The Daily Race: Vuelta a España Stage 7

Vuelta a España Podium Cafe

Stage 7: Murcia — Orihuela

What is it? Flat thing.
Got Climbs? Just one, and it's category 3.
Red Jersey Battle: Not today.
Ideal Rider: Sprinter! Why not Oscar Freire? It is his home race.
@Gavia: Bizarre course, this one. Keep your route slips handy, kidz.

This stage between Murcia and Orihuela follows an Escher staircase of a course, heading northeast then looping back on itself to finish not far from where it began. The profile is mostly flat with just one category 3 climb to interrupt the tranquility. The Puerto de Hondón de los Frailes climbs 8.8 kilometers and summits with around 60 kilometers to go. It's a nice incentive for a rider interested in wearing the mountains jersey to go with the early break. The long descent to the flat finish should offer the sprinters' teams plenty of road to bring back any cheeky escapists. A sprint looks all but certain in Orihuela, not that there's anything wrong with that.

A Win for Petacchi!
Petacchi won today's sprint ahead of Mark Cavendish and JJ Haedo. The stage followed the familiar pattern: early break, late catch, bunch sprint. Philippe Gilbert continues another day in the Red Jersey of race leader.

At 40 km,

the Vuelta will pass Kevin McCloud’s no. 3 wackiest Grand Design. I fear we will miss it.

Remarkable that, with the 1000-looped route,

they won’t pass through Elche, the city of a 1000 palm trees.

Orchard of date palms

Currently about 11,000 trees, at its height 200,000.

It is thought that palms were originally planted in this location as early as the 5th century BC by Carthaginians who settled in south-east Spain.

Who's to say the 5th c. Carthaginians weren't the equivalent of modern-day OC developers?

Time. It makes everything more interesting.

I really do not understand the truth.--Riccardo Ricco (per Google Translate)

Will's next destination: the seminary in Orihuela

Alas, the Vuelta won’t finish there.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
