Gilbert's crash may have lost him the leader's jersey yesterday

(not that the chances of keeping it without the crash were so great)

… but all in all Lotto were relieved at the end of the day. Gilbert’s first words upon reaching the team car after the crash were “Copain, I think I broke something”. So to find out that that was just shock talking was a huge relief.

The crash itself was Petacchi’s fault, apparently. The Italian had just put new wheels into his bike, and his break pads didn’t work on them. The only way to stop was to drive straight into Gilbert. Ale-Jet apologised profusely, Gilbert said it wasn’t fault he had a mechanical, they’re all still friends.

I bet I could think of a way to stop that didn't involve running straight into someone else

and I don’t even cycle for a living.

very fast start

The average is 51 kilometers per hour. The speed is very high. The back has split in three groups, although it seems they are coming to one compact pack again.

They've got 2 minutes on the peloton, so it looks like the right one.

RAMIREZ ABEJA Javier (028) has realised that Mouncoutié is there and he isn’t so he’s chasing on his own. Stuck in no man’s land though, a minute away from the break.

He was stone last leaving the start, behind all the team cars, almost like he’d left something on the bus and went back for it!

Boiling hot at the start this morning

Normal scenes of chaos but you get up amongst the teams like at a small race., rather than a GT. Lots of the cyclists posing for pictures. Took Carlos about ten miinutes to get away from his bus due to interviews and fan requests. Garmin team super friendly with the fans, Tyler very chatty, seems a tort nice bloke Today’s highlight, cav signing a picture of one of his tdf wins.

Kash-ls-King had some bike problems yesterday

Andreï Kashechkin broke his bike with 7km to go to the top of Xorret de Cati yesterday. "It was the worse moment because we just approached the steepest part of the climb", the Kazakh from Lampre said. "The bike I was given was at the size of Grega Bole, so too small for me and I couldn’t sit on the saddle at all until the end. I lost two and half minutes but I’m not worried. The Vuelta is still and there will be bigger differences created in longer climbs. I’m feeling good".

Of course, it's a big deal, but you're putting yourself under huge pressure.

From the ticker today:

Katusha’s directeur sportif Dimitri Konyshev admitted he doesn’t agree with his team captain. "Purito absolutely want the jersey but I absolutely prefer him not to take it today", said the Russian.

by afx237vi on Sep 5, 2010 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

How so?

Sure, one team is Spanish, but the overall objectives for J-Rod and Anton are the same.

by afx237vi on Sep 5, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Anton doesn't have that many huge results at this point

I doubt he would give up a jersey for a possible long term tactical gain.

by Jens on Sep 5, 2010 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Hmm, maybe, but I think that's a little unambitious.

Anton is talented enough to win the overall, and his team should be doing everything in their power to make that easier for him.

OK, they didn’t plan to get the jersey yesterday, and he kinda got it by accident, but if I were the Euskaltel DS I would now be trying my best to get rid of it. Think big!

by afx237vi on Sep 5, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

by Jens on Sep 5, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Nope

Just recognising that it’s harder to win a GC if you have to defend a jersey for two weeks instead of one. And it’s not necessarily the racing that is harder, but everything that comes with it…. interviews, podiums etc.

Race going so slow have made it to alcoy with enough time to be sat in a bar watching the last 35k on tv. Lovely downhill run into alcoy, then over the bridge, then on to a sharp left turn and the last km is an uphill kick, nothing to hard, but just enough to find some out. Beautifully unnecessary end to the day.

(I found it looking for stuff on the Davide Farnelli Chrono). Last week Tarcisio Persegono celebrated his 300th ascent of the Gavia in a little press event where he was accompanied by Gibo Simoni and Imerio Massignan who led the way when the Giro came that way in 1960. Persegno said “Last year I did it 42 times, but I’ve promised my wife I’ll only do it 10 or 15 times next year.”
