Versus announces LIVE HD coverage of the Tour of California

This is good news. Live coverage is better than delayed coverage, and HD on my television is better than low def streaming crap. They also announced that Versus has signed a "multi-year agreement". Now I am not a lawyer, so keep that in mind, but my expectation is that such an agreement constitutes a rock solid guarantee that Lance will come back from retirement each year and ride the ToC naked, on fire, while juggling flaming chain saws. Pause and consider how cool that would look in HD...

would they at least get brian and anthony to do the commentary? and, no commercials would be nice.

I'm happy about this.

Cool! I wish Universal would broadcast in HD.

I love it that they’re on TV at all, but the broadcasts are terrible quality—like internet feeds blown up too much.

It definitely got played into the ground. Even I was flinching after a while--Tyler Farrar, on that Transitions ad.

Don't have the bandwidth

Their broadcast operation operates in a sliver of spectrum (which is what makes their broadcast possible). I suppose they could do something different for cable, but they’d probably have to renegotiate most of their carriage agreements (with the cable systems). Hey, maybe this Comcast thing could result in some good after all.*

No coverage of Flanders

I checked out vs. schedule for cycling this year. No Flanders. They had it last year. Also after the tour they pretty much quit. They used to show the vuelta. I would like to see them cover the Giro and more of the end of season races. On a side note, world cycling is not releasing the 2010 giro on DVD. One of the best giros in years and they are not putting it out. Does anyone know whats up with this?

by cycling_fan on Jan 20, 2011 9:13 AM EST reply actions

Universal picked up the Vuelta--they couldn't both have it.

Universal also snagged the Giro, and has it and the Vuelta again for 2011.

Don’t know about Flanders or the DVD thing.

It definitely got played into the ground. Even I was flinching after a while--Tyler Farrar, on that Transitions ad.

versus(oln) hasn't shown the vuelta since 2004, pretty much stopped with the giro in 2005

regarding the 2010 giro and wcp, rcs asking price was too high for the italian bundle (giro, msr, gdl)

So Universal Sports can afford it but Versus can't?

Doesn’t sound right.

Well, Armstrong rode Flanders last year....

I don’t get Versus, so I am happy for all the races that fall to Universal Sports

HD no big deal

Except for sports . Eurosport does races in both regular and HD and HD is very nice for the details

As someone who remembers the TBGL,

(the Time Before Greg Lemond)

having the Vuelta and Giro coming over the free airwaves in the SF Bay Area is just super wonderful.

But probably they won’t let the Schlangman out of the bunker even for this and the announcing will not be as good as the 2 GTs. it’s just too much to ask.

Plus, won’t this conflict with the Giro Coverage? Awesome – they will be doing 5/6 hours of live cycling coverage daily for a week!

oh boy!

Does this mean we’ll get live HD coverage of crashdan and Jimbo running alongside the peloton hand-in-hand in nothing but their thongs?
