Lasagne, salad, and a nice cup o’ tea
Gora Euskaltel! Sorte on azenarioak!
Any reason for either besides likely exhaustion?

Stuey and mountains... he's had a big season...and I think he's ready for a rest before the Worlds...
But of course I’m ridiculously biased :)

So is anything the matter with them or have they decided that Frank is beyond help...?
Gora Euskaltel! Sorte on azenarioak!
I think Andy is beyond helping Frank at this point

Family troubles brewing perhaps.
At least Andy managed to provide his teammates with bottles of water on the last stage.
Riis send them home because they have broken the teams internal rules
He will explain after todays stage.

Finally the cracks are stating to show.
Luckily for Riis, he did manage to keep the hole thing together during the TdF.
is it inappropriate to speculate... that they were drinking?
Completely unfounded of course…
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
It's probably something like that...doubt it's anything sinister
Gora Euskaltel! Sorte on azenarioak!
Andy says
“I acknowledge that I have broken a rule on the team by going out for a drink after dinner and for that reason Bjarne has decided to send myself and Stuart O’Grady home.”
“I’m responsible for my actions and even though I think it is too harsh a decision, I respect that Bjarne is the boss and he needs to do what he thinks is the best.”
“I was getting back into shape and I would really have liked to stay at the Vuelta and help Frank and the rest of Team Saxobank.”

So Seahorse was right--it was for drinking.
Too bad he’s not on Liqui…where’s that pic of the whole team sitting around with beers?
The Muur is my bitch--Albertina
Exactly... not at all surprised... but if it is the only reason Riis is being petty

Cyclingfans twitter
Shared hotel w/France A/B teams at l’Avenir over the weekend; I think they boot riders if they DON’T have after dinner drink
Rules are rules though
Riis may be being petty, but I bet Andy would have been pissed if his teammates were out at the pub during his efforts to win the TdF. I’d be enraged if I was Frank. If he seriously wants to win this thing, he will need all the help he can get.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
Even if they broke the rules, and if it's enough to warrant exclusion.
This is not the way to handle this. An immediate press release to explain why they’re being booted is the least they can do. Now they just let it hang, which immediately makes people jump to “doping!” conclusions. I bet he wouldn’t have done it this way if they were both staying with him.
I must admit that doping didn't occur to me for a second... naive I know,
but I realise I appear to be one of the few. So yes, I definitely want Riis to say what’s happening..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I agree, it's a terrible way for Riis to handle the situation
But, the only person that was really wronged here is Frank. His bro and friend were obviously not taking their brother’s quest for red serious enough to follow team rules.
Personally, i think it’s ridiculous to kick someone out for having a drink, but rules are rules for the team.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
heh, Riis boot someone for doping?
I mean, Frank got away with his “diet sheets” and “exercise plans”, no? (and even for his total stupidity of paying for stuff out of his own ank account!)
by Sarah Connolly on Sep 7, 2010 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions
I have no qualms speculating
that this is a move perpetrated by Riis as a sort of dressing down for two riders leaving his team. But, rules are rules…yes they are, and if Andy was in the lead it wouldn’t have happened. Riis didn’t handle Sastre’s departure well at all, and i expect him to handle Andy’s departure pretty badly of course. I’m probably gonna be told I’m off base with these remarks, but I believe the decision was fueled by personal feelings, and that’s not a stretch at all.

Not only one drink, they got drunk.
I don’t think it is very professionnally to go out and get drunk when you are in the middel of a GT, but then I don’t ride a bike, and know nothing about what it is to be a professional bike rider, but I do know that at my work they do not like it if people turn up with a hangover after a night in the city and they have serius work to do.

so far this am, did the 1st half of the remaining berries. later today, batch up the ribs to go into the freezer, finishing cleaning the berries, and while that is going on, cooking the salmon fillets for the rest of the week.

O/T Sports stars and scandals goes hand in hand
Other than doping cycling seems pretty tame compared to other sports when it comes to scandals. We have a bit of coke here and there and perhaps the odd drink, but football (read soccer) level scandals are very rare. With more money flowing into the top cyclists bank accounts, we could see more god like behaviour in the future. Just an observation. No finger pointing.
Yes, agree.
Plus, the bicyclists never get it quite right – Boonen gets caught for speeding at 200km/hr and it’s a little station wagon, not a Ferrari, Cav slapping Thor with a white glove behind the scenes at the 2009 Tour – there’s always element of pathos, comedy usually with the bike scandals. Bjarne kicked them off because they wouldn’t drink with him?
Andy half-assed the Vuelta last year, too – okay his team situation in 2010, yes, but now 2 years in a row – he is very strong-willed about his career, and seems he feels entitled to ride the autobus when he likes, but okay yes maybe the team situation is disintegrating, somehow.
Grab a few beers on an off day of a GT, next day sweat it out in the autobus. The life!

I read an article not too long ago
About Keukeleire, it said that he was allowed to ride. Apparently the rule only applies to ProTour teams.

Combination of out of shape and the course not being as sprinty as thought at first, I imagine.
He was going to ride L’Avenir as prep, he even got special permission from Cofidis to do so, but he’s not there because the race was too mountainous.

Riis was at the bar :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
"we just had two beers and as we were walking home
at 1 am we met Riis who was sitting at another bar"
If they were at a bar, they deserve to be sent home.
Their teammates must be dissapointed and feel shortchanged
Dat was echt een schwalbe!
Perhaps... but honestly it was the hotel bar. A and S were slinking past probably...
It feels like Riis having a fit of pique to me, but perhaps there’s more to it.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Cultural differences, maybe?
Some Norwegian football players (soccer) did the same thing a few years ago and were sent straight home. Rules are rules.

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Drongo's here too... if they're repeat offenders maybe...
I don’t think they made a good decision, but I think Riis’s response is a tad overwrought. I also don’t always think ‘rules are rules’ and that’s possibly a cultural difference. Even that old Norwegian Lefty Holdenmate wants to hang wrongdoers from the rafters ;)

Yesterday on the TV news (in USA)
There was a story about a young Australian kid who got mauled by a seal at the zoo. Blamed himself for letting the seal sneeze and spray him with fish guts. HTFU.
agreed. everyone is bemoaning poor Stuey and Andy, when their teammates are the ones that got screwed
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
I don't feel sorry for them at all... but I think it's a bit pathetic..
I think the Schlecks are both being punished… Cance was likely to have left soon anyway.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Amen. They broke the rules and should deal with it.
But it sounds as though Riis is being a petulant child about the Schlecks leaving. This all smells of petty revenge to me. Which teammate is getting punished here? Oh, look, another Schleck.
My thoughts exactly...
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
It all "sounds" and "smells" huh?
An alternative narrative would be that Stuey and Andy, in an obvious display of selfishness, disregarded team rules. Thus giving Riis no other chance than to send them home. Rules that are not enforced will be broken again and again. If their team mates feel wronged then I think they should point the finger at ASSOG, and not at Riis. This is how it “sounds” and “smells” to me. :) Subjectivity, such a wonderful thing.
When did I ever claim to be giving anything other than my own opinion?
And come on, like it’s first time riders had a beer after the stage. Taking them both out the Vuelta is completely out of proportion, especially if you’re trying to win the race with another rider.
Welcome to Northern Europe.
Here drinking = Excess. Therefore we tend to have strict rules about drinking. I suspect that Liquigas, for example, has more lenient rules when it comes to drinking. Mr K’s openness about it clearly indicates that. I think it’s just a bit strange to come up with these alterior motives theories when it is pretty clear that rules have been broken. This “Riis is the big bad wolf theory” is not doing it for me. Sometimes the riders are the ones to blame. Management get more than their fair share of blame I think.
That might be the Swedish and Norwegian way of thinking
Not so sure about Denmark. Or Finland.

I don't think there are ulterior motives...or I hope there aren't.
You know, I’m disappointed that things are going to end at Saxo this way, and I think that Riis could have found a better way to ‘punish’ them.

Oh, but
it IS unfair on the other riders, and on Frank
It’s like the footballers here, whining about not being able to have a beer in the World Cup. If I was paid as much as they are, giving up beer for 3 weeks is not a big difficulty. it’s not like I’m saying they should never drink, but if they don’t like the rules of the game (don’t stay out drinking til 1am on a worknight) they don’t HAVE to be pro-sportsmen

"Subjectivity, such a wonderful thing."
If we were talking about Garmin the detractors would claim we were all drowning in Kool-aid. ;-)
Yup, a wonderful thing.
I mean, Andy and Stuey could go on to break Saxo rules for years if not stopped now! Oh, wait…
My subjective take: Riis had a choice—enforcement of team rules it totally up to him. Either there’s a lot more we don’t know, or he’s being a dick.
The Muur is my bitch--Albertina
Riis was always a dick.
It was never a secret, Andy and Stuey finally cracked under the pressure and were telling Riis to STFU. Why are people surprised?
would this situation happen if those two weren't already gone
It reminds me of the bad blood between sastre and Riis in the 08 vuelta, there is a pattern by Riis; he loves his riders when he can use them, then once they announce they’re gone, he goes out of his way to kick them on the way out. I hate his behavior at the moment, you just can not tell me this doesn’t at least occasionally happen without the same reprecussions.

"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
If you play a game, break the rules, get caught, you should be penalized.
People watching the game should know better than to blame the ref.
Thank you for clarifying that issue for me.
I have always wondered…
you'd have to know if he's ever closed one eye
or both, before, when people grabbed a beer (assuming they ever did). Could be he’s being an enormous jerk, by coming down hard on them, while having winked at the same behavior in the past.
Not necessarily, though—some teams (even some amateur teams) take the “no drinking / no late nights during competition” very seriously.
Ah, it must be a cultural difference then
We always blame the ref ;)

I am with you in beeing sad about the end, but I am not putting the blame for that on only one person, in my experience it takes both parties to make it a good or bad end.

.
Thankyou!
(could be so much worse – I’m playing Tour Champion Vuelta game & my team is floundering)

Ben King posted a video from the team car of Taylor's ITT 2 days ago
and his DS in the car was talking about how Taylor needs to use his brakes more. It was clear that he meant Taylor takes turns too fast.
He also wins Prologues by 1 sec...

Moncoutie in white allround jersey
Worn by Gilbert.
Gilbert should find a way to wear to the KOM jersey
So he can wear all four this year.
