Geelong Game - A world's fantasy game
Rejoice, rejoice, for the battle of the rainbows is upon us once again. On 3 October the best, the brightest and those fortunate enough to be born in a nation sans cyclists will be fighting it out for the title of best road racer of the year. The course in Geelong, Australia has been described as Brabantse Pijl Down Under, the Canadian races at the other side of the world or Flanders without cobbles. The race is 263 kilometers long and the local circuit includes one nasty hill, one slightly less nasty hill and a bit of an uphill finish. You can read more about it at Ed’s excellent site, here.
If you are sat reading this thinking "oh, I so know who’d be perfect for this", you’re in luck. Playing this Geelong Game will let you proof that you know exactly what you’re talking about.
You will do so by picking a team of ten cyclists to defend your honour. They must all race for different countries. And the total cost of your team must not exceed 75 points.
The cost of each rider has been determined using two factors: their team cost and their individual cost. The team cost is easy: it’s exactly the same as the amount of riders their country gets to send. So Mark Cavendish’ team cost will be 3 points, André Greipel’s will be nine. For their individual cost, I scored the top ten for 16 different races. Choosing the races was more difficult than it was last year, but I think the result turned out ok (in as much that you will not be able to afford Gilbert unless the rest of your team is crap).
The sixteen races were: Brabantse Pijl 2010, 2009 and 2008, MSR 2010, 2009 and 2008, World Champs Varese, World Champs Mendrisio, Paris-Tours 2009 and 2008, Vattenfall Cyclassics 2010, 2009 and 2008, Gent-Wevelgem 2010, 2009 and 2008. You can find the full scores at the end of this file.
The top ten highest scorers are:
1. GILBERT Philippe 35
2. FREIRE GOMEZ Oscar 30
3. DAVIS Allan 25
4. PETACCHI Alessandro 21
.FARRAR Tyler 21
6. WEGMANN Fabian 20
. BENNATI Daniele 20
8. BRESCHEL Matti 18
. PAOLINI Luca 18
10. MCEWEN Robbie 17
. BOONEN Tom 17
. CANCELLARA Fabian 17
75 points may not seem a like a lot to spend, but all my test subjects managed (thank you, trusty test subjects), so so can you. Have faith in thyself. The complete team selections aren’t in yet, so keep downloading this file or keeping checking this page – wherever you’re reading this – as it’ll be updated with all the selections as they come in.
Now, on to the way to win. The key to this game is time. The time of your six best finishers will be added, lowest sum wins. Don’t worry, out of the 30 something teams that played last year only one – R2D2’s Team Random – had less than six finishers. There are time bonifications at the line too: 30s for the first rider and then 20, 15, 10 and 5 seconds for the second to fifth place. In case of a tie he or she who predicted the most positions right wins. If there's a still a tie after that the highest correct prediction wins (so he who correctly predicted first, third and ninth spot will win over he who got fifth, seventh and eighth right). If there's still a tie after that we'll have joint winners.
To play, you can email your team to subconsciouscycling at gmail dot com. You can also post them in the discussion forums used to discuss the game, but your participation won’t count unless you email it. I learned that from last year you know: centralization makes gs go less something something. Deadline: when September ends, whenever that is in your part of the world.

It would be really quite useful if you could email it to subconsciouscycling at gmail dot com
I nearly went mad checking 17 different sources last year. My own fault, that.
Thanks a lot for playing though! No Spaniard, no Italian, no Belgian… you’re brave. No Dutchie, you’re a traitor ;)

Yeaah! Oh noo..
Martens (25) at 15secs.. Offredo (26) at 2’07…
I’m curious to see the winning team.. Should have been someone with 6 riders at the first 25
When do the National teams have to be submitted by?
have a draft team, just don’t want to submit till I know all my options.
All entries should be received by:
- 14.09.2010: for all categories except for Men Elite
- 21.09.2010: for Men Elite
Bernard Eisel sneakily became German in one of the scoring files.
But really, he’s Austrian. His real cost should thus be eight point: 3 for being part of a team of three Austrians, and five for winning GW.
EISEL = 8 POINTS.
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry to all the people whose team I messed up my misscoring Eisel. He was a popular fellow at 3 points!
This is fun. I've entered a team too :)

3.Kolobnev
4.LL Sanchez
5.Chavanel
6.Sagan
7.Schleck
8.Bole
9.Roche
Damn, had not read the rules properly
just assumed it should be 9 riders. Also had Chavanel at 9 points when the correct cost was 12. Anyway, here’s my new team.
1. EBH 12
2. Pozzatto 16
3.Kolobnev 13
4.LL Sanchez 9
5.Bole 7
6.Sagan 3
7.Iglinsky 6

By the way,
Wrong Iglinsky, perhaps? It’s Valentin on the list, not Maxim who won L’Eroica this year.
DAMN!!! Well, I'm gonna leave it like it is and hope it was destiny,
and not stupidity, that made me chose him. But thanks for the heads up:-)
Hi sorry - South Africa, Belarus, and Kazakhstan point values?
Bazayev or Fofonov?
Impey or Hunter?
Hutarovich or Siutsov?
Full update tomorrow. But...
HUTAROVICH Yauheni, is the only one to have scored indiv points (2). Belarus is a 2 men team, so total score for Hutarovich is four points.
All others have zero individual points.
Belarus team cost = 2
South African team cost = 3
Kazakhstan team cost = 6
Has Team SA been announced yet?
I have not seen it, anyway. The entries list (PDF) that was published yesterday has 5 entries of which 3 to start.
Hurray! Another game!

Fischer costs 1pnt when ranked by country, 6 when ranked by name. Which list should I use?

Brazil qualified 3 riders
so he should be at least points. Did he score 3 individual points? Couldn’t remember any results before I looked them up.
No problemo
He would’ve been a good pick at 1 point…
BTW thanks for organizing this game. It’s always nice to play with numbers and cyclists (read that anyway you fancy)

Everything has been updated and corrected.
Sorry for all the messing up. Countries sending fewer people than they’re allowed confused me. Maybe the system should be revised, I had similar problems last year and no problems at all for the classics game. Well, it’s how you learn right?

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Really? That's why he's the most marked man...BECAUSE he looks good at the moment..
He’ll be watched the way Cance was last year..

We'll see..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
He has the talent and he's on song at the moment...unfortunately everyone knows it...
It will be a brilliant win if he can pull it off…
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Yeah I'm unsure whether he'll be worth it in the scoring scheme.
first and tenth = fifth and sixth. First and twentieth = tenth and eleventh. I could have had more than a couple of potential top ten finishers for Gilbert and a 3 point rider.
It's scored by time, so
“first and tenth = fifth and sixth” is not really something you can say before hand. I think. But yes, you will need more than half your team to do well. It’s a joint effort.

According to the
programme (PDF) the meeting for “Confirmation of starters, all categories” has ended 5 hours ago. No peep anywhere on actual start lists, for any race. Bah! How is that possible, with the U23 TT starting in about 17h.
Thanks, those are on the UCI website as well
I probably missed them because they aren’t linked from the Worlds index page but instead they got their own separate start list / results index page.
Still no RR start lists, despite the fact that all events were on the agenda for the confirmation meeting.
