Belgian Worlds Team Announced
Derniere Heure has the details: Gilbert and four Omega Pharma teammates, plus a few more big names.
- Philippe Gilbert
- Mario Aerts
- Jan Bakelants
- Jurgen Roelandts
- Greg Van Avermaet
- Frederik Willems (LIQ)
- Stijn Devolder (QST) (RR and TT)
- Kevin de Weert (QST)
- Bjorn Leukemans (VAC)
- Dominique Cornu (TT only)
Seems clear this is Phil's team first and foremost, with Van Avermaet, Devolder and Leukemans not guys you want to overlook.

Vanendert from Lotto is a little surprising not to be there...seems like he would be a good domestique and seemed in good form
so far at the Vuelta. I wonder if Devolder could do something similar to De Ronde with Gilbert…would make things entertaining to say the least
Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!, Tommeke!
I think Vanendert is per request of Philippe Gilbert (Bakelandts too).
He’s a hard worker, he’ll do his job keeping the pace high.
strong team
have a feeling this will be an entertaining world champs. if only it wasn’t in usch an inconvenien time zone

Nice team
Gilbert in my mind is the #1 favorite and Devo is the really weird wildcard who could win too. The rest are strong supporters.
Plus they too are pointing away from a big bunch sprint.
Hmm
The Testosterone Tootsie is a very good rider. I can definitely imagine him factoring in the top 20 or even top 10. I honestly can’t see him winning though. Not like Devo could. I am basing this assumption on history which could be all wrong. Hell if the race shakes out right, Roelandts and GVA could be factors too, though, again, not for the win.
Nah, but guys like Greg VA and Leukemans are too good for the other countries to just let go.
And they’re not incapable at a parcours like this. Good cards to play.
Best team in the field
Even without the Bolivian farmer’s best balding customer in the lineup. That is, best if a little late break of about five stays off the front like I’m thinking, ala Evans last year. Or, more comparably, Bettini in Stuttgart.
I count 4 or 5 guys who can get in those late breaks and possibly win: PhilGil, Leukemans, GVA, Roelandts and maybe Devolder. Is there any other team with more than two guys with the punch to win in a late break like that? Even Italy and Spain look iffy for this course this year.
GvA used to be, before he got the scares. And he seems to be getting over them.
And Roelandts is the former Belgian champ (yes, I know how he won it). But that year was his best year to date. Seems like for both, a lot of it is in their heads.
Ha no, not the newspaper.
Greg crashed pretty badly in a sprint – I think it was in Driedaagse but I don’t remember clearly – and he says that scared him. He was afraid to get into sprints, afraid to jostle for position, afraid to take any risks. That coupled with the huge expectations after winning a points jersey got him down for a while, but he seems to be getting better lately. Imho.
This is not Flanders . . .
. . . it’ll be much faster, and that is why I don’t think Devolder is likely.
He’ll make a great decoy though.
