Luis Leon Sanchez Outwits Vinokourov in Clasica
Caisse d'Epargne's Luis Leon Sanchez won his first major classic in San Sebastian today with a crafty sprint that just got him over the top of Alexandr Vinokourov and Carlos Sastre. The three had broken away on the Jaizkebel and held off a rigorous chase, led primarily by Sanchez' future teammate Robert Gesink of Rabobank. But the victory wasn't sealed until Sanchez did a long pull with 2km to go, and then started barking at Vinokourov until he got the Astana veteran to take up the lead for the final km -- and kept him there. As it was, Vino still nearly took it with a powerful sprint, so Sanchez has to thank his tactics and good fortune that Vino towed the break home. Top ten:
- Luis Leon Sanchez, Caisse d'Epargne
- Alexandr Vinokourov, Astana, s.t.
- Carlos Sastre, Cervelo, s.t.
- Haimar Zubeldia, Shack, at
- Joaquim Rodriguez, Katusha
- Ryder Hesjedal, Garmin
- Robert Gesink, Rabobank
- Nicholas Roche, AG2R
- Samuel Sanchez, Euskaltel
- Richie Porte, Saxo Bank

Still huge by my standards..

Hesjedal and J-Rod the chumps here?
Never helped Gesink chase but apparently had a little something at the end anyway.
And Zubeldia...yeah, they are the chumps

That's the way I felt about Sammy at Worlds last year

that was fun!
some pretty smart riding from sanchez there, vino looked bloody strong but lulu rode a great tactical race. really happy to see sastre up in contention as well. he was never going to win the sprint but that was probably the best we’ve seen from him all season.

Man I hate I missed this
But I had Lulu ftw, yeah VDS.

You'll be fine

Well he certainly won't be cheaper.
But we have to see what he does the rest of the year. Last year he finished his season @ GP Ouest Plouay. If he does that this year again then he’ll be in the 14-18 range. If he goes on and scores in the Vuelta or Lombardia say then, well…
18 maybe
I guess it’s relative though. We shall see.

Hrm, has he said if he's riding the Vuelta?
Would seem a shame if he doesn’t, now that he’s team leader and has a good GT placing under his belt… but he has had a fairly long season and I see he hasn’t been a two-GT kind of guy so far…

Oops, Laverdad, sorry
Link is here, though in Spanish. Relevant paragraph where he mentions his race plan…
Voy a enlazar el Tour con la Clásica de San Sebastián y después me queda la Vuelta a España en el mes de septiembre para cerrar la temporada
Venga Caisse d'Epargne!
Judging that he is currently 37th, I'm going to venture and say 14 points
if not higher

What a finale this race has now!
Tons of opportunities for attacks and countermoves for all types of riders
Agreed. The changes to this course has made this an even greater race
Looking at the results, it seems this race is for the TdF riders 5-20

Could have played his cards better and laid off the chase a little bit the let the others bridge the final gap to take a break
so his legs weren’t totally on fire when Vino and Sastre went after Lulu

I'm interested to see what sort of racer Porte will become... doing well so far.

No... I'm just having a little homeristic moment... nothing to see here. Move along!

A fantastic run for him
it definitely shows he’s not a fluke, that he can hang with an elite group on a tough one day race. Oh, the potential…

It's really exciting... seems to be very grounded... fingers crossed :)

Most importantly, Porte is a happy little Vegemite... Lance could never be that :)

Is that 8 of the top 10 from the Tour?
"It's a lovely thing, feeling that momentum. If you're lucky, it's also about grace." Tim Winton
I wouldn't call it outwitting Vino
I think Lulu played the “I got us here and this is my country” trump card.

I think he played the
“If you’re going to make your patented late attack you better make it stick, chump”- trump card
ha!

So when do you guys think Vino will call it quits for the season?
I would think the Vuelta is out of question since he’s been going strong since the Ardennes.
What do riders do if they want be in form for the fall classics but not ride the Vuelta? (Or did I describe a group of riders that doesn’t really exist)
"Oh man, it’s going to take days to kill all these people!"
Tour of Colorado!!!
ah shit a year too soon? Some small shit races in France and Italy I guess.

LUIS!
I am soooo happy and so peeved that I missed it. However, even if I had been at home, apparently our internet was down today so I would have missed it anyway.
Anyway, go Lulu! I’m hooking up the laptop to the tv in order to watch any highlights i can find online (since Eurosport shan’t be showing any)
Venga Caisse d'Epargne!
