If the break stays away with the current four leaders, who wins?

I think Vino, Ryder, Vasil and Kloden.

Ardoissier, actually. :-) Hi, folks, whaassup? Checking in from work....

I made the incredible mistake of taking Wednesday off as a vacation day to watch the race (which was beautiful and peaceful and made me sleepy and happy) instead of today.

If I remember this correctly, watch the background of the last climb into Mende, because it’s long and straight, and you can actually see the verical climb that the course has taken up to the airport. It was very cool. (Can’t wait to watch this one tonight!)

correctly. It’s the stretch where Axel Merckx got thrashed by ? (can’t remember at this point in time) about 5-6 years ago.

by TheFigurehead on Jul 16, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

can’t tell if this is tongue in cheek, but I think Vino realizes he’s not a contender for overall, and realizes that the best thing for the team is Contador winning. I think most of his attacks have been well calculated – hell, he even waited for Contador on one of the Alps days. Good, solid attacks either to break up the pace or put pressure on rivals (in mountains), or get a stage win on a more classics-type stage like this.

did his teammate need to attack him

Rodriguez wasn’t a threat, 40 secs is not too much time, not enough time to need to get it back on Stage 12. Vino could have won with Rodriguez, Contador just showed nationality trumps team pride, he’s shown it before.

"You know if there's any contact at all Cristiano Ronaldo's gonna go down...maybe even just a puff of wind"

by agl on Jul 16, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I think I disagree

Schleck is strong, need to take time from him when you can. Hopefully Vino understands that…if you’re Contador, you can’t just sit there when you know you can get sec.s on your closest rival. Schleck is so strong, need every second on him you can get.

I'm feverished, or the way you want to spell it

by plinytheelder on Jul 16, 2010 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I think he needs to let his teammate win

for morale sake. i think this gives vino reason not to work for contador. Its one thing if Andy drops or if andy attacks. get a gap or stop a gap, but to attack a teammate when hes so damn close, when he did alot of work all day. The breakaway should have gotten some love. if contador has to jump there, then the least he could do is win the stage or make it look like hes trying to win the stage.

"You know if there's any contact at all Cristiano Ronaldo's gonna go down...maybe even just a puff of wind"

by agl on Jul 16, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I see your point

but I don’t think it’s a question of “letting teammate win” – it’s not like Contador attacked alone. He saw Rodriguez go, got his wheel, saw how close everyone was, saw he could take time on Schleck, and saw that Vinokourov, probably cooked, was in no way a sure bet for the win. I think the sec.s over Schleck trump the maybe win for yoru teammate. Take what’s sure, and take GC over a maybe stage.

I'm feverished, or the way you want to spell it

by plinytheelder on Jul 16, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Vino had an opportunity to win, that is what Alberto can afford to give him.

Once he had a gap on Andy, no power in the ’verse could keep him from driving all the way to the line.

Unless you're winning by a massive margin

your obligation, as the team’s GC hope, is to pile up time where you can. No way should AC have declined a chance to put more time into Andy. In any event, it’s academic – JRod’s demonstration that he could stay with AC when Vino couldn’t = demonstration that JRod would have taken stage anyway. No sale.

On your typical team yes

I dont consider Astana a typical team. I think the Kazakhstan factor has to be considered. contador should remember who sponsors his team, and should try not to make unnecessary moves that could potentially piss them off. We’ve seen so many times Contador crossing team lines to help his countrymen, while hurting his own teams chances. I don’t like that at all. Not one bit. Contador should have at least pretended to care, pretended to let vino help him, instead of completely ignoring him once they caught. a pat on the back, a simple stay on the wheel for a little bit would have made that better. Nothing about what happened there gave me the feeling that he cared about his team there. Ill pull out an armstrong quote and say “alot to learn”

"You know if there's any contact at all Cristiano Ronaldo's gonna go down...maybe even just a puff of wind"

what on earth are you talking about?

when has he helped his countrymen while hurting his teams chances?

by Bruce Suomi on Jul 16, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Is this the worlds?

for where your team comes means nothing in the pros. Astana should remember that the guy earning them their most money could have easily left after last year or after this and seems to be loyal to them. So what if Vino is Kazakh, this is the biggest race in the world and not some criterium.

when he saw he gapped Andy then he had to try to pull and put time in him. No one will remember who won stage 12 of the Tour next year but we sure as hell will know who is defending champ. Astana has its priorities straight and that is GC>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>stage win. Vino needs to understand this or retire.

Maybe Andy didnt have the legs today

people gave Contador a break when he had a bad day and lost ten seconds. Andy did the same thing, and suddenly its contador’s race to win. Maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt, contador could be the one wit the bad day, in a bigger stage than this. this was nothing, if andy was to have a bad day, this was the day to have it.
