So you want to work the caravan?
Here's a video shot by Cyclingnews.com photographer Jon Devich at the Tour of California this summer. An inside look at the ins and outs of working a photo moto. It's about 7 minutes long. It is that close.

become very good at what we do ....
and find a publication to hire you. Failing that you will need to find a way to unseat Jon, or Casey Gibson (velonews), or one of the many other photogs working the pro peloton right now… Or you can become a really competent bike handler and get cleared by the USAC moto refs to work the race.

ideally really competent is just that...
reality? One guy at Utah was asked not to volunteer next year. One photog, was removed after stage 3 I think. A poor driver is scary. A clueless photographer just pisses everyone in the race off. I’ve seen both and worked with one driver who got yelled at by refs and riders. If the refs are yelling, it’s one thing, not so good. If it’s the riders, it’s another, not good at all.
