Added..

Fedrigo > FDJ
Vogondy > Cofidis

There are 2 teams done on the transfer market as far as I know.. Garmin and Rabo.. What amess it is this year!
Doubt Quick-Step and Omega are ok in this list

by Frinking on Sep 23, 2010 6:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Great job again Frinking!

Are there actually more transfers going on this year, or does it just seem like it because it involves big names, and some of the teams that are folding are big teams?

He's soo not going there..
Did totally too.

So, People, so far, what move surprised you the most?

For me it was
1. Carlos and Denis to Geox
2. Zeke to VacansOleil.

Classics team of Cervelo absorbed by Garmin

And again next year if they (Hushovd and Haussler etc.) stay on.

CTT shutting down and basically moving to Garmin... and Bah!

Then Zeke to Vac.

Any room left on Lux?

He’s one of those star power guys, and they are going for star power / media blitz.

by JFS_PGH on Sep 23, 2010 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't call it star power

But he probably has some credentials

He comes from a country with almost zero cycling tradition (even though there is an interesting new generation coming in, and I figure Hesjedal’s success will bring more people to the sport. Canadian Hegemony!).

Since Canada never had great success in the past (Mr Bauer excepted) I guess teams don’t spend a lot of time scouting here for new talents and logically spend much more time in Europe. With the cycling culture in Europe I’m pretty sure it’s easier than here for a talented kid to get spotted.

So I figure that for him, to have made it to the European peloton, his name must have some recognition. Obviously, Cervélo was looking for good North American riders so that helped, but I don’t think that is the only reason.

by MathieuG on Sep 23, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Canadians, for starters.

If you go with the “star power potential in each country,” he’d be a good young pick. For cars or cycling, Canada’s a small but solid and growing market, if not a huge one.

sellouts in what sense?

just curious, if you can clarify a bit without crossing over the libel / slander boundary, collegiality, etc. (because the site is beyond my grade of minimal dutch).

I agree making all commenters either agree with you or disappear is shoddy behavior. Depends somewhat whether they are an acknowledged PR site, or whether they claim to do any level of unbiased reporting.

by JFS_PGH on Sep 24, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh

More than any other Dutch cycling website I (used to) visit, they seem powered by ad money. Articles appeared slanted, to me. Factual critique was removed. By the way, when I just checked, it was Vacansoleil large on the front page and with a pop-in ad, so at least they’re not always tied in to the same advertiser.

Riche Porte is evidently going….nowhere. According to Riis in velonation.

by Odette on Sep 23, 2010 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

I have so many problems with Riis' statements there

I won’t ramble, but he has enabled the problem by allowing the situation to happen on his own team, and now he decries this contract-breaking behavior that he is very responsible for letting occur. Stop whining, either be firm with them all and show everyone this won’t be acceptable, or don’t complain when you let some riders go and others try to follow the group out of the door.

I honestly don't know how well he rode this year

But I thought he was one of the key classics support guys. I mean, Garmin can’t take everyone, but I am just curious where and how the line was cut.

It doesn’t matter in the end, Hunt got a new job. I don’t know much about Fly V, but I’m sure they could use an experienced classics guy.

The riders praised his help in time trial training, especially Porte. And seeing as Porte already seems very iffy about the situation of the team, this development is just baffling if Riis really wants Porte to feel at home at SB-sungard for years to come.

Reports coming out that Sep Van Marcke is on his way to Garmin-Cervelo...Are we looking at a new Quick Step here?

This would put there numbers at 27
3 still unconfirmed in Cam Meyer, Tom Peterson and Matt Wilson. Another neo-pro will be needed to boost the roster to 30 so one of these riders will be going if 2 are going to stay.

Classics men for this team now include Hushovd, Haussler, Van Marcke, Hammond, Klier, Lancaster, Lloyd, Rasch, Maaskant, VanSummeren and possibly Farrar. One day races only have 8 riders on the roster so Vaughters and Whitey better take some classes on how to manage this much talent.

Is there a better classics team out there now? Has Vaughters basically out-done the entire QS-*Lotto axis? Is Belgium finally going to collapse entirely into acrimony and recriminations (or is that just its normal functioning state)?

by Ed K on Oct 4, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

(or is that just its normal functioning state)?

Yes.

Lotto – Gilbert, Bakelandts, Blythe, Roelandts, Debusschere, Vandousselaere, Willems, Lodewyck … only one big gun but not a terrible back-up squad.

QST – Boonen, Chavanel, Terpstra, Van Keirsbulck, Tratnik, Hulsmans, Tosatto, Maes…

Are they as good as Garvélo? Hell no. Of course not. Are they terrible? Nah.

I admit to having had the municipal (non) functioning of Brussels

explained to me in detail this summer, so that wasn’t an entirely uninformed guess.

I think looking at this that the difference isn’t that great. Garvelo are probably superior on balance, but QST and Lotto still have to two most accomplished classics riders in the peloton today. Gonna be interesting.

Yep

But one based on the regretable lack of availability of anyone over a certain age that is blemish free – rather than one based on the type of rider they currently hire.

But more that they could've signed

Let’s not forget that this list does not include those out of contract that stayed with their team. It’s probably easier to start a team this year (Milram fold, Cervélo fold, Saxo reshaped, BBox exodus…) but it’s not like they had no one at all to choose from.

I wonder if it was a cultural - or more likely, a linguistic - thing?

Not seen much about how the Italians, say, have got got on but Possoni is supposedly on the way out, Cioni is from Reading anyway & Viganò seems to be enjoying teaching the young British lads Italian swearing. It’ll be interesting with Spanish speakers next year, though Flecha’s been a bit of a rock for Sky this year.

I just think of things like having no plan Bs for the GTs: a dashing breakaway stage win at some point or even an heroic attempt would’ve been a much better memory than their suicide pace setting on the way to Morzine. Or only letting Löfkvist free at the Tour when it seemed much too late.

not sure

Brailsford says he likes Scandinavians because they have ‘the right mindset’. I just think the whole bluster and hype has created unrealistic expectations, and just pissed a whole bunch of people off. Essentially, underneath the bluster, they’re just a cycling team, not a revolution. And quite a mediocre one, too. Given the talent pool they have in their squad, they’ve come out of the year with pretty creditable results, and lots of wins. But they’ve hardly been the revolution they claimed (I wonder if the Europeans still feel Sky can save them from their parochialism?) and most of their – impressive – win count has come in fairly small races. And weirdly, they hyped up winning races like the pre-TDU crit and the Qatar TTT like they’d just done a Mapei at Paris-Roubaix, then were silent when they got wins that actually meant something, like Henderson’s Paris-Nice win, Flecha’s Omloop or EBH’s Dauphiné stage.

Most of what they said should be viewed as marketing

And I dare to say that it’s marketing towards people who are relatively new to the sport. You don’t start a new team with quite a lot of money and then say “we’ll see how this goes, wish us luck”. Even when it’s closer to the truth. And of course, Wiggins Tour last year didn’t help.

Badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger...

by TheFigurehead on Oct 5, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

why not exactly?

teams like Saur-Sojasun and NetApp are trying to build from the ground up. Even BMC are spending time ProContinental before stepping up. British cycling has no middle ground – there’s nothing between the ProTour (Sky) and relatively low level Continental cycling (which is mostly self-contained to a scene consisting of a few 3 hour races and a crit series). They could do with a Continental feeder team that go and race a few more international races, otherwise it’s all money to the top, relying on the same handful of riders because the gulf from UK domestic cycling to the top is too great.

I would personally be against the awarding of any new team the ProTour status. Give them ProConti and make them prove their worth; with the budget and many of the riders they had (Flecha, Lövkvist, Boasson Hagen in particular) they’d easily have got enough invites to put the points together.

The problem was not the lack of a ’we’ll see how it goes’ approach, it was the lack of a ‘we will be a top team in a couple of years’ sense of realism. Rome wasn’t built in a day, as they say, and it was a completely new venture – remember that Katyusha and Radioshack had the foundations of Tinkoff and Astana to build on.

I think another problem was that there are a lot of random variables to road racing not present on the track, and I think they were underestimated.

by UrlaubinPolen on Oct 5, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

There's a lot of merit to the building approach

One thing that was pretty obvious this year was that management, Brailsford and DSs were nowhere near ready for the level they entered on. Brailsford with all his experience from the controlled track-environment and some first year DSs that suffered from the loss of Sunderland.
I don’t think they’ve had such a bad first season, it’s just that they haven’t been able to live up to an unreasonable hype (that they are partly responsible for themselves).

Precisely because of the "no middle ground" you're talking about

I support your argument as far as stacking the deck so the "dive right in" approach is harder

But I wouldn’t make it a hard and fast rule. Some teams have plenty of experience even though they’re new team. I think, for example, Team Lux will do just fine. RadioShack did fine in my opinion.

And I fear any policy that limits or discourages more companies from sponsoring cycling.

So I agree with you, but not as rule. The system should discourage the Team Skys of the world, but not ban them.

not at all

Teams like Team Lux and Radioshack don’t NEED ProTour licences. Cervélo proved that. They have the money and resources to get the invites to all the big races, and they have riders of the requisite talent to make inviting them almost a no-brainer for most race organisers. Teams like FDJ, Euskaltel and so on… they need ProTour licences because sponsors may be less willing to pay out if they can’t get coverage at all the top races, because teams like that can only guarantee a set number of invites (usually the ones from their home country’s authority). Teams with triple that budget can afford to get stars that mean they get those invites without needing the licence.

There’s only so much room at the top, and I would like to see a bit more commitment to the future of the sport before I hand out licences to the top level; sponsors for whom the sport is a high-budget plaything could be transient and disappear in a couple of years; we’re already almost resigned to Radioshack being gone after next year. Anything that discourages the Cofidises and Lottos of the world from continuing to support the sport is a bad thing as far as I’m concerned because it’s people like that we’ll need to rely on when times are tough. Hence why, if we’re going to make room at the top for these new moneyed teams, we need to ease the transition so as not to unceremoniously drop people whose companies have given years to the sport. If Team Sky, Fly V, Team Lux or whoever have to go a year without a guaranteed invite to the Tour de Pologne or the GP Ouest-France for that, so be it. Unless they do a Radioshack and piss off the GT organisers, they’ll get to do at least a couple of GTs with their rosters.

by UrlaubinPolen on Oct 6, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Cervélo did indeed prove that.

& the team’s folding now.

To be honest, I agree with a lot of that but the tide’s in the other direction. Look at some of Vaughters’ pronouncements, for instance. The pressure isn’t for a promotion/relegation type model but for a relegation-free closed shop. Cervélo’s one example but look at the problems & disappointments Skil & Vacansoleil have had. Where’s that ended up? For Vacansoleil, at least, signing Riccò & Mosquera (presumably in hope of access to races in Spain & Italy). Look at the ludicrous UCI ranking system which has meant that, say, Landboukrediet can’t get into cobbles races but some of the Italian pro-conti teams are laughably obliged to attend. You can’t blame a team that has the opportunity of a few quid for getting in there while they can.

by civetta on Oct 6, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't

I don’t blame the teams for doing it. Why shouldn’t they? I blame the UCI for supping on that sweet nectar. The UCI are the ones who are trying to make the top tier an exclusive, nepotistic old boys’ club, where the only way to get in is to have more money than the members of the old boys’ club, whereupon the least moneyed member will be unceremoniously turfed out to let you in.

I am wholly in favour of a promotion-relegation model. If you have riders of a set number of points, or a set budget, or something like that, you can start in the second tier (similar to ProConti now – can be invited to any race at the organiser’s discretion), but the top tier is reserved for the top-ranked teams on the road.

I would also make it so that no team was obliged to attend anywhere. What value is the TDU to FDJ, Euskaltel or Lotto? However, if their position as a favoured team was at stake if they didn’t pick up X number of points, they may be forced to race harder at these. ProTour (or World Tour or whatever) races unable to attract a cutoff number of ProTour TEAMS would lose that status.

The problem with my method is that it is perhaps too pessimistic, based too much on keeping the traditional base of cycling secure and not enough on Pat’s beloved “globalisation” (but only to English-speaking countries…) – the problem with the UCI’s model is that it is willing to sacrifice the traditional bases of the sport in order to capitalise on a “global” audience, most of which probably won’t give a damn once Armstrong’s retired.

by UrlaubinPolen on Oct 6, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

No, I don't care about who is behind "Team Sky"

To me, it’s about how much of a team you have to build.

RadioShack is the perfect example to me. It was a new ProTour team, but in reality, it picked up a 10 year old infrastructure and moved it.

Team Lux has a lot to build, but they had a core of Saxo Bank guys – riders and a DS. I have no idea if Team Lux will perform next year, but I hope they do.

I think jumping in at the top level should be discouraged. I just don’t think it should be a rule.

Oliviera

will bring down the Shack’s average age a bit then!

They’ve already got Kwiatowski (another U23 talent), so their average age is starting to normalise :)

What would Johan say???

probably “you make wise moves to be wise and being wise makes you wise and signing here is wise so thereby this young soul searcher seeks to be as wise as a human entity can be in life..he seeks perfection but his expectations come with modesty, he seeks life reform and only he can revolt against his negative instincts, oh this boy is a gem of fortune and we will all grace his eternal spirit on Team Radioshack next year!” Or something like that.

Martin Mortensen is leaving Vacansoleil and won’t say where he has signed so I’m 93% sure he is going to Team Lux.

Brailsford now says

he was misquoted. New version: Sky has been talking to Rogers, but no deal is done.

Did anyone remember that Davide Rebellin's suspension ends in April

according to Cicloweb he’s already in talks with De Rosa and Astana.

And it looks like Carmiooro-NGC are in trouble. NGC are withdrawing from cycling completely and also pulling out the brands they own. Which include Mapooro and Carmiooro. A double ouch there.

Just in time for the Ardennes Classics

Be interesting to see if he is still “always good.” That was our mantra about Rebellin, whenever we were trying to spot the contenders.

Ban ends on April 27.

Isn’t that too late for the Ardennes?

I thought we already knew CarmioOro were in trouble. They’d lost most of their French contingent, and Pardilla and Ventoso were both to Movistar, and Sella to Androni, left them looking very, very thin on the ground.

Liberty Seguros (new team, back for their 4th bite at the cherry) finalise their 2011 roster:

José João Mendes, Edgar Pinto, Filipe Cardoso (all of LA-Paredes Rota dos Móveis, all rode for Liberty Seguros in 2009)
Rui Sousa, Antonio Amorim (both from Barbot-Siper; Sousa rode for Liberty Seguros Continental from 2005-9)
Ricardo Vilela, Sérgio Sousa (both from Madeinox-Boavista; Vilela rode for Liberty Seguros Continental in 2009)
Vitor Rodrigues (from Caja Rural, rode for Liberty Seguros in 2009)
Marco Coelho, Fabio Silvestre (from Liberty Seguros-Santamaria da Feira u23/amateur team).

While the bigger Spanish riders and doping-convicted Portuguese/Spanish names are no more, this team does bear an unbearable stench of ssdd.

Pegasus update

The team are optimistic but I’m hearing more things that the CA/UCI politics is a major spanner in the works of their Pro Tour application.

Johnnie Walker (one of Will’s younger brothers) is looking for a new team, from Footon-Servetto this year.

that's weird he got let go

isn’t he extremely popular with spanish fans?

Does anyone know if Johnnie Walker is popular in Spain?

He did the Vuelta and is currently coming second at the Tour of Hainan so I think he’ll be snapped up, Fly V would seem a logical destination (just a guess).

Rui Costa not a Movistar.

VeloNation says he had a falling out with Eusebio Unzué that was so severe he hasn’t raced since the Tour (anything to do with that little altercation with Barredo?), and at the moment has no contract for 2011.

Teams he’s rumored to be talking to include RadioShack, Vacansoleil, and Team Schleck.

Dammit, dammit, dammit.

I knew about the possibility when I posted the above that Costa could be one of the positives from the Portuguese TT championships, but I didn’t mention it because I figured the odds were still against him…oh, well. The two positives were Rui and his brother Mario. So, if there was any hint of this, that’s a damn good reason why Costa’s contract wasn’t extended.
