8 men have escaped

Jonny Bellis now lost touch with peloton – but did manage 140km or so with the group, not bad on a comeback such as his.

yes, that was mentioned in the French commentary of the women's race yesterday
I wasn’t paying proper attention, so I wondered whether I’d heard it right. That’s a real crisis for women’s cycling, especially the loss of Aude, I think.
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
l'Aude
would be a massive, massive blow. I can’t see how the season works without it. I wonder how much it costs to run? I wonder if the UCI will step in and help try to find sponsorship? I mean, they owe the women’s season, after destroying Montréal & PEI & Montréal WC…
by Sarah Connolly on Aug 22, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions
l'Aude has a budget of about half a million Euro
Route de France about 100,000 and Trophee d’Or about 120,000 (read the article that is a jpeg half way down the page)
He just tweeted
I hear the problem come from the federation and maybe UCI. Money no problem.
by Sarah Connolly on Aug 22, 2010 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions
so what the hell is the problem??
they don’t like women’s stage races or something??
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
It's my default to assume the UCI is on the wrong side...
…until there’s evidence otherwise
by Sarah Connolly on Aug 22, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions
Are you suggesting the UCI is going to step in to save women's cycling?
It’d be a first, but I’d like it.
No, and I'd like that too
But the immediate assumption that the UCI is behind everthing that is judged to be bad, particularly when the known evidence is one or two tweets, is a little presumptious – espcially when some other body is named first.
but we're going on past experience
and it was mentioned, so it’s not that presumptious
by Sarah Connolly on Aug 22, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions
The UCI aren't too bad
with all things other than the men’s Pro Tour. Among other things they pay CJ to cover a lot of the races
they mightily messed up the Canada thing in my view but...
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
That's my evidence that they don't care about women's cycling.
I am jumping to conclusions here, but it’s a jump inspired by past experience.
Serious question
What role did the UCI have in the canadian races dropping from the calendar – other than possibly approving two mens races later in the year. The little I’ve read on the subject seems to be that the races were set to happen and that the organiser (Manibal) pulled the plug out half way through the year, and the races were then cancelled as no one else could step in.
I haven't had the time to look for it
but I seem to recall that one of the issues was that the authorities were not prepared to close the roads for both sets of races. The UCI therefore would be culpable (in my view) as they should have investigated a possible knock-on before approving the new men’s races.
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
The loss of the races was discussed
in this thread here at the cafe. The culpability of the UCI seems at best tenuous. The links mention that two regions had already removed the races from their budgets (my knowledge of local canadian local govt is less than sketchy but these regions seem to be part of the wider tour and not specifically part of the cities of Montreal or Quebec – the venues of the one day races being staged) and sponsorship issues in general. The articles also seem to concur that with the retirement of one man – three races bite the dust.
It seems presumptuous to assume no due dilliegence was followed by the UCI or indeed lay the blame for the races disappearance solely, or indeed primarily at the UCI’s door.
The race sites from last year (click presentations) feature glowing reports from ministers and local mayors. It is equally valid, based on these, to asssume the UCI was assured of continued support would be forthcoming at the time whichever UCI licencing committee approved the mens races in Aug/Sep 09, and due dilligence was indeed carried out.
I am continually reading that the UCI doesn’t care about women’s racing (above it says the UCI owe for destroying these races) but the more you read down into the stories the less and less that seems to add up – and the UCI are becoming a convenient peg on which to hang the blame for everything that displeases people -whether it is merited or not. (Not my words, but the words of the people doing the most vocal criticism)
UCI perfect in every way – no. But an omnipotent power and force for evil re womens racing – no also.
in which case, what is the Federation's problem?
The races are currently France’s chief contribution to women’s cycling. The commentators desperately searching for the first French rider home yesterday was pretty pitiful. What is it? We don’t have any riders who can win these races, therefore we’d better not have the races so we don’t look so bad??
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
they seem to have the development capabilities
for the men’s track side – I mean they’re a major world power in all things sprinty, so what stops them using that like Aus/Netherlands/GB do to also bring the women through?
by Sarah Connolly on Aug 22, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions
It looks like some internal political struggle
Pierre Boue (ex organiser of the Grande Boucle) said something about how he several times thought that he had found a sponsor, only for a mysterious man in a grey suit to have a quiet word in ear of said potential sponsor.
Didn't Monty translate
that the Plouay organisers wanted another WC round in Cholet as well?
by Sarah Connolly on Aug 22, 2010 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions
Yes.
(The fact that Monty didn’t mention the end of l’Aude made me think I’d heard it wrong!)
They said that they just needed the tv to confirm because they needed tv to make it viable. Good for them, I think their commitment to women’s racing is fantastic & shows what can be done. But with the best will in theo world another one day race won’t compensate for the lost of two major stage races.
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
not after losing all the other stage races....
how many have we lost now? I really thought we’d reached the bottom, and it wouldn’t be possible to get worse… craziness as the racing keeps getting sronter
It would also mean just the Trofée d’Or as the only stage race in France – and that’s the most invisible race in the world…
by Sarah Connolly on Aug 22, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
I half heard that too
but I assumed that if it really were the case then I would have read something elsewhere. They weren’t that concrete on the details. The real killer for all these races is the lack of TV time. That’s why I appreciate more and more RAI Sports which show lots of those little sports that probably have compaable numbers viewing as taking part.
Actually I’ve recorded the whole stream from yesterday but (technical alert) it was broadcast using WMV2, a Microsoft tningy that doesn’t add timestamps, so you can’t go forward or back but have to watch it all from the start every time. And being Microsoft, they’ve stamped down on companies producing software that would let you do that, or would translate it to some other format. If anyone knows of anything ….
sorry Monty
I have so little faith in ability to understand French that I was relying on someone else for confirmation!
Can’t help with the irritating video issue, alas. But still, I was glad they did it.
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
I have to concentrate to understand it
Anyway, I’ve left it running and got to the spot again (it’s about 23km to go). They interview one of the organisers (not sure if he’s a Plouay organiser too) of the Cholet-Pays de Loire Féminin, the opening round of the women’s Coupe de France (itself a pretty slim competition with just 6 races this year). He says they have lodged a preliminary application with the UCI to make their race part of the World Cup. It would be the opening round actually, held on Sunday 20th March, one week before the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, and would be held on the same day as the Cholet-Pays de Loire Masculin. The Men’s race would start at about 11:30, the Women’s at 12:00, both would loop out into the countryside then return to the same finishing circuit. The race has already been running that way since 2004, but they would need a bit more money and some TV coverage to step up.
Now the possible downside is that that particular date is the Sunday after the Trofeo Costa Etrusca ends on the Saturday. That was cancelled this year, and a new race competing for the top riders wouldn’t help its chances of coming back. We shall see, I guess. The Cholet-Pays de Loire Masculin is part of the Men’s Coupe de France which I think French Eurosport has been showing this year, so there’s another possibility of TV coverage.
Now moving on to Aude and the Route de France, the French commentator, Emilie Menard, seemed pretty definite that both had been cancelled for next year, but I can’t see anyone else saying that. Yes, the organisers of Aude were saying during this year’s race that they needed a bit more money to be sure of continuing (things like the podium lorry needed replacing), and the Route really needs to work on getting publicity, but Aude’s website has a scrolling “see you next year” banner on it, and the Route is probably still tying up the ends of this year’s race. It’s around the 22km to go point if anyone can find the footage.
Where was it Emma Pooley said that
all the races she wins fold the next year? Maybe her curse is real? Yikes!

Some facinating reading in these results
First, as we could tell, that bunch sprint just wasn’t organized at all since none of the teams were very organized or even had multiple riders in the leading group.
Then you go way down to the back of that bunch and you see guys like Gilbert, Hesjedal, and P Velits, riders who you might have thought would have tried for the win on that last hill but didn’t. Instead they were content to basically coast in on the tail end of the bunch. Guess they are saving their form for later races.
Then there’s the defending champ, Gerrans. In the group at 1’40: down, in 101st place. He’s having a miserable year.

On second look Garmin and HTC looked a little more organised in the last k than it first appeared.
Well done to Offredo also – he got the right wheel when he followed Goss and was strong enough to take advantage.
Truly miserable indeed.
A twentieth place for Serge Pauwels must be about the best spot he’s gotten this year. So that’s a little comfort for Sky.
I was vaguely hoping Pauwels might do something or other.
A handful of places higher & I would have only had one VDS doughnut left! (Congrats to mpw5, btw.)

Ah yes
mpw5 is the first to reach zero doughnuts! Currently, all other teams still have 2 or more.

yep
The fact that we both had Mauro Santambrogio meant I had no chance of beating him/her (I think it’s him?).
Funny it’s two Sky riders who are letting me down. Still hopeful that Kennaugh might do something in the Vuelta but I fear today may have been Pauwels’s last best chance.

Who knew
that Kevin Seeldraeyers, Marzio Bruseghin, Julien El Fares and Mikael Cherel would prove to be such flops. Well the last was always a bit of a long shot, but whatever happened to the BCS and to Donkey Man?
I don't know who BCS is.
But Donkeyman only really likes the month of may – so I’ve discovered by adding him to my 2009 TdF team.
Seeldraeyers was wrongfully diagnosed with a cardiac deficiency (the right word escapes me) in the winter months. He was ordered to stay off the bike for three weeks or so while he got a second opinion. He says that for weeks afterwards, he was scared to train really hard, to really go into the red zone, as he was afraid he was just going to drop dead on the spot. It’s not an excuse for his entire season, but missing the winter build up seriously influences a rider’s shape for the rest of the year.
(BCS = Belgian Climbing Sensation, normally Kevin Seeldraeyers, otherwise either JVDB or any other Belgian kid having a good day in the mountains.)

I think after the tour we need to stick
to VDB as the real BCS

Impressive
Dunno why but I have been tracking my no-hopers rather obsessively… no chance to get to zero donuts since I have Mattia Gavazzi and Oscar Pereiro, but if Mauro Santambrogio can score points surely my other underachievers (Cardoso, Pauriol, and Cam Meyer) can too.
Cazzo, it's going to be a bloodbath! The Mortirolo is a horror, absolutely interminable. -- Michele Scarponi
looking at the league table
I’m not sure you have quite the need for points that I do… ;-) I’ve been clinging to the doughnut league for some vague sense of VDS achievement.

In celebration (& also in admission of defeat)
I’ve made a doughtnut thread. Yum!

Wait, I got _zéro points_ from Plouay?!
