Phinney takes phlight?

Don't say this boy isn't a forward thinker. Taylor Phinney knows that Radio Shack only has a contract to the end of 2011 and he's got suspicions that they may not continue sponsorship at the end of that contract. What on earth could have created such paranoia in this young man? Seems other teams out there like Team Good Lux and BMC are aware of the same rumors causing these suspicions and are tempting Phinney out of his current situation. Will he or won't he go, and if he goes, where will it be? Here's my dream scenario.

Star-divide

All the cool people are leaving Riis and going to Team Good Lux, "You want job security and great on the job training young Phinney?", look no further. Do we really need to even speculate where Spartacus is going since he's talking about leaving now? Oh how I would love for Cance to get back with the rest of his cool mates, and then hear the news that T. Phinney was heading to ride for the Schleck brothers and under the "classic" guidance of the great Cancellara. Wait a minute please, I'm having a moment of spiritual communion... "Heavenly cycling gods... please make it so."

Even Trek is going to Team Lux

Can I be the only one wondering if there is a Radio Shack / Team Lux connection?

There was talk about Lance and EVERYONE last year

Any rider who did at all well, or looked popular, was linked to RS…. helped by LA & Bruyneel saying how much they liked eg Brice Feillu, or whoever man-of-the-moment was at the day of the week

Hopefully he heads to BMC...get some classics schooling from Hincapie and Ballan wouldn't hurt.

Use Van Avermaet as a nice lead-out (yeah, I’m sure Greg wouldn’t mind at all…)

BMC in the classics?
Meh . . .

I can think of many other places that would be much more constructive.

by Ryan_Liles on Sep 2, 2010 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Team Lux is more constructive I think

That is if Cance does get over there as I suspect he will. If Taylor could land Cancellara as a tutor… game over.

I believe they have first refusal rights. So if they want him, they can get him.

RadioShack in 2011

Do we even know if Team RadioShack will be around next year? If you were on the ground in Utah, there were some pretty loud whispers that corporate might be pulling the plug this year.

RSH has gone from outperforming the market and its peers

for much of Jan. to April or May, and for June to early Aug., to a slump since early August. Not sure how much to read into that—could be random fluctuations, could be the price of their widget suppliers in China (Best Buy is also hurting). But if they are making financial decisions now, presumably they’re looking at budget conditions, they’re wondering if RS (the team) is worth it, if they’re losing market share…

ticker site with comparisons here.

by JFS_PGH on Sep 2, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Well . . . say you're an RS marketing type

how do you justify the lack of results in races that count against the negative exposure that has already occurred and is likely to continue occurring?

I don’t know how to account for this, but remember the collective “meh” that erupted when Armstrong and Bruyneel announced . . . Radio Shack . . . as the sponsor of their team. Compared to the companies buzzed about before the announcement, Radio Shack is an e-list entity. (And I say that as a native Fort Worther who ought to be proud a hometown company got some publicity).

So . . . what interests me is the behind the scenes “tick-tock” of how Armstrong’s supposed marketing mojo wound up tied to . . . an inconsequential company even within Texas. Is this lack of marketing pull attributable to cycling in general or is it more related to the questions surrounding Armstrong and co?

by R Mc on Sep 2, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

good questions, in my view

I was surprised by how that particular story ended. I expected a much more prominent corporation to sponsor the team, really.

by Jen See on Sep 2, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure it's both

but I have no idea which one you could attribute it to more. But if Radio Shack bails early, it’s certainly attributable to the shit that’s hitting the fan.

Just the money, right? Not the intangibles.

Like access to certain races, e.g., which RS can’t promise…

This post made me laugh. But I like the ending as much as anyone. Hmm, I think I’d prefer the BMC route, but the Cancellara-Phinney pairing would be quite remarkable.

Cancellara-Phinney would be good times indeed.

but 3 million euro to buy out Cance’s contract seems, er, prohibitively steep. A girl can dream

Yeah I could only see BMC trying to get Cance now b/c it would make no sense for the Schlecks to give Riis 3 million euro

I mean, with all ready having Contador and everything. Rihs is a pretty rich man though…

by Vlaanderen90 on Sep 2, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

IDK

I think this Saxo crew is a pretty tight squad, Cance seems to want to go, why?, Riis seems willing to let him go, why? Cance wants to go with his buds.

I have no idea how tight these cats are, but they seem to really get along. Cance has always seemed to want to give help to the Schlecks (esp. Andy) as oppossed to just doig it as a job description. And then he also enjoys quite a bit of success of his own. I can see how they would jump on the opportunity to keep together even at this price.

But BMC is more than a tolerable option. The Sky talk however, let’s just hope there is no chance of that happening.

Friendship really seems like a factor

but I can also imagine the very real fear that any team that has Contador will be very one-man-focused, even for a man with Cance’s palmarés and status.

That's certainly my fear... and we can see other teams buying up Classics riders...

so far Saxo hasn’t.

It's interesting now to remember this::

L’Equipe, July 29, 2009: http://www.lequipe.fr/Cyclisme/breves2009/20090729_093501_les-schleck-toujours-chez-saxo.html

July 30, 2009 – Schleck brothers’ agent refutes transfer rumor

Frank and Andy Schleck’s agent has stated that there is no contact to further a deal between the brothers and Team RadioShack, the new team being formed by Lance Armstrong.

Giovanni Lombardi, the former CSC rider who now serves as personal agent to the brothers, attributed the rumors of a possible deal to a strategy of the Texan’s for upsetting Alberto Contador.

"There’s no chance of that happening. I’ve had no contact with Bruyneel. It’s only a strategy to make Contador lose next year," said Lombardi to the French sports daily L’Equipe.

Lombardi’s statement quashed rumors that Andy Schleck, who finished second in the Tour last Sunday, was going to sign with Armstrong’s team.

"Andy has clearly seen everything that Alberto Contador went through at the Tour this year, and nobody can imagine that he’s going to get involved in that, with the ambitions he has for next year," said Lombardi.

The brothers’ agent indicated that they will fulfill the one year they have remaining on their contracts with Saxo Bank.

by Steno on Sep 3, 2010 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

I remember another article this July (I think) saying that is LUX didn’t get rolling for next year, the Schlecks were going to ride for the Shack for one year.
