Pop Go Many People. Anton into three jerseys
Nibali: pop Jrod: POP Menchov: BOOOOOM. This basically sums up the stage for you except for Mosquera's big attack and a few other minor things, so below join me for some more speculation disguised as analysis.
First, does anyone here understand why Rabo put in all that work for nothing, personally I would think that Menchov might start feeling the knee before the official start of the climb. Second, ANTON IS THE MAN TO BEAT at this point at least and if not it's only because he spent too much energy. Anyway on the subject of the Menchov explosion, he finished in 55th 5:05 down on Anton and even more pathetic Gustav Larsson finished 2:06 ahead of Menchov. Third, Tondo looked really good, although I hope he doesn't do a Giro again. While I'm on the subject of solid performances why not talk about Tommy D who last year puked on Sierra Nevada (correct me if I'm wrong), but this year is hanging in eleventh twelfth place. Lastly, give it up for Marzio Bruseign, he was hanging around at xorret del cati and got fourth today and I predict it will be another top ten grand tour finish for him.
If there's anything to add I'll add, if there's anything to subtract I'll do that

The slow washing away of the Tour GC guys
That’s what I am looking at here. 2 1/2 Tour guys left in the top 10 (Frank is 1/2 with J-Rod, and Roche). 2 more left in the next ten (Lulu and Sastre).
Anton's certainly looking good...
But in the end the gaps were not huge (something like 15 guys within a minute of him).
And you have to think Nibali and J-Rod would have been closer had they ridden at their own pace (as Anton did) rather than trying to hold Mosquera’s wheel.
As for Rabobank… maybe the idea was to set the pace so that no one else would set a faster one?
Cazzo, it's going to be a bloodbath! The Mortirolo is a horror, absolutely interminable. -- Michele Scarponi
Makes sense.
There wil be harder stages than this one, thus the relatively small time gaps. Perhaps Rabo was hoping that the fields would take it like the Andorra stage in last year’s Tour where not much happened other than Contador attacking late. But I guess the stage was just a little bit harder and Zeke attacked sooner and so destroyed Rabo’s strategy.
Rabo's strategy was for Menchov to not suck. He didn't follow the strategy, however.
And finally my man Mosquera is showing why I took him on my VDS team: to win the Vuelta. I know he can do it. Show it to the world, Zeke.

Maybe they should have consulted with Menchov first

Last years Tour was raced slow for Lance remember
OK may not be true but it definitely was raced far more conservatively. Nice to see how much action a climb like Andorra can give if it is raced properly.

This Vuelta is killing me.

Are Cervelo hoping to pull a CSC 2008?
Get Tondo into podium position/leaders jersey, then launch Sastre on a final climb and let everyone watch Tondo while Sastre powers away ftw. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but they are certainly talking like it
Tondo insisted that despite having an advantage of 1:29 over Sastre, he remains a domestique at the service of the 2008 Tour de France winner who attracted him to Cervélo at the end of last year.
Or Tondo is just a humble guy

First Carlos has to show he can power away on a final climb...
….and I gotta say I’m skeptical. This feels more like sandbagging than anything else.
How's Anton's time trialling?
His history looks mediocre to bad, so let’s not crown him champion just yet. That 46km ITT… that’s a huge block of time available if Vinny can ride a better race from here on out.

Agree
Igor needs more time on Vinny still. And that’s why I like Bruse too if he can climb like today.
Looking at the top 10 overall
It looks like Vinnie can beat all of these guys in a TT. If he can hang in there, his chances look good to me.
What happened to Kreuziger? I expected him to be up there with Nibali.
Fabian Cancellara walks into a bar. "I'd like Tom Boonen on the rocks...make it a double."
Vinnie's not good at long TTs though.
Sort of like Valverde — very good up to about 25 km and mediocre over 40 km, especially on flats. If Anton just has great form this year, Nibali isn’t going get back the kind of time we’re thinking.
The only guys I see who have ever done anything in a long TT are the Bruse, the ex-Mullet and…(why not go there?)….Tommy D. Plaza is a better than Vinnie too. But he should beat the rest of the top-15.

Looking at this year's TdF....
Maybe we should put less stock into past performance as an indicator of final week time trial performance for any rider in contention. Andy proved in this year’s TdF that a chance to win is motivation enough to put up an outlier result.
"Thanks again, Floyd Landis, Yellow Jersey Wearer: Nuisance Category"
That's what I was trying to say about Anton.
It’s his year and I think he’ll stay close to Nibali in the TT.
Andy to me is a yes and no. He did great but he barely finished in the top-50 in that TDF TT, over 6 minutes behind Spartacus. And 2 1/2 behind Menchov, who rode in the same wind. The real story to me was that Contador was nothing special that day. Even AC has never really crushed a TT over 40 km, great as he is.
Seems that the guys who smash the field on the long TTs tend to be the usual suspects. If Bruse stays around dropping just 16 seconds on every mountain top, look out.

Menchov was the stud of that day
I’m so pleased with Marzio so far, hope he keeps it up and we see him turn out to be the stud of this ITT.

Yeah Andy wasn't as impressive as it seemed IMO
AC was a bit worse than thought and with that wind everyone just kinda did meh outside of Mench. But Andy has been getting better and better as a racer throughout the years while Anton progressed a ton this year but has never been a contender. How will he handle it we will see. Also remember that Anton is a pretty bad TTist even compared to Andy.

I don't think Andy's performance was based on a "chance to win"
He and his brother spent some time and proper preparation on their TT machines.

As I said before . . .
. . . I hope Sastre helps Tondo for a podium position.
It would be the classy thing to do, as well as thank him for his hard work for this last year.
