Yeah that's fair enough
I’m having serious i want chocolate-itis and so i’m drinking coffee instead :(
Venga Caisse d'Epargne!
I just had a piece of cake...when it's someone's borthday you can't refuse, right?
That would be rude :P
Nice marmotte
You'll pey the prysh for that later
Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously
Morning!
Got to run some stupid chores before I can come back and get impatient for live video ;)
Sad to report no cycling related dreams last night either.
Venga Caisse d'Epargne!
speak to Bill & Ted
Perhaps they can rustle up some historical personages to help you with your chores.
Worked for them.
So Thor's in a spot of bother on his quest to get Green
I think he looks downright dreadful in sprints, so I wonder if he’ll try and get in the break today.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
Wide, wide open race today
With the really spiky stuff coming back on Sunday, and the GC table quite spread out, I can’t see Saxo worrying about anyone but the top five in the GC. If they don’t control things too closely at the front, I think we’ll see some big splits.
I like the chances of Kreuzinger, Brajkovic, Gesink and Roche. Light, top class climbers who will be given a bit of leeway to make digs on the last climb.
I’m in a meeting learning about procurement software for the last two hours of the race. I will bring a world of hate into that overheated demonstration suite.
I hope your'e right about a couple b-list GC'ers making a run for it
And I can see Saxo sitting back, but I don’t see how Albert will contain himself if somebody attacks
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
I think Albert would be making a mistake
If he doesn’t contain himself. Tomorrow is relatively flat, but Sunday is bloody awful. All the GC-ers had to work pretty hard yesterday to stay at the front in the winds.

Wegman and Boom have had a go
I think we are going to see some decent Ardennes guys trying to get in the break today (+Pineau)
Farrar dropped on the first cat 3
Also McEwen, Klöden and Armstrong. Ehrmm.
Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...
Good question
Not sure if they’re back in the peloton, since Radioshack is chasing.

you're too far away to slap upside the head
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Jokes aside
Lance sure seemed to be making a lot of comments early in the season that made it sound like they might be trying to sign Tyler. It would be a good fit for them too.
Yeah, there’s no better place for a sprinter and budding cobbles rider to develop than Johan Bruyneel teams.
By "them" I mean RS
A winning american to hold them over until Phinney matures.
Can’t say i disagree with your take on RS.
Taylor Phinney and RS is an interesting question
How far does RS go to support him? I mean, Phinney could be a massive talent and he would need support riders.
Does Bruyneel go outside of his comfort zone and build at least part of a team around Phinney? Or is Phinney on his own?
(All of course, assuming Phinney works out as a pro)
If RS is still around
I’m sure they will build around TP. If they are any good at it is another matter.
Wish the video coverage started early today! Seems like an exciting start
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
Wow...wasn't expecting a major split that early!
Starting to feel glad I set the whole stage to record…

Don’t seem to be able to reply today. Obligatory seahorsing. I say conta and andy look for weakness in each other. If one feels he has the legs, he’ll test the other. Off to climb Aubisque, maybe can catch the end in a bar. Happy stage everyone.
I am back. It is very windy, i'm a wimp and i don't like riding in headwinds like this! :/
So, interesting start, is everyone back together now? (Minus any escapees)

Renshaw has some super harsh words for Garmin this morning
I won’t speak with anyone from Garmin anymore
It’s sad that this is the only way they can try and win races
He’s (Cav) 10 times the sprinter that Tyler Farrar is. I think Farrar is just flapping around the place. The only way they could win is if they take us out. I think that’s the attitude that Garmin has.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
he's just been kicked out of the race
I can understand he’s upset. I don’t think it reflects on his class.
That said, I can understand him being narky with Dean, but not Farrar. And neither of them kicked him out.
agree. i honestly think he was sitting at a train station giving the interview via phone
So I can imagine him being upset and saying things he probably doesn’t mean.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
Brian Holm is making the same kind of Garmin remarks before the start today
so I think the sentiment is really there in the HTC team.
Yes, and he is really very very rude in his remarks and tone, sorrry I can not translate. He used the same language yesterday, not nice.
by LittleOldLady on Jul 16, 2010 7:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Hopefully with time he will become more philosophical about it then...
Because these comments don’t really show a comprehension of his own role in this, and to blame Garmin seems to be missing the point.
his comments immediately after the stage were similar
saying something like “of course tyler is complaining, he hasn’t won a tdf stage” if i remember correctly
by quarantanamo on Jul 16, 2010 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions
Don’t he forger, that he was DQ not by Garmin, but by the Race Officials?
Life is not fair! Need proof? Did you see any Vacansoleil Jersey in this year’s TDF?
.
And he was DQ'ed before Garmin could make their complaint
Although, they were on their way to make a complaint…
Not being in the battle, it's hard for me to judge
but he’s been pushed and battered a bit in the earlier stages and he likely feels they’ve been as guilty (but were smart enough not to be as visible).
I’m not nearly teknik enough to judge if he has any legitmate basis to feel this way. But what’s a GT without some polemica.
oh dear
guess that team rivalry is back in a big way

I like rivalries, because i think they make for better racing
But not much of a rivalry when HTC continually wins.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
no, you're right
how about antipathy? where did he say that stuff by the way? if i was the team media manager i’d be keeping a lid on him.

that's a tad petty

I didn't post the full comments, but he was upset because Garmin riders said the DQ was justified and that what Renshaw did was intentional

He felt the TdF is too important to riders, and it was BS that other riders were glad he was leaving

Yeah, I get that, but he's implying here,
with “It’s sad that this is the only way they can try and win races” , that Garmin were somehow conspiring in it. Whether he meant it that way or not, it comes across as petty. It’s surely the ASO/officials he should be venting his anger against? I wonder, if the boot had been on the other foot, whether HTC would have appealed against the exclusion of a rival? Maybe they would…but who knows…
Nice marmotte
Something suggests had this been a role reversal they'd be saying it was justified too
It would have semeed dangerous (the drifting out of line more than the headbutting) to them if it wasn’t them doing it, that’s just human nature.
Venga Caisse d'Epargne!
Inclined to agree, yes, and that's not because I'm being an 'HTC hater'...
…I think it’s most likely that any team would. I’m just weary of trying to express an opinion on this as I have Cav lover friends who might pillory me without listening to what I actually say! So I’ll shut up now ;)
Nice marmotte
Oh i wasn't limiting that to HTC, most teams would
At the end of the day, they’re always going to want their team to stay safe and if they deem another rider to be endangering that, they’re not going to stick up for him as much..
Venga Caisse d'Epargne!
But that refers to Dean's move, no?
Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...
by TheFigurehead on Jul 16, 2010 7:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, Renshaw felt that Dean was trying to take him out
Hence “It’s sad that this is the only way they can try and win races”. If that really was Dean’s intention isn’t necessarily interesting, and it doesn’t necessarily imply equal blame either.
Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...
by TheFigurehead on Jul 16, 2010 7:48 AM EDT up reply actions
True, but it just seems that in the heat of this all, Renshaw/HTC are trying to shift blame.
I personally didn’t see Dean do anything illegal…looked to me like normal lead out train shenanigans.
Nice marmotte
Shift blame, where and when?
Share a bit of the blame is more like it. Because really, Dean tried to cut across Renshaw.
Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...
by TheFigurehead on Jul 16, 2010 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions
It's just the implication...
Like what Garmin did somehow made Renshaw’s actions partially justified…perhaps I should watch it again and concentrate more on Dean, but to me it didn’t look as bad as Renshaw moving into Farrar. Not saying Dean was totally blameless though.
Nice marmotte
he wasn't
but renshaw’s actions were far worse. dean’s were what you see in any normal sprint, stuff that goes unpunished 99 times out of 100.
"I was watching the Tour de France in 2005, just being a fan again. I thought, ‘you're a fucking idiot. You're a bike fan who gets to ride the Tour de France.'"
- david millar
To add to that
(and what makes Renshaw’s/HTC’s complaining ring a bit hollow) it was exactly the kind of thing that Renshaw did in the run-up to Cav’s first win and in the interviews he smilingly wrote it off as “that’s bikeracing”.
yeah, exactly
don’t give it out if you can’t take it
"I was watching the Tour de France in 2005, just being a fan again. I thought, ‘you're a fucking idiot. You're a bike fan who gets to ride the Tour de France.'"

But if Renshaw felt that Dean was trying to take him out
Then his statements about Garmin isn’t totally off base, no? Again, he might be wrong but you can’t really judge what he’s saying afterwards without taking into account his view of the matter.
Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...

not totally off-base, no
just fairly ill-judged, in terms of tone…
"I was watching the Tour de France in 2005, just being a fan again. I thought, ‘you're a fucking idiot. You're a bike fan who gets to ride the Tour de France.'"
- david millar
No.
It’s just that “I’m not talking to them” stuff pisses me off a bit. But then Garmin’s blessed sprint train does a bit too (unpopular opinion, I know).
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
robbie hunter especially
maybe it’s the 140 characters thing, but he just comes across as a douche on twitter.
"I was watching the Tour de France in 2005, just being a fan again. I thought, ‘you're a fucking idiot. You're a bike fan who gets to ride the Tour de France.'"
- david millar
If he really thinks that, then I agree.
Who knows what’s behind his words…we never will. And for the record, I do think the expulsion was probably too harsh, although there are strong arguments both ways.
Nice marmotte
Holm in his description of the HTC-Garmin feud
today says they have had issues since Dean torpedoed Ciolek in a TdF sprint in 2008. (oy)
don’t think its the first time this tour that a garman has got into Renshaw’s face in the final KM’s so I can understand him feeling that it was a ‘tactic’ being used against him.
His mistake was trying to push back, what he should have done was waited until after the stage and hit dean over the head with his wheel, that’s perfectly acceptable……
Actually, thinking about it
in some of Cav’s crashes this year his wheel has appeared to fold/snap quite easily so it might not be the best choice of weapon for an HTC rider either
No, venting anger against a rival makes you sound petty
venting anger against the ASO/officials can keep you out of races.
Still, Vaughters was running around looking for the jury
to make a case for Renshaw to be excluded. Was talking on the phone at the same time and the camera picked up words to the effect of: “If he doesn’t go, we’re stepping out of this race.” Sounded like he was prepared to put quite some pressure on the organisation to get Renshaw excluded.
Ceci n'est pas une signature.
If he was ever going to pull a team...
… it would be this team. Which is broken. Farrar most of the way back, but injured and could do with time off, Vandevelde gone, Miller injured, Ryder (understandably) looking exhausted…
No, he wouldn’t pull the team, but I can believe he meant it at the time.

He wouldn’t want to explain to Garmin and his other sponsors why they’re not on tv every day in the biggest race in the world.
Where did you see JV running around? I haven't seen that video, but would like to

Well, not running per se,
but busily talking on phone and walking around looking for the jury. Was on Belgian & Dutch late night Tour TV shows. Can’t seem to readily find it at http://nos.nl/sport/wielrennen/tour-2010/video-en-audio/ or http://www.sporza.be/cm/sporza/wielrennen/Tour

So, I read up thread that Klöden fell

OK, now that’s funny. I live in northern Virginia and, just after I got up, I thought I felt something rumbling the house. Now I find out, through this chat, that it was an earthquake. Is there nothing you can’t learn at the Podium Cafe by following a Tour de France live race chat?

they’re not quite as mysogynistic as the Vatican seems to be these days

The Vatican allows women into churches, but not women to become priests
And St Andrews don’t allow women to become members. I think it’s fair to say that St Andrews and the Vatican are about equally misogynistic.

Will the Brits
be well drilled as the HTC squad when chasing an escape and leading out a sprint? I think Cav’s success depends on this factor.

GB could field a good lead out train - it's the mountains where we struggle
but I don’t think they’ll be allowed a full team, and they’ll probably have to do a lot of work throughout the race
don;t know about drilled
but there is a heck of a train there…:
- Millar, Wiggo for controlling the run in
- Thomas for the final km
- Ben Swift for lead out
- Cav to finish off
Off the top of my head, I think perhaps only Oz gets close to that… and they maybe don’t have the finisher unless you say renshaw goes for himself.
Any thoughts?
Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously
renshaw vs. cav would be awesome

Looks like a mini classic stage. Bumpy enough to be hard to control. Good ending climb to cause GC worries.
Could be fun.
Unless everyone decides to save it for the GC.

Compared to burning the team
Sure.
Vino’s a good rider. But how far down on GC is he (genuinely dont know)? And can anyone see him getting the the tourmalet unscathed?
I think you say stuff him: we can lose 3+ minutes to him and be fine. Almost think they must be thinking that otherwise they wouldnt have let him go
Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously
he's 6'31 down
i agree with you, but it’s easy for us to say he won’t make it over the tourmalet. surely being cautious is the best policy? don’t forget hejesdal is in the break, and he’s 5’42 back. i think saxo just want to be in control.
"I was watching the Tour de France in 2005, just being a fan again. I thought, ‘you're a fucking idiot. You're a bike fan who gets to ride the Tour de France.'"

YEah - I think stay in control
but don’t burn too much. If he and / or ryder take three minutes or so, let him. Plus that brings him towards podium so some of the other teams will have to start working too.
So my advice for Saxo would be to chill – there’s plenty of room to work in the weekend

said it was nearly 3k and steep. He said it’s hard enough to hurt people who ride like him, so that’s why he said his goal was to stick with menchov and sanchez, who’s riding style more matches his steady pace…

Levi is under no illusions that he is as explosive as Bert and Andy, so why not peg your wheel to a group that you can work with and limit gaps. not exciting, but smart
