"I am somewhat in doubt whether they are interested in my results, or if I am on my own."

Well, gee, Jakob. You think the Riis team just loves you unconditionally?

Currently making a name for himself as a bit of a whiner in Denmark

Quite a lot of negative comments about his attitude on danish forums and in danish press..

Personally I don’t know what he expects? He has said he’s leaving, the DS responsible for his training and schedule was let go for ill-loyal competition mid-season and Riis is busy scrambling to build a team for 2011 following the mass defection that Fuglsang himself was part of. Did he think anyone was going to invest a lot of time and effort in his development? He should do his work as a pro and shut up.

well...

now he’s confirmed he’s not the sharpest tack in the box…

I don't blame him at all

Riis hates deserters, I suppose it’s understandable, but he should expect Riis to publicly disown him at some point and make him out to be a malcontent who never cared about the team or something of that sort. He’ll compete, let’s not pretend that just because he makes this statement that he isn’t still trying hard to win.

Who knows, maybe he wasn’t happy with Riis, maybe he feels like Riis doesn’t care about what he does if it doesnt get the job done. He can say whatever he wants to, and i doubt it makes a difference in his effort whether he questions riis or not. I think these riders that have left him are leaving him for a damn good reason; because not everyone can perform well under his system.

He should expect less attention whether Riis likes him or not

It’s just how it is. Departing riders are low priority on all teams, has nothing to do with “hating deserters”. Löfkvist lost the entire season from the Tour last year because he was drifting away from HTC. I don’t believe it was because anyone hated him, it’s just business. Nurture your future assets, get your money’s worth from the rest.

What comes first though

the rider being ignored because they are leaving, or the rider being ignored and deciding to leave? I feel like Riis could do a better job managing his cyclists, ther have been too many less than amicable splits in his team for me to think its always the riders’ faults for being whiny or whatnot.

Fuglsang negotiated a contract in good faith with Riis last fall, and then didn't sign it.

Then this spring Fuglsang starts making noise about how he can get a better offer from other teams. Then he hops on the band wagon for the Luxembourg team. If the door hits him on his ass on the way out why would he question that, unless he is somewhat less than the brightest crayon in the box?
I doubt anyone who signed a contract with Riis thought they were going to get pampered. I think he has always had reputation for a less than sparkling personality, but riders sign on because he has a record of getting results. If you are going to not give 100% and not deal in good faith then you are on the wrong team. Fuglsang hasn’t figured that part out yet.

JF was never ignored

He was managed, and managed well by all accounts, by Kim Andersen. I think it’s a perfectly reasonable division of labour that Riis as the “CEO” employs 4 DS to oversee the day to day sporting-activity. If anything it seems he spent too much time on the sport side and too little on what he should since he had such trouble finding new sponsors.

I don’t think JF ever complained about his management before, it was a specific complaint about what happened after he signed for another team. Riis seems to have created a tight knit bond among his riders, the problem is he doesn’t seem to be included in that bond himself. Of course his personality is the problem there as you point out.

I agree with you that he focused on business too much

I’ve always liked what he was able to do with the team, but yes, i’m not certain he helped matters with his CEO status. I think he wouldve been a better ds than he is a team manager.
