Stage 17 Preview - A Tourmalet Mountain Top Finish!
Above: Pic du Midi de Bigorre above the climb to Tourmalet
A Col du Tourmalet mountain top finish? I must have died and gone to cycling heaven. Yes, it is the Queen stage of the 2010 Tour de France. Do not miss this.
One of the most unfortunate things about cycling long distances in France is the number of signs that yell "PAIN" - Tim Moore in "French Revolutions."
See Ted's route map here.
After the jump, let's look at the stage in more detail.
How's that for a stage profile? Can Andy attack Alberto? Will Moreau take Polka Dots. The answer may depend on which rider most enjoys riding in the rain. The forecast is for wet.
Before the 3 main climbs, the route climbs the category 4 Cote de Renoir. Expect some good road painting here.
Let's review the three main climbs of the day:
#1 Col de Marie-Blanque
Ascent: 815 metres @ 7.4% average
This is the 14th hardest climb in the Tour according to our climb rankings - see here.
This is the shorter, steeper side of Marie-Blanque. A tough start to the day.
Obscure Fact: Marie-Blanque is a relatively low Col? Where are the trees? Many were cleared to build 18th century French war ships.
Unlike stage many of the Pyrénées climbs that regularly appear, Marie-Blanque is relatively new to the Tour, first appearing in 1978.
That year the Belgian Michel Pollentier was first over the top. While in Yellow, a few stages later, Pollentier was kicked out of the Tour when his rubber bladder with a fraudulent urine sample was discovered at doping controls. Oops.
In the 1989 Tour, Laurent Fignon finally got Greg Lemond to agree to share the work at the front on Marie-Blanque. But only briefly. Fignon went on to attack the "suceur de roue" (wheelsucker) in the press at the end of the stage. Lemond, of course, got the last laugh: winning the GC by 8 seconds.
#2 Col du Soulor
Ascent: 928 metres @ 7.8% average
This is the 7th hardest climb in the Tour.
Col du Soulor makes frequent appearances in the Tour. Almost always as part of the east-west ascent (or west-east descent) of Col d'Aubisque - for example in Tuesday's stage. If you have cycled in the Pyrénées you probably know Soulor, but I'd guess you haven't ridden today's version.
Stage 17 is taking a lessor known, very quiet, very scenic route from the north - it's also steeper than the standard Soulor. The riders will be faced with a perfect view of Cirque du Litor while climbing, but at the top will turn left for the Tourmalet instead of right for Aubisque.
Don't tell Megabeth but the restaurant at the top serves fresh agneau (lamb):
#3 Col du Tourmalet - West side
Ascent: 1395 metres @ 7.5% average
This is the hardest climb in the 2010 Tour.
This stage celebrates the 100 year anniversary since the first appearance of Tourmalet in the Tour de France. It has appeared over 70 times, but this will be only the second mountain top finish here. The first, in 1974, was won by Jean-Pierre Danguillaume.
As I frequently say, for me this is the more beautiful side of Tourmalet (the ugly La Mongie ski station scarring the other side). After passing Barèges - 10 kms from the summit - there are no more towns. Just wonderful views, especially of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre.
The Pic du Midi is accessible all year by Cable Car from La Mongie. The distinctive white buildings on top include an observatory with night time star viewings open to the public. As a friend proved last year, for the brave, it is accessible by mountain bike.
The last hairpin-filled stretch to the Col is on a tight cliff road. The top has very little room. If you are going to watch in person and want to be at or near the summit, leave very early. It will be bedlam and access soon blocked by the gendarmes.
Trivia: Stage 16 had the Jacques Goddet prize. His statue is at top of Tourmalet. Today the winner receives the Henri Desgranges award. Which famous Col has a monument to Desgranges?
Sadly, I don't have any pictures of the Géant du Tourmalet statue at the top, as when I was here it was too early in the season. For the last 11 years, hundreds of cyclists accompany the statue in a special event as it is driven up to the top. How fun is that? Many of the cyclists wearing vintage cycling gear. This year's edition had a special guest: Bernard Hinault!
And the start of the event down low? The Laurent Fignon Cycling Centre.
Here's a photo from two friends of mine:
The Badger's thoughts: "It's most of all a climb very demanding, very testing. Probably one of the hardest in the Pyrénées, if not the hardest." Sounds good to me.
Enjoy the stage.

I'm excited. Did I mention that I'm excited? Well I am.
And I have booked the afternoon off work so not even a failing internet connection (see yesterday) can prevent me from watching this. Rain you say? If the helicopter is grounded there will be the mother of all tantrums going on in London.
Nice marmotte
nah
I ride up mountains all the time and my old legs need the easy gear.
Going down, gravity gives me more speed than I need. :)

I’ve been called a nobody, maybe he was referring to me. But if only i had a euro for everytime i passed a guy going up a mountain riding his compact …
As for weather, very low clouds today and supposed to be worse tmorrow

Will, i ride a triple, i am a wimp. They are talking serious rain tomorrow. But yeah, Hautacam or maybe that north side of Soulor today. Need to get going. Got distracted by the possibility of buying a mobile home here in this camping.

So will it be a day for a hardened campaigner... like Vino?

Quick Jens... can you hear that aria playing over and over? The record's broken :)

Looks to me like you could raise your saddle a few mm's and slide your feet back on the pedals a bit.
Otherwise your form looks excellent.

I sure hope it rains!
If it rains the potential for an epic event goes way up.
I could see if it was raining Vino and Hesjedal attacking on the Soulor as they watch all those stick-boys around them shiver like little dogs.
Ok, ok; I Vino would proably attack on the Soulor regrdless of the weather.
Climbing in the rain is the best (for me anyway)
keeps the engine cooled.

+1 great stuff
that young boy riding with AC looks so excited/nervous.
I hope he didn’t bonk on Marie-Blanque

If I could caption the final pic
it would say:

Good to see the Western side of the Tourmalet back in the race
From what i’ve heard it may be slightly easier than the La Mongie side, but the final couple of kilometers are brutal and could be the lauching pad for an attack from Schleck….or Alberto. I have a feeling Alberto may try and turn the tables on Schleck tomorrow and prove that he’s still the superior climber.
yes, the difficulty is debatable
the other – east side – definitely has longer steep stretches. But this west side climbs 150 metres (500 feet more) AND unlike the East side (when it comes from Aspin) – BEFORE the start of the climb it is uphill for several kms.
Look at the profile above and see that they will climb 240 metres (800 feet) before Luz-St-Saveur. At race pace this may hurt a little more.

Seems like the Western side isn't featured as much as the La Mongie side
The ‘08, ’03 and ’99 tours all featured the La Mongie side as part of the race itinerary, and I believe you’d have to go all the way back to 1995 or 1991 for the last time the race came up the western side.
yes great point.
and as I said, I think it’s the more beautiful side.
Also, I think in 2002 Armstrong won but at La Mongie (which excludes maybe the best part of the east side).
moo
Not sure if you've heard of it
But there’s this really cool cycling site in French called memoire-du-cyclisme, it has a record of the race itinerary used every year plus a history of all the winners in the various competitions.
Apparently the western side was used in 2006 but it came very early on in the race and probably didn’t make much of an impact. So we’re going back almost 20 years to when it had any real impact on the race. Can’t wait for tomorrow. :)
I actually just posted a link to that site
in a fanshot the other day. Totally agree, amazing site.
They have stage result summaries for a century. In other words you can wonder what happened on stage xyz in year xyz and there is a nice summary. And lots of other great stuff. That site owner is a dedicated fan.

There is also a site devoted entirely to the history of the Tour.

Hours of entertainment :D
la mongie in 04 as well
1 Basso
2 Armstrong
3 Kloden
5 Sastre
7 Menchov
maybe not this side
The climb from St.Saveur
In my experience (6 times eastern side, 4 times western side) the western side is more difficult, the middle section of the climb has a few long straight sections that are really demoralizing and the top is more exposed, so if there’s a head wind, it’s trouble…

Love The Preview - Gret Work
I was in a meeting with an associate who also rides. In the middle of our technical discussion he urged ’ Can you solve this please? I am in a hurry The Tour de France has already started on TV".
I dont know if he’s just lazy or he has no idea today is a rest day!!!!
If I wanted to get shit small wins, I'd race shit small races (Cavendish on Greipel)
Yesterday the internet was down at work so I was following the Tour on Twitter via my phone.
At about 16:30, I had a phonecall from my boss:
Boss: “Can I ask you a totally non-professional question?” (Albertina quivers, thinking she has done something wrong)
Albertina: “er, yes…”
Boss: “What happened in the Tour?”
> Albertina uses work time, totally legitimately, to scour Twitter for all results/time gaps before writing an essay to boss via email about the stage and all the possible permutations.
Nice marmotte
That is so funny. My boss thinks that I must be a fan of LA just because I am a cycling fan.

Bah...lots of people think like that.
Many people assume I’m a Cav fan just because I’m British (bah)

OK no-one has attempted my trivia
question above. First person to answer I will mail a cheap (but very fun) Polka-dot cap from the Tour de France pre-race parade.
Only answer if you want the cap ;)

Ah-hah! Now we know the secret to your polite and kind manner. Unfortunately mdm yeehoo does not read my posts (she is smart).
And +1 to the fantastic job on the tour this year.

Me too, that profile hurts my legs and its just a bit of yellow on my screen.
I told my boss I was going to be late to work and asked my wife to deliver ALL the kids, everywhere, tomorrow morning for me and to try not to talk to me in the morning.
( She’s a good woman, She understands :) )
