Vuelta a España: A Win for Anton!

Post-Race Party!

Igor Anton celebrated victory today after attacking on the steep 23% gradients of the final climb. The Euskaldi-Euskaltel rider quickly opened up a solid gap over the lead group which included Joaquím Rodríguez, Vincenzo Nibali, and Philippe Gilbert. Rodríguez, in particular, has made a specialty of steep finishes like this one, but he could not answer Anton's well-timed attack, which netted the Basque his second ever stage victory. Vincenzo Nibali finished second followed by Rodríguez and Gilbert. Also of note, first time grand tour rider Tejay van Garderen finished fourth behind Gilbert. Gilbert continues to wear the Red Jersey of race leader with Anton and Nibali both close behind at 10 seconds down. Anton, meanwhile, takes over the lead in the Points. The Vuelta, so not a sprinters' party.

This thread is especially for Albertina ;-)

Cut-Off time

The official Vuelta website has only 149 finishers. Does anyone know how many riders, if any, missed the time cut?

Damn....

I almost missed it… Was cheering along like crazy for Anton in the end. Luckily I work for a sport company so they are kind of used to people shouting!

Great win, and impressive finish by most of the favorites even if I though Mosquera was going to stay in a bit better (I know it’s not his type of finish but anyway).
Also, what a brilliant finish for a stage. Don’t know if it has been a stage finish before, but the Vuelta might have found another classic finish!

Too many guys getting in ahead of Frank and Menchov..

..and hard not to notice. But okay, extreme finish.

Looking at the results: Caisse was riding for Ruben Plaza? Not the best day for them – maybe they should have sucked wheels.

Hope Tejay gets a free ride tomorrow…he earned it!

Dunno if they have anyone who's really good for that kind of finish

Or if they were riding for anyone in particular. Maybe that little flyer that Lulu took before the final climb was their best shot.

I would think a lot of the non-punchy GC guys accept that they’re going to lose a few seconds on this kind of finish and just try to keep it reasonable without going too deep.

He had a mechanical on the penultimate climb (if the 26% one is the last)

And he just stood there, patiently waiting, not worried at all. So yeah, I’d say he doesn’t have any ambitions in the GC.

I think the first subtle hint

was when he didn’t race a single race before the Vuelta and said in every interview ever that he couldn’t and wouldn’t ride for GC.

Tejay who?

You know, taking the scalp of a rider like Rodriguez is big time

Not many people can say they’ve done that, awesome! He just keeps getting better and better. This is great for Euskaltel. I bet Albertina is rapt about this result.

If I just had one more gear, I...

y'know . . . writing from an institution with a history

of . . . native american insensitivity

perhaps I’m over-sensitive to such references . . . but could you refrain from talking about “scalp-taking”?

I mean scalping, to Native Americans.

Albertina <---- still grinning like a loon.

Seriously, this was awesome. Just superb. I had to watch this in silence at my desk…I was so tense that my knuckles were white and how I managed not to scream I will never know. If my boss had walked in I may just have told him to $%£* off, which is not normal Albertina behaviour. Gora Igor, you little gem!

Happy happy happy happy happy!

yay!

That was a fab win. And I was totally thinking about you sitting at work trying not to cheer too loudly!

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
