Why is this young man smiling? (Tour Of Utah Prologue)

Cause he is the current leader of the Tour Of Utah. After making a last minute decision to ride this weeks tour, Taylor Phinney came in beating last year's course record of 6:12, previously held by Brent Bookwalter of Team BMC, today's third place finisher, by ten seconds. Phinney was joined on the podium by teammate Alex Dowsett and Bookwalter.

Star-divide

Other bits of trivia, Levi Leiphiemer was fined 200usd for an improper skinsuit. Apparently Mellow Johnnies has no suit and so Levi wore Trek-Livestrong colors. USAC said non, non, non. Tonight's stage was dedicated to the memory of Terry McGinnis, the former Director of the Tour Of Utah who succumbed to cancer shortly after last years Tour. "...with the race being so hard it has become a race people train for," commented Bob Roll, "Terry McGinnis had the right idea. Create a great race and the riders and sponsors will follow. Tomorrow's stage one will run from Historic Union Station in Ogden Utah to Salt Lake City 85 miles. Alas the cafe will be unrepresented in the caravan due to a screw up with the online credential request. Our next scheduled episode will be Friday from the Miller Motor Sports Park Chrono. Prologue Gallery posted here.

Lovely photos - thanks for sharing

Great result by Phinney but also for Dowsett

Is the jury still out on this kid?

If so, I think the jury is stuck in the mud.

I am not about to bet against Phinney being a huge talent

But I think the “jury” is OK waiting until he has raced a few more European ProTour level events to make up their minds.

I know

I just see the cycling “jury” as being these people who never go out on a limb or try to conjecture about someone’s promise until it’s already achieved, thereby making their existence pointless to me. Call them the “Duh Team”

Is there a jury out?

I’ve never heard anyone say anything but praise.

by Jens on Aug 18, 2010 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Not that the "jury" isn't full of praise.

Just not the type that make guesses or predictions, whether out of fear or they just think it’s a silly thing to do. “Well, let’s just wait and see” in a Walter L. Cronkite kind of voice.

Here at the Cafe

we make our own juries, and they’re not allowed to stay out for more than the time it takes to make a latte.

Personally, I say… let’s wait and see.

What?

How many times has a kid come along and done great things.

Had a ton of expectations placed on him/her, didn’t live up to the hype and then have do deal with being labeled as something other than a success. If there really is a jury, they should be taken out and hung. Let the kids have some fun!

Exactly

I would want the jury to be out as long as possible. Say the kid shows promise and that we’ll see in a few years whether he lived up to it. And than leave him or her alone until their mid-20s.

HTC does it the right way

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/aldag-says-van-garderen-will-ride-vuelta-without-pressure

Main quote – "The most important thing is that he doesn’t come out of the Vuelta with the impression that he can’t do a race like that," he explained. "Tejay will have the freedom to do everything, and that includes quitting the race after ten days if he feels tired."

This kid is a definite character.

and at 6’ 5" it’s funny that he’s mini-Phinney.

6'5" Wow, never realized that. Guess I never looked at his profile.

Sure he’s not Dutch?

So

He's got a big personality to go along with his big stature.

He is a regular on Twitter

https://twitter.com/taylorphinney

and he does an occasional live chat on ustream. Tejay van Garderen joined him last month live from his home in Lucca, Italy where they all live now when in Europe. Girona is for the old guys it seems.

Lucca is the new Girona.

Of course, neither do I; really just a quip

In fact, I would choose Lucca over Girona in a heartbeat just for the awesome surroundings and the drier climate.

Sadly, I have been to neither so I can't comment.

But I did live in Germany for 3 years and visited the little lowland countries- Benelux.
