Stage Predictor Game: Tour(malet) decider(stage 17)
The final mountain stage of the Tour is also the most important and toughest. For only the second time in Tour history a stage finishes on top of the famous Tourmalet. Fireworks are a guarantee
Profile:
Map:
Climb Details:
- Km 13.5 - Côte de Renoir - 2.2 km climb to 6 % - Category 4
- Km 56.5 - Col de Marie-Blanque - 9.3 km climb to 7.6 % - Category 1
- Km 117.5 - Col du Soulor (D 126-D 918) - 11.9 km climb to 7.8 % - Category 1
- Km 174.0 - COL DU TOURMALET (Souvenir Henri Desgrange) - 18.6 km climb to 7.5 % - Category H
Final Climb:
What Christian Prudhomme says:
After the second rest day in Pau, the riders will set out for their final battle. Well, on the face of it at least… Last year, on Mont Ventoux, what was expected to be all out combat ended up as a damp squib, with all the pretenders waiting for the others to make a move. On this stage, perhaps there will be struggle for the top if Contator is in second place with 30 seconds to make up, but if he has a five minute lead on the rest, then it is as good as over. Following the Marie-Blanque climb, we will head back down into the valley. After only three kilometres of flat, we will immediately get to grips with the Soulor, a long, long, long climb, almost 25-kilometres long! The Aubisque pass is just next to it, then the riders will head down before tackling the Tourmalet pass. At the highest point of this Tour, the Henri-Desgrange memorial trophy will be awarded.

Andy attacks and slows repeatedly and therefore Sammy and Mench come back and sprint for the win.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but Samu need not a little push, but rather vicious, teeth showing, blood thirsty guard dog on his rear wheel, because it is where Menshov planning comfortably sit all the way up to the finish line.

hmmm
do you not think Contador will want to win the stage just so that he can say he’s still the better climber & that he hasn’t had to rely on a) a bit of chance & b) the TT? I’m not saying he will win, just that I think he will want to win?
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
maybe he gifts it as his 'sorry for attacking you' present
who knows, maybe he gives him 10 seconds and another yellow jersey so he can have some more glory before he murders him in the time trial.
"You know if there's any contact at all Cristiano Ronaldo's gonna go down...maybe even just a puff of wind"
Risky...
& then if anyone suspects he’s gifted it poor Andy will have been undermined twice over. I think Conta has to just race it tomorrow. & hope no one’s chain comes off.

Schleck in yellow
1. Charteau (KOM still up for grabs, don’t forget the early break)
2. Schleck (Got the fire in his belly)
3. Contador (Beatable this year on the climbs, but hopefully smart enough not to blow himself up to just prove a point)
Contador has most of the stratgic options and can ride Andy’s or Sanchez’s or Menchov’s wheel. Andy HAS to do something, he could end up a lot worse than 2nd depending on how things work out.
I expect some lights out, on the rivet racing, though, and AC and AS could be within one last acceleration of their limit. If they exceed that threshold either one could lose a huge amount of time.
AC basically needs to ride back in response to AS’s attacks for the most part, i.e., ride smart rather than with his heart, slow and steady wins the race. We’ll see if he has still that unmatchable ability to accelerate and accelerate again.
AS needs to destroy everybody (without destroying himself) none of this shadow AC, play mind games BS. Tomorrow’s the big day.
I’ve been stressing about this all day… and have been in post Tour withdrawal already…Can’t wait for my next Tour “fix!”
