Pretty good (sport)source reports Luis Leon moves to Rabo. After Breschel thatr is is the second big fish for Rabo. It seems with the minute more certain Nuyens and Menchov are the riders to leave for them.

Frinking is back!

This proves he’s not actually riding the Tour right now!

What would Rabo be aiming at with these signings?

Lulu for the shorter stage races? Or on Vuelta duty each year?
Breschel is a very good rider but very similar to Boom and Langeveld. Why not get a good sprinter to get the team used to working for a sprinter so Vermeltfoort will have an easier time fitting in over the next few years?

The word is that Menchov will go...

We’ve missed you Frinking.

So 90% chance he goes to Katusha then

He was linked to more teams

Astana iirc

Hmm I can't see that working

why would he sacrifice his podium chances to join a team fully committed to someone else? Katusha has the money and needs another GC rider.

Could be interesting if there is a bidding war between Katusha and Astana

Both have the money. And Astana has a lot of Russian ties. Plus I’m not sure if Menchov is comfortable with Tschmil.

by ursula on Jul 24, 2010 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I've read the Menchov-Tchmil thing also

Does anyone know the history on that one?

Funny, because I like both of them.

by Mr 60 Percent on Jul 25, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I know Menchov will probably go

But why replace him with a lesser GC rider? Why not go for another type of rider. Plenty of teams folding this year so why Lulu? Or is Lulu really the next Indurain, coming to glory at a relatively ripe age.

????

Plenty of teams folding? Why not go for another type of rider?

How many teams? 5? 10? Maybe 2? 3? is that plenty?

And how many riders have Menchov’s GT record or even close to it? Like 2-and they aren’t going anywhere?

Lulu is a great pick up for them.

Milram likely, CdE unlikely, Saxo no and new Lux team forming

I think I may have missed a PT team.

Can't really see a guy for the weeklong races on Rabo

so LLS fills a spot doesn’t he? Gesink anf Mollema are obviously aiming for the GTs and LLS could take the pressure off by producing some results I would think? I agree with ursula on this even if I’m not really sure it will happen in the end. Rabo might be LLS backup plan in case he doesn’t get a spanish contract.

Molo

That’s an even stupider nick than Bobo. Please discontinue…
Wait, there about equal in lameness, get rid of them both. :)

What?

To both of them? I’m outraged!

According to ancient Dutch nickname tradition they should be called “the Gees” and “The Mol”. Or just Gees and Mol. De Gees and De Mol.

Other examples: Kneteman – De Kneet, Karstens – De Karst etc.

I like Mol

That’s a good one. Short for Molly. Or when we use it, we can think of him as a molecule.

I do hope Lulu goes to Rabobank though.

by ursula on Jul 25, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

making room for Gesink to grow into?

Don’t know if his TT skills can improve that fast, though.

Breschel is such a different rider than Boom and Langeveld...

Boom and Langeveld for the attack while Breschel is capable to actual;ly wait and sprint.. And what have Langeveld and Boom deliver till now? I love the Breschel move… Assuming it is true..

LLS different story. I think he’s the one for PN and other Tours and classics.. He is a winner and that is what Rabo need. They are always there but they haven’t got the punch to finish it. With LLS and Breschel they have 2 riders who can seal in wins for them… Good for the moral in the team

Why can't Lulu and Menchov exist together?

Gesink and Menchov seem to have worked well together – or maybe that is the rub. It’s really 3 GC dudes together.

Frankly, I see these three being great assets to a team – and though I like Lulu, I just don’t see him being a real GT contender (he’s good, but great?). I don’t know, but maybe they don’t have the money for all 3, but if they did – that would be a strong team for all 3 GTs…

by JustJoshinYa on Jul 24, 2010 5:42 PM EDT reply actions

They also got Molo

Mollema. I love Menchov. Love him. But he’s got just a year or two left and he commands top dollar. Better to develop Mollema who within 2 years will be better than Menchov.

So what Rabo is hoping for is three young guys (Gesink, Mollema, and Sanchez) can develop a synergy and look to be major players in practically every stage race for most of the next decade.

by ursula on Jul 24, 2010 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Adding

If Lulu is true and Caisse falls apart, Rabo would be smart to pick up a couple other riders from there to make for some really solid teams. Guys like Gutierrez and especially Uran. Costa and…hell they could even get JJ Rojas feeling comfortable enough on cobbles that he could fit right in with their incredibly subtle Classics strategies. ;)

Seriously, If Rabo could add just a couple of these guys their lineup would be solid top to bottom for everything that happens after Paris-Roubaix.

by ursula on Jul 24, 2010 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

If Cde falls apart most their domestiques likely go to Astana and Bert I'd say

Arroyo could get Giro or Vuelta leadership and be Tour worker for instance. I’d say Astana plucks quite a few from Caisse. When it comes to Mollema I am not sold yet about his GT abilities just as I am not sold yet on Brajkovic.

Caisse has a lot of quality riders

who could enrich a few teams. Both Astana and Rabo could profit if Caisse goes kaput.

But it’s interesting. Just before I clicked back on thus thread, I was wondering about Astana’s future. It’s a good team, a top five team, but’s a narrowly focused team. They have Bert and a lot of domestique help. They have Vino, who can’t have more than a coupe years left, tops. They have um, Gasparotto and M Iglinsky, decent B+ Classics riders…

And that’s it. Their young Kazakh riders don’t seem to be developing, though of course they’ll continue to try. But they will need to do something else or they become the Bert show, totally. So what direction do they go in? Do they actually want to have a non-Kazakh-dominated team when Vino does retire? Can Vino convince them of that if he stays on as DS? Earlier this year they mentioned they wanted to beef up their cobbles team; how are they gonna do that? Will they actually look to pick Caisse’s carcass? Get Menchov?

Lot’s of questions on the future of this team.

by ursula on Jul 24, 2010 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I like this move for him if true...

But I’m sad to see Cd’E begin to dismantle. (sniff)

Venga Caisse d'Epargne!
