Morning!
I have to go out for lunch today…hope I’ll be back for the excitement later on..
Gora Euskaltel! Sorte on azenarioak!
Gilbert's crash may have lost him the leader's jersey yesterday
(not that the chances of keeping it without the crash were so great)
… but all in all Lotto were relieved at the end of the day. Gilbert’s first words upon reaching the team car after the crash were “Copain, I think I broke something”. So to find out that that was just shock talking was a huge relief.
The crash itself was Petacchi’s fault, apparently. The Italian had just put new wheels into his bike, and his break pads didn’t work on them. The only way to stop was to drive straight into Gilbert. Ale-Jet apologised profusely, Gilbert said it wasn’t fault he had a mechanical, they’re all still friends.
I bet I could think of a way to stop that didn't involve running straight into someone else
and I don’t even cycle for a living.
I really do not understand the truth.--Riccardo Ricco (per Google Translate)
very fast start
The average is 51 kilometers per hour. The speed is very high. The back has split in three groups, although it seems they are coming to one compact pack again.
Nice break up the road though, but they've only got 14s
FRÖHLINGER Johannes (195)
VAN GOOLEN Jurgen (132)
CESAR VELOSO Gustavo (212)
BARREDO LLAMAZALES Carlos (141)
TEN DAM Laurens (158)
LOPEZ GARCIA David (055)
NOCENTINI Rinaldo (017)
MARTINEZ DE ESTEBAN Egoi (074)
KREUZIGER Roman (125)
POZZATO Filippo (189)
BONNET William (042)
HUSHOVD Thor (007)
CHEULA Giampaolo (083)
CATALDO Dario (142)
break:
MONCOUTIE David, PERAUD Jean-Christophe, KADRI Biel, CATALDO Dario, CARUSO Gianpaolo, LOPEZ GARCIA David, KREUZIGER Roman, PUJOL MUNOZ Oscar, VANENDERT Jelle, RABUNAL RIOS Gonzalo, QUEMENEUR Perrig, BARREDO LLAMAZALES Carlos, GASPAROTTO Enrico and MARTINEZ DE ESTEBAN Egoi
Looks like a good break...nobody is high on GC really. Hopefully Kreuziger finally shows some life
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
They've got 2 minutes on the peloton, so it looks like the right one.
RAMIREZ ABEJA Javier (028) has realised that Mouncoutié is there and he isn’t so he’s chasing on his own. Stuck in no man’s land though, a minute away from the break.
Kadri did well to get up front and make the break
He was stone last leaving the start, behind all the team cars, almost like he’d left something on the bus and went back for it!
It could have been Ale-jet's last day off riding.....

Boiling hot at the start this morning
Normal scenes of chaos but you get up amongst the teams like at a small race., rather than a GT. Lots of the cyclists posing for pictures. Took Carlos about ten miinutes to get away from his bus due to interviews and fan requests. Garmin team super friendly with the fans, Tyler very chatty, seems a tort nice bloke Today’s highlight, cav signing a picture of one of his tdf wins.
Good morning everyone!

Shouldn't matter...I doubt they will be getting a huge gap plus Barredo won't be a threat once they get to the bigger mountains
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
Perhaps,
but I don’t think Anton or Rodrigues wants to give the red jersey to another rider before the rest day.
That what I think too.

that is how I got in. It says “watch now,” and that’s the only place that is saying it now… There’s no commentators yet, just ambient noise, and it’s great. :-) Julian Dean is suffering mightily, at the front of the peloton with all the Euskies.
One Carrot not feeling good, VN:
Euskaltel’s Gorka Verdugo also looked pretty bad with bandages all over his right side.
"I feel pain everywhere," said the rider who caused Cadel Evans’ crash in the 2008 Tour de France and crashed right in front of Lance Armstrong on top of a climb when the American was chasing after an earlier tumble in the Tour de France.
"I would drop out, but I have to stay in the race to defend the jersey," the Basque rider said.
It's a pity his notion of defending is throwing his body onto the tarmac....
so that others will fall too…

Aw, that was so nice! I was wondering what the heck Dean was doing up there, and he
was up there to greet his family at the summit; he went ahead and got moving hugs! I love that!
Probably, because, you know, he is hurt.

I know! He was REALLY suffering, and I just couldn't figure out why???
He had the best reason to be up there, it turns out.
Kash-ls-King had some bike problems yesterday
Andreï Kashechkin broke his bike with 7km to go to the top of Xorret de Cati yesterday. "It was the worse moment because we just approached the steepest part of the climb", the Kazakh from Lampre said. "The bike I was given was at the size of Grega Bole, so too small for me and I couldn’t sit on the saddle at all until the end. I lost two and half minutes but I’m not worried. The Vuelta is still and there will be bigger differences created in longer climbs. I’m feeling good".
Are there any tickers / updates from the Giro della Romagna?
It’s a VDS race and Sagan is riding, therefore I’m interested.
hi guys!
Home at last. Do we have video yet? Universal’s TV thing is showing shlock infomercials.

Either there’s extra room in their jersey to stuff a few more, or if the jersey is tight enough. less room. I can’t figure it out on the amount of caffeine I’ve had so far.

Of course, it's a big deal, but you're putting yourself under huge pressure.
From the ticker today:
Katusha’s directeur sportif Dimitri Konyshev admitted he doesn’t agree with his team captain. "Purito absolutely want the jersey but I absolutely prefer him not to take it today", said the Russian.
Anton doesn't have that many huge results at this point
I doubt he would give up a jersey for a possible long term tactical gain.
Hmm, maybe, but I think that's a little unambitious.
Anton is talented enough to win the overall, and his team should be doing everything in their power to make that easier for him.
OK, they didn’t plan to get the jersey yesterday, and he kinda got it by accident, but if I were the Euskaltel DS I would now be trying my best to get rid of it. Think big!
meh
Americans are fixated with “giving away the jersey” after 7 years of bruyneeling. Are you american too?

What Jens said.
plus they already have one guy injured, but riding “to defend the jersey” instead of going home. I don’t see them getting proportionally stronger, as a team, by waiting longer (apologies to Albertina if that’s an uncharitable guess…and yess, it’s just a guess).

I worked at a French Fry truck one summer at the WI state fair in the 70’s. It was the hottest job in WI that summer, I swear to god. Frying donuts must be right up there.

Ditto
Race going so slow have made it to alcoy with enough time to be sat in a bar watching the last 35k on tv. Lovely downhill run into alcoy, then over the bridge, then on to a sharp left turn and the last km is an uphill kick, nothing to hard, but just enough to find some out. Beautifully unnecessary end to the day.
It's beginning to look like it

Here's a link you might like
(I found it looking for stuff on the Davide Farnelli Chrono). Last week Tarcisio Persegono celebrated his 300th ascent of the Gavia in a little press event where he was accompanied by Gibo Simoni and Imerio Massignan who led the way when the Giro came that way in 1960. Persegno said “Last year I did it 42 times, but I’ve promised my wife I’ll only do it 10 or 15 times next year.”
So awesome
Massignan led over the Gavia? That has to be a first.

But he did not want to sit in the same bus as Cav – preferably one a little ahead of the last one. LOL – mind games….
