Elite Women's ITT: Pooley Rockets to Victory
Great Britain's Emma Pooley upset the applecart a bit today with a solid victory in the Elite Women's Time Trial, launching into the virtual lead on the major climb of the course and extending it through the last 10km. Pooley rode a smooth tempo going both up and down the course, and crossed the line with a 43 second advantage over then-leader Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli. Things got close at the end, as first Linda Villumsen of New Zealand and finally German Judith Arndt threatened Pooley's time, but neither got within 15 seconds of the Brit. Arndt took silver by less than a second over Villumsen. Great day of racing for Britain and its former colonies.
The face of victory:

I'm paying for ES player
but for over a month since their “technical upgrade” it doesn’t work on mac. Bloody marvelous.
it's silverlight now, isn't it
"I was just trying to keep warm" - Ian Stannard on finishing third in KBK
NOS (Dutch TV) uses Silverlight as well for streams & archives
Works fine on my Mac. It does have to be an Intel, not PowerPC, Mac (since 2006 all Macs use Intel processors). I know Jens is only a recent convert, so it it must be something else. Perhaps they use a weird hybrid of Silverlight (formerly Flash) for the interface but a separate ASF/WMV stream for the actual video. With Flash, the URL of those streams can often be found in the page source as “mms://…” which can be opened and viewed by VLC Player. Maybe their use of Silverlight now hides these addresses?
It does
you taught me how to harvest the mms source from their old site and it worked like a charm. Now, not so much.
Aw, that blows
Did you try
http://www.rtbf.be/sport/ ?
Apparently the secret to evading the georestricting is to set your clock to CET time. Us Belgians really know our technogoly!
NOS had streaming
and i’ve heard you can get round their geo-restrictions too…

Change the clock on your computer
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
nope
didn’t today. Just the restricted link to their Livecenter. I think the nasty feed-stealers aren’t up at that time of day to supply the rest of us with free access.
Just a bitch to track down
the freetv sites have it but then it gets shut down. None of my old links worked today.
I'm rubbish, I've just been told it's possible!
you know, changing where you are on your computer, changing time, never done it though

Sport is restricted, TV2 saves my Sunday
but the u23 and women’s RR look like lost causes at this point.
UCI list says
Streams to find are
U23 RR live on TV2 sport denmark, australia channel one, VRT ein belgium, RSI switzerland, J-sports japan.
Womens RR race – lose japan and denmark, add NOS netherlands and BBCinteractive
Mens time trial – add RTBF la deux in belgium and BBCinteractive and also shown on SF in switzerland.
(N.B. UCI list has tba for universal sports)
BBC streaming everything
but restricted, I think

No u23 on the beeb sadly
And advance warning – the mens road race will not be shown on the red button on freeview – satellite tv and internet streaming only.
And will be geo-restricted
That really really sucks. I'm utterly furious.
I only have freeview, and my internet is working too slowly for decent live streaming. Bloody BT. Why why why? It’s been on Freeview for the past 2 years!
Gora azenarioak!
horrible combo of horsejumping & golf, I fear

Yep. I have a fairly high tolerance level for most sport.
But Not That.

New Zealand will exceed your expectations every time*
That’s one reason I like it so.
(*Disclaimer: Rugby World Cup performances excepted)
hey!
I am merely quoting posters from the New Zealand tourist board, which were featured in Flight of the Conchords.

So we had a tiny climber and a big rouleur win today
Didn’t give much help in predicting the men’s winner?
She is fab
But that’s about it.

En nee ik heb niet gezopen!
I didn't notice this on the feed
but if you look at the piccie on the BBC she’s wearing little Cervelo earings
I know! I laughed at that in the interview
due you think the blokes will be wearing them too?
by Sarah Connolly on Sep 29, 2010 3:35 AM EDT up reply actions
ps, re "little"
is relative to Emma’s ears – probably small & discreet on the blokes!

There's a much bigger worry... Richie Porte's Twitter account is gone!
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
What gone completely?
I noticed yesterday he’d started calling himself richie_porte instead of porteye….you sure it’s not just the name change?
Gora azenarioak!
Thank you! I thought you'd know the answer :)

father of six
It gets worse in swedish where where “sex” means six as well as sex. Danes and norwegians at least spell them differently.
Emma's ride
On reflection, what was most interesting was that we’d expect the “old” Emma to gain time on the climb, then lose it on the descent (eg Beijing) but she’s completely sorted that, in TTs at least – she gained 1s on the 1st climb, pulled it out to 11s by the end of the descent, and continued to improve over the flat as well. I LOVE that she’s cracked that, without losing her climbing – she really has had an amazing year, and if she takes it up another notch in this off-season, she’ll be unstoppable next year.
(I just wish I’d put some £ on her to win, earlier in the year, say during the Giro…. bah!)

Lyne brought up something interesting, which I hadn't heard,
After being forced to change her position, Great Britain’s Emma Pooley won the World TT. […] Pooley was using a bike she hadn’t used in over a year and was forced to make adjustment to the UCI TT bike rules.
Oh, is this to do with her "real" bike being too small for regulations?
Some crazy folks were suggesting she shouldn’t be UK Champ, because the bike she had was smaller than regulations…. even though she rides UCI-approved bikes all the time & clearly needs a bike that can fit her… assume that was people with no chance of winning anyway…
(an aside…. it’s a great ad for Cervélo that their bikes fit both Pooley and Wild….)
(although, GB had weirdness re bikes for the men’s u23, for Alex Dowsett, so it could have been Team GB incompetence…)
by Sarah Connolly on Sep 29, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
to be fair Alex blamed himself for clipping his pedal
but I don’t understand why they had no spare TT bike for someone who had a real shot at a medal

I hadn't heard anything either way
but Vaughters tweet after the win sure made it sound as if Emma P is riding for Garmin next year.
I assumed from the é-ar-rings
she was garvélo all the way ;-)

yes, it was mildly gratifying he knew who she was... ;-)
