself.

Any thoughts?

Me likey this profile

Looks like a mini classic stage. Bumpy enough to be hard to control. Good ending climb to cause GC worries.

Could be fun.

Unless everyone decides to save it for the GC.

For me, this looks like a Schlecklet stage – he seems to like this rolling stuff which ends not in HC – his stage win and LBL are sorta like this? What do we think?

Compared to burning the team

Sure.

Vino’s a good rider. But how far down on GC is he (genuinely dont know)? And can anyone see him getting the the tourmalet unscathed?

I think you say stuff him: we can lose 3+ minutes to him and be fine. Almost think they must be thinking that otherwise they wouldnt have let him go

Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously

by addict on Jul 16, 2010 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

he's 6'31 down

i agree with you, but it’s easy for us to say he won’t make it over the tourmalet. surely being cautious is the best policy? don’t forget hejesdal is in the break, and he’s 5’42 back. i think saxo just want to be in control.

by Ben Shave on Jul 16, 2010 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

YEah - I think stay in control

but don’t burn too much. If he and / or ryder take three minutes or so, let him. Plus that brings him towards podium so some of the other teams will have to start working too.

So my advice for Saxo would be to chill – there’s plenty of room to work in the weekend
