Schleck and Contador share the spoils on Tourmalet

Andy Schleck Tour de France

Andy Schleck tried with all he had to ride Alberto Contador out of the yellow jersey on the final climb of the 2010 Tour de France but he could not ride his rival off his wheel. They distanced all their rivals and crossed the line with Contador graciously avoiding to contest the sprint after following Schleck all the way on the climb, fending off all attacks.

Contador now seems all but certain to take the jersey to Paris and Schleck created a comfortable margin to stay in second after the long timetrial. Results after the flip:

I think they should let him have a crack

his work in the train is usually in the late kms peeling back the break – and they will have a lot of help to do that.

It's amazing what Tony can do the day after wasting himself

Case in point – winning the ToC TT the day after dying a thousand deaths working for Mick Rogers on the stage to Big Bear.

I wouldn’t count him out.

I have to agree with this.

And while there was a lot of climbing this Tour, there was less than the usual amount of time trialing. Plus there was the cobbles. A more normal course favors Contador that much more.

Not necessarily.

I think hardride in Giro = struggle in the TdF. But cruising for fitness still a possibility. Remember, Sastre pedaled Giro in 06, and challenged in Tour.

by Yossarian12 on Jul 22, 2010 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

it's not so much how hard the Giro is ridden

It’s the kind of form you come into the Giro with. Come into Giro in top form and there’s no way you hold it through the Tour. Coming in with lower form and building up can be very effective. Ullrich did it and had a strong Tour, as did Lance last year. It’s not ideal but if you’re behind schedule in your Tour buildup it can be a good option.

by admill on Jul 22, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the Giro was a bad option this year

regardless of what form you came into it with. The race was simply so hard for everyone I think it was hard to just use it as a training ride. Of course you can’t know that beforehand.

One small point

It’s only 8 seconds. Contador is sure sitting in a good position but it’s only a defect or crash between them. Conta needs to stay in the saddle.

That is still on the table

a time trial is such a dicey thing, we’ve even seen Cancellara go down in the Tour time trial before, and he’s arguably the best. Contador shouldn’t risk going for best time, that may increase the risk of a hiccup along the way.

KOM

So that was a letdown today. The Spotty jersey was at stake and no one contested it.

But that leaves Charteau with the final KOM prize for the Tour. Moreau in 2nd and Andy Schleck with snuck into third for a few VDS points. (That’s why he raised his hand at the end-the VDS points.)

"I’m satisfied with the stage win but I also wanted to turn white into yellow but unfortunately it wasn’t possible. I really tried hard, you have to believe me about that. I changed rhythm and I tried everything but I think we’re on the same level on the climbs. Alberto attacked and I could go with him – it was a quick response – but in the end he didn’t sprint to win the stage because I did the most work. I have a lot of respect for that, it shows that he’s a great champion.
"I tried to find out how he was feeling. You need to look at someone to see how he was coping. I think you can find out a lot if you look someone in the eyes. He didn’t have the sunglasses on today so it was possible to see, that’s why I looked so many times. But he always looked good and that’s kind of what killed me.
"El Pistolero is strong, huh? I could no drop him. He was always there. I wanted to find out if he was getting weak but he didn’t succumb. He even attacked me to show, ‘Hey, listen young boy, I’m still here! You better stop playing these games with me.’
"I’m super happy to win this stage today – it’s the Queen stage of this year’s Tour. To win on the Tourmalet is like a win on Alpe d’Huez.
"When I turned to talk to him, I said: ‘You pass?’ And he didn’t. I would have done the same. Why should he pass me? In the end, he let me win the stage and I’m super happy."

Question about Ryder and Garmin:

I am excited about Ryder’s result, and I know the team is happy about it as well. It is the result of tough riding, and he is an admirable and likeable racer. As I have posted several times, though, I feel like despite the difficulty and competitiveness of this Tour, it would be a mistake for him to suddenly develop GT-GC aspirations, unless training and testing really shows something that I am missing. SO, is it to the team’s benefit to focus him in on the GC in the future? I feel a team should not focus on the GC unless they seriously can challenge for the win or podium. In my mind that makes anyone outside of the top five irrelevant (other than top French rider), other than personal satisfaction (which is why I don’t get the big deal about Roche’s top 15 for AG2R).
This comes from my feeling that this is the hierarchy of performance value in a GT:
1- Overall
2- Podium
3- One of the other Jerseys/Stage Victory
4- Wear leader’s jersey during the race
5- Top five
6- Top Ten/Most Combative
7- TeamOverall
I think it is possible for Ryder to more often than not challenge for a stage victory. I think he could easily do that in his present condtion and still be top ten. I really don’t see him on the podium @ the TdF (although maybe @ Vuelta).

by Yossarian12 on Jul 22, 2010 12:48 PM EDT reply actions

Ryder

It should be noted that every year he’s been better than the last. I am not sure that we’ve seen his best, thought at 30 he must be close to it. Last year’s Vuelta was his first mountain stage win. This Tour was another big leap in results. He could well be a top 10 and possible podium GT finisher for a couple years now. So, yes, he should target a GT or two a year, besides the early stage races and the Ardennes.

by ursula on Jul 22, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

It looked to me like

he was trying to get a stage win – wasn’t he in two breaks earlier in the race? After a while, it gets harder to get in the breaks – either he’s too far up in the general or the stage doesn’t look likely to go all the way. Then, he just started riding to see how far he could go, I think.

Stage-chasing is a difficult business. That’s why a guy like Fédrigo, who has won from the break two years running is so remarkable.

by Jen See on Jul 22, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

On the day Fredrigo won the stage, he looked like the 'patron' of the breakaway, even with LA there...

He was animated and confident… that’s his natural element..

His cobbles attack was probably in search of a stage win. But the stage 12 attack was explicitly in search of time on the GC.

1- Overall
2- Podium
3- Green Jersey
4- Stage victory
5- Wear yellow jersey
6- Top five
7- KOM

9- Team Overall

Of course your point stands, Hesjedal is not really worth developing into a GC rider.

And here is a related question

What do Garmin know that no-one else does?

That is three years in a row that they have taken a nobody (in GC terms) and turned them into a more than respectable GC result. CVV, Wiggins, now Ryder. That’s more than luck, folks. There also seems to be a pattern that all three are sort of “diesel” types that they find climbing wings for.

Am I overreading this?

Just imagine what they could do with a Menchov, say.

Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously

by addict on Jul 22, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it has to do with the team structure

more than any magic transformation. For pretty much his entire career before Garmin, Vandevelde rode in a supporting role. That’s often what solid, consistent, deisel style riders end up doing on teams with a bigger star. Garmin is more the ensemble cast, and I think the management encourages them to have a go and there is more space for them to race for themselves. I’m not sure the team would really be able to take an established rider and make him better. But maybe.

by Jen See on Jul 22, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

CVV for def.

But Wiggo and Ryder? Neither even in the conversation for people who could handle a GC run.

Not saying I know the answer – just saying its starting to be a pattern…

Warning... not everything I say should be taken entirely seriously

by addict on Jul 22, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it is team culture.

Unlike a great many teams, I really don’t perceive any personality conflicts. Seems like everyone at least on a “work together” level likes one another, and is happy with their role. Say what you want about Vaughters, but I think he knows how to keep his riders happy and motivated, and he keeps the team chemistry upbeat.

Would like to see what he could do with Gesink, VDB2, or even Roche (although I question Roche’s affect on team chemistry). Garmin does not seem like a team that can handle arrogant superstars. Think they are more in line with the subdued personalities of Tyler, VDV, and Ryder.

by Yossarian12 on Jul 22, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah - it's clever isnt it?

I think you and Gav are onto something – clearly there is some preparation, but motivation and cohesion is counting for a lot.

Well run team. Would be fascinating to see what they could do with a genuine GC type rider. Perhaps they would screw it up. But they seem to be brainy and know exactly what they can do.

In the Tour, yes

But if you look at wins and podium spots overall, Team Sky’s season so far is pretty much comparable to Garmin’s entire first year on this level.

And I don’t know if I would say that Garmin were on top of things that year, there was a learning curve for them as well.

Sky started as a pro tour team

with lots of backing. Garmin was a pro conti team with less funding. Garmin’s second year and first year as a Pro Tour team saw them enter and win more races.

by Logy on Jul 22, 2010 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Learning curve

I believe Magnus addressed that when he retired and started commentar for the ISTSNBN (Internet Site That Shall Not Be Named).

More on Vaughters- I don’t know about his calls from the car (seems like he has largely turned that over), but more on his team chemistry…On the documentary that came out about their first year, I was impressed by how upset it shoed Farrar at not being named to the Tour squad, but Vaughters talked him away from the ledge. Ended up being a great move because Tyler really progressed in 09, and Tour participation or insult could have derailed that.

Last note….Garmin REALLY needs a stage win…probably no shot left this year, but must grab one next year!

by Yossarian12 on Jul 22, 2010 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well SKY plucked up guys under contract

and has money growing out of trees in their team bus. Looking at their squad this Tour has been a failure for them. They also just spent 1 million pounds per year on someone who in the end is still a TT specialist.

When J-Rod and Ryder accelerated Samu and Menchov were right before him looking at each other. He couldn’t pass them because there was no room between them and the fans. He ended up losing valuable seconds.

Who knows? Albert is strong enough this year to win without difficulty. Next year Andy will be older, stronger and more motivated. Will he have caught up with Albert? Should be a great race next year — especially with the young talent rounding into form.

I assume there will be a TTT

so depends how strong the Lux team is and how strong Bert’s team will be. The TTT decided the entire GC already last year. Also if Bert does do the Giro(and I find it unlikely but he has crushed Lance and beaten Andy twice in a row so not much to prove so maybe) then Andy could be fresher.

And I think Andy used them as well as he could

He let all of them ride as hard as they could and launched when they had none left to give. CAS killed Vino and Foogerlschlang sent Navarro packing to make sure Andy was mano a mano with Bert. Riis said they had some hope to send a man ahead in the break but they knew it was unlikely.

nice way to sugarcoat things. The other guys did their work in the flatter stages or earlier climbs. Astana had full control of this race from start to finish and many doubted they could. Yeah the Shack will win the team classification, I’m sure you can’t tell me who won that last year and I doubt you cared much. I give them credit for going for it but they came in with much bigger ambitions.

Sure it is

but it’s a secondary competition for a team with such high GC goals. My original comment refers to discussions pre-Tour when many(myself included) thought the Shack would have the ability to blow the race apart because several GC threats would be in place. As it turned out they were able to get guys in the break in the mountains but it caused no one stress seeing they weren’t GC threats anymore.

It's a secondary goal?... you don't say.

I never debated that Astana’s team would be weak. I figured AC would have been fine with almost any team there. I also never debated that RS would overpower things with their GC threats. They had bad luck, not sure the lack of it would have helped, but t sure takes the wind out of your sails.

Full control from start to finish?

I don’t recall them doing as much pace making as Saxo, who held yellow for the longest stretch so far. They came to do work when it was advantageous, and its easy to say Contador wasn’t shaken, but without Contador that team is mid pack and less dominant. Without one of their leaders, Saxo is very much in the competition. They did great work at times, held yellow valiantly for 2 stages, but I still feel like Saxo had the better race control, Astana had destiny control more or less.

"who held yellow for the longest stretch so far"

I think that answers why they didn’t do as much pace making on flatter stages. The team is entirely focused around one man so of course if you take away Contador you don’t have much, two entirely different team builds. Saxo left Andy isolated on several mountain stages.

Saxo is a very strong team

Most versatile team who could deliver him from start to finish with results, especially if Frank was there. I guess this time Astana was stronger, but i don’t buy that either team’s pace making and race control affected their adversary too much.
